This is a beautiful, 1900 square foot vacation home with beds for 6 adults and a pull out queen sofa in the lower level. Most people coming to Beaver Island look forward to its abundant nature and solitude. We love to wake up early, watch the sun rise and listen to the peace and quiet. On a clear day, you can even see the Mackinac Bridge from the cottage. We also love to just sit out at the beach house in the evening to watch the wildlife. It can be a very tranquil and quiet place.
The property sits on 10 grassy and wooded acres on Lake Michigan. We are secluded, you won't see another house from the cottage, but we're located just 5-6 miles from town. Not too close, yet not too far away.
Summers are pretty lazy and carefree. This is a great place for a family (or a few families) to reconnect. Sit around by the water, play games, read a good book (or 2), or enjoy 'smores over an evening campfire. Although located on 10 acres of Lake Michigan waterfront, this is not a great swimming beach. There are some nice sandy beaches on the Island for swimming.
St. James beach is a short trip from the cottage. You can buzz into town for a coffee. ice cream cone or a drink without draining your wallet. You can also go for a swim or spend the afternoon at the beach. There is always something going on. Take a trip to the bottom of the island and set out on a beach hike or just enjoy the beach. If you are looking for relaxation or a little adventure, this Island has it all.
Most people don't know this but September is a wonderful time to come to Beaver Island. The weather is perfect and the colors are spectacular!
The cottage features 3 bedrooms plus a hide-a-bed. One of the bedrooms is on the first floor. The cottage has 2 full bathrooms, there is a nice family area and kitchen with stainless steel appliances. We have a fire pit and a beach house. There is a nice deck with a picnic table that seats about 10. The cottage comes with plenty of fans if you need them but if you open the windows you will be treated to a very nice breeze that keeps the house very comfortable in the summer.
Beaver Island is the most remote inhabited island in the Great Lakes, located in Lake Michigan about 30 miles north of Charlevoix.
There are fine museums, gift shops, art galleries, a golf course and tennis courts, Island tours, house parties, classes at CMU, and dances and plays at the Hall. Much of what the island offers is free: beachcombing, bird watching, biking, camping, hunting, fishing, x-c skiing, or exploring the other islands. There are over 100 miles of scenic roads, and too many old trails to count.
You may come to the island by ferry service from Charlevoix, charter boat, or airplane.
Getting to the Island:
Two businesses provide regular air transportation between Charlevoix and the island. The trip takes about 15 minutes each way, and both carriers make several trips daily, based on passenger reservations.
Fresh Air Aviation - (231)237-9482 or (888)359-7448. Island Airways (231)547-2141 (Charlevoix).
Beaver Island Boat Company, Charlevoix - (231)547-2311 or (888)446-4095. A 2-hour ferry ride to the island from Charlevoix. Call them for prices. Bicycles cost extra. Ferries run daily from June to Mid-September (usually one crossing per day, but up to four times on peak travel days), with a reduced schedule (at least M/W/F) beginning in April and ending in mid-December. The vessel, Emerald Isle, is used for most journeys and is wheelchair accessible.
Car ferry service from Charlevoix is available from Beaver Island Boat Company (see above). Prices vary. You must make reservations to ensure a spot on the boat for your vehicle. Number to call is (231)547-2311.
You can also rent a car while on the Island:
Beaver Island Car Rentals (231)448-2300
Gordon's Auto Rentals (231)448-2438
We really enjoyed our stay at the Mermaid The house is nice; the lake view fantastic. We would enthusiastically book the Mermaid again. We appreciated:
The big deck and big picnic table.
Starry skies and campfires by the waterfront.
Huge yard good for frisbee, soccer, etc.
Wildlife wandering the yard.
The view, the view, the view!
Things to be aware of:
The house is NOT on Cable Bay (as is pictured on the VRBO site). It is within 5 minutes of town on the east side, immediately south of our most favorite hiking trail (Little Sand Bay), and within earshot of the bell buoy. NOTE: Property manager may have corrected the VRBO map by the time you read this note.
This summer, the house did not have a sandy beach. It has lovely grassy dunes to walk, but muck at the waterfront. The water past the muck is clear and sandy.
We did not find the basement suitable for sleeping. Although it is large, the basement is damp. We moved people into the large sitting room of the second floor for more comfortable sleeping. We had a party of 8. Again, we would definitely recommend this property, but want to be fair in our assessment.
We took great joy in discovering Beaver Island! Here are highlights of our visit (and some advice):
The island is suited to nature lovers. Miles of hiking on beautiful trails, biking, kayaking, swimming. We loved the place!
Geocaching will take you to some neat places you may not otherwise find.
Don't miss Little Sand Bay Nature Preserve. Gorgeous trail and only 1000 feet long to the beach.
Be aware that all roads outside town are sand / gravel / dirt. And it will likely rain a bit while you are visiting. We brought our new car over on the ferry. Sigh. It's all part of the experience.
Mosquitos. We mean clouds of hummingbird sized mosquitos. Bring DEET. (Note: worst when in the woods)
Weather is best determined by sky watching. Online forecasts were always wrong. You will experience several types of weather and temperatures in one day. Dress in layers!
Everyone is incredibly friendly. Be ready to wave at everyone you pass in your car.
Highly recommend: Dalwhinnie's Bakery; McDonough's Market (well stocked); The TOY MUSEUM (all ages)!!; Donegal Bay for swimming; the BIG sand dune for views. Could go on and on, but you will enjoy discovering the island on your own. We typically don't return to a vacation spot, but will definitely go back to Beaver Island.
I arrived on Friday and stayed till Monday with my family. This was the first time on the island for all of us. I had a small wedding with a few close family members and it was the best house and location that any of us could dream of. The house is so much more beautiful and lovely then any of us could imagine. Diane is very kind and replies quickly to any questions or concerns you might have. The house will forever hold so many wonderful memories for me and my family. I would advise all the people that plan on swimming to bring swimming shoes because it's not a sandy beach and good shoes or sandals for the grass because it can be a bit sharp. The fire pit and the beach house are both great! The pictures we took at the moonlight with the stars are absolutely breath taking. The house has sooo many fun things to do, even though it rained 3 out of the 4 days we were there it was never boring:) Everyone that stayed at the house said that they would love to go back again!! I know that I will.
Well, I can honestly say this is the best rental home I have ever stayed in. I can't even think of a constructive piece of criticism. It was comfortable with great beds. Lots of space, a beautiful view! I could wake up everyday there. It was close to town for all your supplies (and a gas station with a great shop even closer) but we never saw or heard anyone else at the home. The kitchen had all you needed to eat at home. The fire pit was great, the water was great, the island was awesome. If you are looking for peace and quiet in a friendly place where people are kind and care, then this is for you! My kids loved it and had a blast. They saw their first shooting star and the milky way! Love, love, love!
