About janet nelson

My name is Janet and I live next door to Tee Son. I manage the property for the owner, Mr. Burke, while he is away. After retiring from work, Mr Burke purchased the house in 1999 to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. He has put a lot of care and detail into this home and hopes that others can enjoy the serene, relaxing atomosphere that it has to offer.

Big country house to relax in

  • 4 of 5

We just spent a lovely Thanksgiving at Tee Son with 6 adults (3 couples) and a dog. We had no problem cooking Thanksgiving dinner in the big, well-equipped kitchen, and there was plenty of space to spread out for eating and relaxing. The weather was unseasonably nice, so we ate on the huge wrap-around porch.

The deer shown in the photos are real, and they're everywhere! Very cool; we saw deer everywhere when we went walking. And yet we were still less than 10 minutes from Fort Bragg, with useful grocery stores and such.

It's not a luxury resort, so don't expect fancy modern touches (the bathrooms are particularly outdated), but it's cozy and full of wonderful eclectic asian decor, and I'd happily stay here again.

Base Camp for Bucket List

  • 5 of 5

I planned a bucket list excursion to the redwoods for my elderly parents, and Tee Son Hideaway served as a near-perfect base camp. I say "near perfect" because the kitchen, like many VRBO properties, lacks sharp knives and a good griddle. But that's not enough to offset the 5-star rating.

The property is set just barely off the beaten path (if one considers Fort Bragg to be near it), but it's so peaceful there. The group delighted in the roomy space, the beautiful yard--especially the redwood trees, and the bucolic setting, with deer cruising up next to the house in the morning to check us out.

The house is just a short drive from many small redwood parks, and only about 2 hours away from Avenue of the Giants, via an incredible twisty mountain road up to Leggett. The coast views up US-1 between Fort Bragg and Leggett are stellar, and we saw an enormous pod of dolphins playing off the coast, which added to the wonder of it all.

In all, we visited Muir Woods, Jug Handle State Park, Glass Beach, Avenue of the Giants, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and Lady Bird Johnson Grove, as well as many little side stops along US-1 and US-101. We ate in every night except one, and had excellent sushi that night at Off the Hook in downtown Fort Bragg. Although it doesn't Yelp well, the food was solid, and we'd go back if we were in the area again.

The huckleberry bushes on the property were overloaded during our visit, and we picked and made huckleberry pancakes (hence the earlier griddle comment) with huckleberry syrup, as well as huckleberry sauces for ice cream. Thanks to owner Janet for suggesting we raid the bushes (she was super-helpful in general).

The last couple of nights of our trip were spent in Eureka, mainly to cut down on driving up the coast every day. Housing option was considerably less amazing.

Next time, less big trees, and more Tee Son. What a great place to make memories!

Owner's Response: Hello Ken, Thank you for your nice review of Tee Son Hideaway. I'm looking for an easy to clean, electric griddle but for now I have responded to your review by supplying the kitchen with a stainless stove top griddle. Keeping kitchen knives sharp at all times is quite a challenge that is why I equipped Tee Son with a small, palm sized, knife sharpener in the top kitchen drawer for guests to sharpen knives as needed. Hopefully these will adequately serve you should you return to Tee Son. Best Wishes, Janet

Cozy, quiet getaway

  • 5 of 5

Such a peaceful place for a long weekend getaway! We saw deers, turkeys wondering around the meadow, with the quacking of the frogs in the pond. My 6 yrs old daughter loved loved the pond. She was so excited to spot couple of salamanders in the pond and wished she could take one home. ;-)The house is clean and cozy with unique decors. The kitchen is fully equipped...everything is just perfect!

We did kayak at Mendocino big river, which is about 20 min drive from the cabin and spent the whole afternoon at the beach next to Mendocino downtown. So relaxing... We also stopped at Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden the last day on our way home, which is about 10 min drive from Cabin. We loved the garden too! We were already planning a longer stay next time. I'm so glad I found this wonderful place.

Ft Bragg vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was even nice than the photos showed -- The kitchen was stocked with basic amenities, the rooms were spacious, and the deck felt very private. Our toddler had a wonderful time exploring the yard around the house. It was a short drive into town, and there were nice walking paths along the nearby beach. All in all, it was a very peaceful place to stay.

DFE & Family

  • 4 of 5

It’s an idyllic, tranquil place. The house is located at the end of a long road, totally invisible from the road yet close enough to access the main road for modern convenience. It’s truly “Away From It All”!

The house was spotlessly cleaned upon our arrival. Interior is filled with lovely and charming décor. Kitchen was equipped with basic utensils, although it would be nice to have enough dishes (especially plates) for a party of six. Bathrooms are somewhat dated with noisy fan. Extra and firm pillows would be a great help. Overall, it’s a very nice stay for the weekend. During our stay, we had a chance to visit the Mendocino Botanical Gardens, Avenue of the Giants, and had a wonderful dinner at the harbor restaurant on the last night of our stay. The sunset was beautiful!!
