If you are searching for a vacation experience that will take you back in time to a simpler, tranquil, and quiet era, this authentic northwoods cabin may be just what you are seeking. Located on the shores of beautiful and serene Douglas Lake, this lovingly maintained log cabin features rustic furnishings and decor. There is even a woodstove in the living room to warm up on those occasional up north cool mornings or evenings! The 1 acre property abuts land owned by the University of Michigan, which owns about one-third of the entire lakeshore on Douglas Lake. This makes for a very private setting, with acres of woods and shoreline for you to explore. The cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, living/dining area, and a sleeping room. The sleeping room is divided into two areas that sleep 6 in two bunkbeds. Each bunkbed has a full size bed on the bottom, and twin bed on top. The bathroom is located in a separate building, just step from the sleeping area, and has a shower, sink, and sauna. The cottage rental includes a canoe and kayak- perfect for fishing or exploring the shoreline.
This is a great spot for people looking for a true lake-side cabin experience - old school. The set-up feels much more like someone letting you use their place for the weekend rather than a rental experience. Open the windows and it feels like you are in a screened porch in the woods. Spent our evenings listening to owls.
The location is really unique in as much as about half of this lake is surrounded by undeveloped property owned by the University of Michigan. This cabin is the last one before this preserve... so in one direction there is not a neighbor for miles.
We rented a pontoon boat from Douglas Lake Pontoon Rental and would highly recommend that. We would also highly recommend dining at the Douglas Lake Bar. Great food and great service. Lots to do on a relatively small and very quiet lake.
Property managers were very responsive and helpful. Really just a short drive (15-20 minutes) from groceries and the bridge as far as that goes.
All that said - understand that this is not a rental house built by a lake with all the comforts of home. It is vintage... you wash mismatched dishes in the sink, go outside to get to the bathroom facility, and entertain yourself by listening to the radio, playing board games, reading, swimming and fishing. As long as that is your idea of a wonderful vacation (it is ours!) - you will absolutely love it.
LOVED!!!! My boyfriend + dogs got the pleasure of staying here for a long weekend in August. I loved that it had an older feel to it. Lots of privacy and great sandy beach for swimming. I really enjoyed all the property that surrounded the cottage, very quiet and relaxing. I also really enjoyed the sauna and canoe, even did some yoga on the dock. I can't wait to go back. Bill was so nice and always responded to my emails quickly and also went out of his way to mail me some clothing and journal I left behind.
