Our family has loved Northern Michigan for many years. It is where my Irish parents taught us to be part of the outdoors. We learned to water ski here as well as, snow ski. Family and friends in an upnorth setting means laughter, good food, fresh air and lotsa stars.
Maureen Gallagher purchased this cottage in 2013
The private lake setting, the white birches and the short distance drive to the big Lake Michigan. The quaint 1920's cottage reminds us of where we came from and to enjoy the simple things in life like sunrises, listening to the sound of rain on the back porch, hearing laughter of the lake while sitting around a fire. There are so many things to do in the area or just sit back in the adirondack chair and enjoy the veiw.
Private beach setting, availability of Glen's Market, beautiful restaurants, or simple dining, a beachy town, cute cinema, water parks, golf, tennis. Brownwood Acres at Torch Lake let's you step back in history, from penny candies to flea market to the history of the area.
Thanks so much for a perfect place for our families to vacation! The cottage was so clean and spacious with plenty of space for all of us to sleep comfortably. The screened in porch was perfect for our family dinners and a cup of coffee in the morning. The kitchen and rooms had everything we needed-thanks for all that you provided to make our vacation special. The kids had a great time on the clear lake-I loved the view we got from every window. There is also a lot of privacy with beautiful trees all around. The town of Bellaire was a surprise with great shopping, dining and brew pub. Thanks to Maureen who thought of everything to make the accomodations perfect for our families.
My family and 2 friends' families stayed here in August. The best parts of the home are accurately depicted in the photos. What is not pictured is the problem. The bathrooms, the "interesting" electricity and the poorly maintained dock, to mention a few. But, the thing that completely ruined the vacation for us was the bat that awoke my friend and her husband halfway through the trip, at 2 am, while they were sleeping in the upstairs bedroom. Needless to say, we contacted the owner as soon as possible the following morning as we no longer felt comfortable staying, especially considering the young children we were with (ages 1-7). She had been very helpful up to this point and was reluctantly willing to refund us part of our unused rental amount. What has happened since is the really horrible part. She has now seen fit to retain the entire deposit amount, claiming that was included in the refund when she is more than aware that is was not. When you rent out your home, you take a certain responsibility about the well being of the renters. She did not, in the end. It was her opinion that this was just part of "up North living" and that is was most likely due to our negligence of keeping doors open or windows open without screens. We are not ignorant and again were with small children so neither of those scenarios occurred. So rent at your own risk.
To get into more detail regarding the home. The positives are that ample sized living room and master bedroom. The upstairs "kids" room was also cute with games and toys. The largest problems, and the reason we wouldn't have returned even had the bat incident not occurred is that bathrooms. There are 2 1/2 bathrooms yes, but set up in the worst way. The upstairs bath just has a tub-- no shower, no handheld sprayer and is really no even big enough for an adult to stand in, or even an older child. Additionally after the first bath upstairs, a VERY loud rumbling sound occurs. I believe it is the pump, pumping the water up the pipes but it scared most of us the first time it occurred, not to mention the traumatized children! The additional 1 1/2 baths are arranged in tandem that connect the master bedroom and mudroom, which is just crazy. The are no hooks or racks to hang any towels anywhere. There is no wifi or internet anywhere in the home. The dock is not safe. Really, the home has potential but is in need of serious renovations before it is in rental condition.
Our stay was perfect! The accommodations offered everything we were looking for, a beautifully maintained home, amazing view and so many water activities. The kitchen has everything needed for a stay away from home. Intermediate lake is gorgeous and not crowded leaving plenty of space for boating.
We will definitely be rebooking at this location.
My family along with 2 other families stayed at this cabin over the winter break. Very nice accommodations. Wonderful atmosphere and all amenities were included. Recommend this place to anyone coming to stay to get away for a long weekend with a large family or a couple of small families. Close to Bellaire, Shanty Creek, etc. Thank you to Maureen for working with us on this vacation!
This place was very well maintained and accommodated our large family gathering nicely. We loved the large screened in porch, and with young kids, it was nice to be a bit removed from the lake.
We enjoyed a lovely week at Ballinagh! We found this charming century old cottage to be beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, and much more spacious than we had expected from the photos. There were ten of us in our party, but we found the house to be comfortable and spacious with lots of places to hang out. We enjoyed sitting down by the beach, eating together in the screened-in porch or hanging out and playing games in the comfy living room. We used the house as a base to explore the area, visiting Charlevoix and Sleeping Bear Dunes. It was delightful. Maureen did everything she could to make our stay all we hoped it would be. I would highly recommend Ballinagh cottage.
