CONTEMPORARY WINE COUNTRY RETREAT

Glen Ellen Estate Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps 7 (plus 1) In A Main House And Guest House With Two Master Bedrooms

Amazing views, fresh modern interiors, peaceful natural surroundings and a huge deck with swimming pool and hot tub define this Sonoma wine country retreat near Glen Ellen. It is an extraordinarily uplifting property at any time of year, only 15-20 minutes' drive from the wineries, restaurants and farmers' markets of historic Sonoma and Glen Ellen.

Cavedale Ridge is a 10-acre hillside estate facing west, with spectacular views across the vineyards and orchards of the Valley of the Moon to the Sonoma Mountain range, Mount Tamalpais and, in the far distance, the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge. The house is surrounded by olive and bay trees and fragrant Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and manzanita. In spring, there are blossoming crab apple trees.

A unique and outstanding feature of Cavedale Ridge is a vast deck running off the Main House living area for swimming, lounging, outdoor cooking and dining, and star gazing.

To reach Cavedale Ridge, it is a 10-minute drive from the main highway up a windy and narrow road (so we discourage nervous drivers). For everyone seeking a quiet and comfortable escape near Sonoma and San Francisco, this is a very special wine country retreat.

ACCOMMODATION

The Main House and Guest House (always rented together) are distinguished by pristine, light-filled interiors with white walls, contemporary furniture and vibrant accent colors. There are three master suites, with two enjoying panoramic views of the Valley, and the third a garden view.

Main House

Walk through the front door, and you enter an airy open plan space with hallway, living room, dining area for 10, and large kitchen. The bright comfortable interior has vast picture windows with magnificent views, making it a special place to relax in any season. A custom kitchen is designed for the gourmet cook. It has a large island with gas cooktop, extensive work surfaces and a breakfast bar. There are Bosch appliances throughout, and thoughtful extras such as a Kitchen Aid and gelato maker.

Two sets of sliding folding glass doors open from the dining area onto the newly-built extensive deck, creating a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors: a huge indoor/outdoor living space with swimming pool (heated in high season) hot tub (available all year), sun loungers, fire pit, and propane BBQ with food preparation surfaces. This is where lazy summer days are spent, lounging on the deck, cooking local produce together, watching breath-taking sunsets, and sitting around the firepit after dark, gazing at the stars.

In spring and fall, the folding doors create a semi indoor/outdoor area where you can comfortably enjoy the fresh air, stay sheltered, and be near the BBQ and the hot tub.

Upstairs in the Main House is a Master Bedroom with views across the valley, a king bed, and an ensuite bathroom with more views from its super-size bathtub and a shower. Next door is a small bedroom that can accommodate two guests: one on the twin bed and one on a roll out twin bed. This arrangement works especially well for a family with young children, who can be close to their parents next door.

The Guest Bedroom in the Main House is on the same floor as the living area. It can be made up as either a king bed or two twins. Two further guests can sleep on a double sofa bed. It has a garden view, and a bathroom next door with a bathtub with shower over. This bathroom also serves the living area. In the basement, there is a washing machine and dryer for guest use.

The Main House enjoys under-floor heating throughout, with air-conditioning in the Master Bedroom. There are three TVs with DirectTV and one DVD in the Main House.

Guest House

The private Guest House is on a lower level, below the main deck, and is reached from the deck by a spiral staircase, or directly from the front of the property. It is a superb design-led space with the same magnificient views as the main house. The bedroom and living area are open plan, separated by a floating wall with a sleek see-through gas fire. Enjoy the fire from the king-size bed or a love seat and chaise in the living area. The ensuite bathroom has a walk-in shower and separate wc. Off the living room is a wet bar with all you need (full-size refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher, coffee machine and toaster oven) to prepare breakfast, a salad lunch, or serve drinks.

Sliding doors open onto a spacious covered wooden porch - somewhere shady for hot days, a quiet place to read away from all the poolside activity, or another spot for watching the evening sunset over cocktails. The porch also has a folding Ping Pong table for those more actively inclined. The Guest House has air-conditioning and heating and one TV with DirectTV.

AMAZING VIEWS UP AND DOWN THE MOUNTAIN

  • 5 of 5
Amazing!!!! I traveled with my husband and our parents, and it was everyone's first time to the Napa/Sonoma area. The views were simply amazing. We could have spent our whole trip on the deck. The fire pit and hot tub were a great way to relax after a long day of wine tastings. The house is a perfect layout for 3 couples, 3 bedrooms all with a king size beds and separate bathrooms. The kitchen is equipped with high end appliances and the utensils to cook a lovely meal. I should of taken the owners advice, he mentioned that a week was not long to enough of a stay, and he was right we all wanted to stay another day or two just to spend relaxing at the house! Can't wait to go back.
Thanks Norman.

