Nice Oceanfront Home

  • 5 of 5

I have to start off by saying that we had to fly over to Big Island very last minute to support visit my mother in law who was battling terminal cancer. The owner, Mel, was very caring and sympathetic and quickly made the home available for us. We had a very comfortable stay. The view in the backyard was beautiful and we enjoyed the ocean view. Everything was perfectly cleaned and the bedrooms were also comfortable. The kitchen was also fully equipped with pots/pans/and some basic condiments and spices. We thank you, Mel, for your kindness and compassion.

Nice place!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this nice home for 7 nights and really enjoyed it. It is a rather remote, private place with a wonderful native garden close to the ocean. It is just a short walk through the garden to the ocean, where we frequently sat down and watched the waves bouncing against the lava rocks. The floor plan is very comfortable for a family and the bed rooms were nice and clean. Due to the rural location, the house is rather quiet. You only hear the ocean in the background and the frogs at night, which we enjoyed. The owner is a nice person who immediately responds. We left something in the house which he found and kindly sent back to us. Certainly a place to come back when visiting big island again!

Real comfortable place to spend vacation on

  • 5 of 5

We had a 6-day stay in the property, and it's better than my expectation with the relatively low price. Furniture is delicate and bedding is clean n neat. I found everything I need in kitchen, and the glasses and bowls are enough to hold a party.

We left some stuff in the house after leaving, but they send it to us as soon as they found it. I appreciate the house keeper's fast response.

Owner's Response: Aloha Ruicheng Ma, It was a pleasure having you and your guest stay at my vacation rental property and experience the beauty and bountiful pleasure's of what the Big Island has to offer, from volcanoes, waterfalls, to lush tropical settings right in your own backyard and oceanfront view of the Pacific Ocean at your doorstep to watch whales, dolphins, turtles, and maybe a mermaid or two depending upon how many maitei's you may have had. As we say in the islands: Mahalo Nui Loa, or simply Thank You Mel:-)

Nice but partly needs up-dating

  • 3 of 5

The owner is very helpful and quick to respond to problems. Since he is living on another island, he sends housekeepers to help out. The house is in a very quiet area with just a short walk to the ocean where you can watch the waves crashing against the rocks. Behind the house, there is a little walkway perfect for morning strolls. The bedrooms are nice and feel new. Unfortunately, the kitchen and the bathrooms definitely need up-dating. The house heats up during the day when the sun is shining on the roof and not all of the windows can be opened due to broken or missing handles. There are two air coolers which cannot keep up with the heat during the day, though. The internet is working perfectly.

Relaxing Stay on Short Notice

  • 5 of 5

Due to the US Federal Government shutdown, our reserved housing at the KMC in the Volcanoes National Park was closed. Our travel agent pointed us to the VRBO.vom website to find a house to rent on the Big Island. We immediately liked what we saw and read about this property. We submitted our request to rent this property via VRBO.com and talked with the owner of this property, Mel. Mel was very friendly and easy to talk with and was proud of his future retirement home. He accommodated our schedule and rented his beautiful property to us on short notice. Our party of 6 adults (my wife and me, our daughter and her husband, and our son and his girlfriend) thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was relaxing. It was a pleasant stroll to the ocean via a lighted walkway to watch the beautiful sunrises and to watch and listen to the waves rolling into the lava rock shoreline. Our son's girlfriend took lots of photos of the intriguing vegetation (at least to us Mainland Easterners) along the path to the ocean. And with Mel's permission we enjoyed the starfruit and limes that grew in his front yard along with avocados. The bedrooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. We did have to use the portable A/C units one night because of the unusual heat and humidity that night on the Big Island. Thank you Mel for having these units available. As one of the previous reviewers commented, you get used to the sounds of the frogs outside the house at night. In some ways it was more relaxing. Both bathrooms were clean with no plumbing problems/quirks. Plenty of towels and linens were available. I spent time in the open and spacious living room planning the day's activities. The coffee-maker was greatly appreciated every morning. This property is out and away from Hilo (not a bad thing). So we did need a vehicle to get to/from activities on the Hilo-side of the island. Mel provided excellent directions to get from the Hilo airport to his property. We highly recommend this property. Thank you, Mel!

Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days on the Big Island to attend a family reunion and celebrate my grandmother's 100th birthday. We chose this vacation rental property because of its location to our family who live in the area and because of the beautiful waterfront location. The home was comfortable for our family of seven including my parents, husband, son, brother and niece. We enjoyed the lanai and the beautiful grounds, too. We will definitely consider staying here again. Mahalo Mel and Colleen!
