A nice home in a spectacular location
If you want lots of neighbors, cars zooming by, and the crowds of South Beach, don't rent this house. But if you want a retreat that is tucked away, yet close to the best beach on the Vineyard, this is a very good choice. Though a few repairs are needed, the house is comfortable, functional and in a truly beautiful location.
Outdoors: Land Bank trails are great for a morning walk or get-away when the kids are driving you crazy. The owners have cleared extra trails on their property and added a "labrynth". Fun for kids to explore, while staying close to the house. Plenty of lawn for kids to run and play safely. Large deck needs some repairs. Hot tub was out of order. A few deck chairs, but no patio set. Outdoor shower with plenty of hot water.
Indoors: A nice balance of open spaces where family can gather and comfortable spots for retreating. Lots of windows mean spectacular breezes. Main room big enough so while wife and I were having breakfast, one kid was reading on the couch, another was doing cartwheels, and the other was building w/blocks. Big sturdy kitchen table. A good house for rainy day activities with young kids. Besides dining chairs, enough comfy seating for 4-5. Lower level has carpeted open area for the kids, though seating is only mattresses configured into a sort of "daybed". Besides needing to lower hot water temperature, no safety issues for our kids. Stove, oven, fridge, microwave, washer and dryer all work fine. Fridge has a bit of rust on exterior. Duct tape on the faucet. Linens included, though some were a bit small and older.
Overall condition: Clean, with no "yuck" items or smells. A bit of mold in the shower, some crumbs in drawers, a couple of light bulbs out. The owners are just learning how to rent their home out and are extremely responsive. Some windows and a door need repair, a couple mattresses need replacing, and the lower level carpeting is probably past its lifespan. It's a big jump going from family vacation house to rental. Things you never thought about, or prioritized, like a tear in a carpet, get scrutinized by your renters.
Like all rentals, this house had a few "we wish it had" items. You can find newer homes that might not have duct tape on the kitchen faucet. You just won't get the Land Bank in your back yard, the big inside and outside spaces for kids to play, or Lucy Vincent as close. We had a great two weeks in Chilmark and enjoyed this house. We would rent again after checking on status of repairs.