BEAUTIFUL HOUSE AND VIEW

  • 4 of 5
Wasn't quite sure whether to rate this a 4 or 5. The house is a 5, the view is a 6, doesn't get better than this view, but the road leading up to the property is a 1. It is a steep road with no guardrails and so narrow in certain spots that you have to drive backwards for a distance to let the other car through. Wife and daughter-in-law were terrified. Feel people should be aware of this factor. You do not want to drive that road at night, so going out to dinner is out of the question. We worked around it by having a good late lunch at a local restaurant and then enjoying some local wine and cheese on the outdoor terrace by the firepit. Not too bad!

That being said the house and view are spectacular. Very modern with a terrific kitchen. The pool/Jacuzzi and the firepit on the huge terrace create a great atmosphere to relax and enjoy the property. Overall, glad we stayed there.

SPECTACULAR VIEWS OF SONOMA VALLEY

  • 5 of 5
Wow...We have made several trips to the Napa and Sonoma Valley area for wine-country trips and this property was the best we have experienced. The views were simply amazing. We could have spent our whole trip on the deck. With the fire pit, hot tub, and pool, there's no shortage of relaxing experiences to enjoy. The open layout of this property is conducive to enjoying a terrific day with friends / family, taking in the beauty of the surroundings. The kitchen is equiped with all the high-end appliances / furnishings that a top chef could ask for. In summary, a super property to wrap up your day, enjoying the purchases from the many surrounding vineyards...or a great retreat for spending all day taking in the spectacular scenery.

AMAZING PATIO OVERLOOKING VALLEY OF THE MOON

  • 5 of 5
This is one of the most relaxing places my wife and I have ever stayed at. We spent our days there swimming in the pool (which was the perfect temperature), relaxing in the hot tub and drinking wine by the outdoor fire pit. We also took advantage of the well equipped kitchen and barbeque. Although there are many things to do in nearby Sonoma, once we arrived, we had no desire to leave because the place is so magical. The perfect place for a group of friends or family to spend a few unforgettable days together.

SPECTACULAR RETREAT FOR THE SOUL

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I escaped the hustle and bustle of San Francisco Bay Area for a week-long retreat to this amazing gem on top of the mountain. The views from sunrise to sunset were breathtaking and so relaxing. It was difficult to break away from just staring out over valley.

I think we spent about half of our time in the water. The pool was refreshing and the hot tub soothing. It was just what we needed and we didn't want to get out, but we did every so often to just lay in the sun, read or cook. The kitchen is well designed and made it fun to prepare meals with our friends that came to visit for a few nights. They loved it there too. There are plenty of nooks to escape to if you want some alone time and other spots such as the deck's fire-pit or open concept kitchen-living room that forms a wonderful community and family area.

Though we spent most of the time at the house, we did take some time to visit Sonoma Square and enjoyed strolling, visiting various shops and grabbing a bite at a local favorite, The Girl and the Fig. The wineries need no introduction, but if you enjoy beer, there is a great brewery/restaurant, Hop Monk, a few blocks off of Sonoma Square that you should also visit. There was so much we didn't do, but that is also the mark of great vacation. We cannot wait to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. We love The Girl and the Fig and its little sibling, the Fig Cafe in Glen Ellen but most of the time we eat on the deck!

CAVEDALE – HEAVEN ON EARTH!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Cavedale last year and it was the holiday of a lifetime.

From the moment you turn off the highway and onto the incredible winding lane, you know you're in for a special experience indeed.

Ten minutes later and you're greeted with a seriously impressive view – turkey vultures circle overhead, humming birds buzz around the gorgeous flowers, and the Sonoma Valley stretches out below you, dotted with the vineyards that make it such great wine country.

Now on to the house. You really are spoiled for choice with what's on offer. The pool is great when it's hot (often is in California), the plunge pool perfect if it's not. The open-plan kitchen/living area is well equipped and a great entertainment space, with big windows facing out towards the valley. The bedrooms are fabulously comfortable, the rooms bright and airy and the grill very big indeed.

But probably our favourite feature was the fire pit on the terrace – the perfect spot for a sundowner and then a lazy hour or two star-gazing.

Only an hour's drive from San Francisco and a stone's throw from Sonoma itself, Cavedale's a brilliant jumping-off point for sights in the local area – although, it has to be said, we chose to go absolutely nowhere else.
