Rusty Johnson has been building custom home for over 30 years and has acquired a reputation for unique carpentry and architecture. This cabin was built as Rusty’s signature home, incorporating many of the custom techniques created and perfected over his career. For example, after finding a 100+ year old heart pine log in the Satilla River, he used the giant tree to build the spiral staircase inside. The Swamp was built as a getaway home for the Johnson family and has been greatly loved and cared for over the years. With the Johnson family now older, Rusty is presenting the property to the public to enjoy the same type of treasurable family moments.
This spectacular property is as close as you can get to the Satilla River, with the water flowing right in the backyard. The unique location of the property on the river allows for privacy and safety (the property does not flood when the river rises). The accumulation of peace, serenity, nature, privacy, and safety led to the purchase of the stunning property.
The cabin allows guest to be close to nature and still enjoy modern amenities. The cabin offers fishing and recreation opportunities without leaving the location. The cabin is absolutely the best way to get back to the good ol’ days.
We highly recommend this 'cabin'. We will gladly tell others about this place. We went there for our annual family gathering, and all have agreed that this is a place we'd return to. There were 8 of us, plus a toddler, and a grandpa who stayed in the downstairs apartment one night. There was plenty of sleeping room, with adequate floor space if needed for a couple of air mattresses. Being right on the river, with 3 canoes, paddles and life jackets available to use was nice, although we didn't know about that ahead of time so we took our own. The owner very kindly answered our many questions, although we did not receive a final message with information about check in and out times, nor other information we have since been told was in the message (lost in cyber space probably) The whole family enjoyed this location, the home is well equipped, with a grocery store and Dollar Store just several minutes away if something is desperately needed. Recommendation: towel racks in the bathrooms (we hated hanging our wet towels on the wood railings), possibly more seating in the living area. Also, just fyi in case this would be a problem for allergy sufferers, the downstairs apartment definitely has cigarette smoke odor. Thus we did not use it, except for the one night that grandpa stayed with us.
We visited Jekyll Island and St. Simons, and did some canoeing on the Satilla River, but we mostly just hung out and relaxed.
Thank you so much for making this home available for rental. It is well worth it. Again, we will tell our friends about this 'home away from home'. We look forward to a return, hoping to explore more of the Satilla River.
We can't say enough good things about this cabin. Highly recommend. As we hope to return. We went for much needed rest and relaxation. Having no Wi-Fi was awesome. The neighbors were very kind and informative. The owner always replied right away and was also kind and informative. Our elderly mother stayed in the apt and loved having her own space. The cabin is way more beautiful than the pictures. We loved hanging out watching the children play in the sand and river. The children loved being outdoors and the spiral staircase. They loved having the upstairs to themselves. Our three year old granddaughter took up with the neighbors cat carrying the kitty around for hours. We loved all our outings. We went to Jekyll Island, St. Simons, Savannah and then to Tybee Island on our way home.
The cabin was well equipped and accommodating with every thing we needed. We had no problems finding the heat and air thermostats as previous reviews stated.
We stayed through Easter. The children loved hunting eggs there. We had a nice Easter dinner with ham, corn and potatoes with all the fixings. Had no problem finding what I needed to cook Easter dinner. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed cooking in the upstairs kitchen.
They caught lots of fish, an eel and nice size turtle while canoeing the river.
The Wild Georgia Shrimp they talk about was as good as we heard. We had the shrimp at Latiude 31 on Jekyll Island and B&J's in Darien.
The only complaint we had was no where to hang clothes. The closets had no racks to hang clothes on. We accommodated but hope if we are able to return there will be racks.
Almost forgot the highlight of our trip was the Sunset Dolphin Tours on Jekyll Island with Captain Adam and his wife Jamie. Awesome experience seeing the dolphins.
Again, awesome stay at the cabin and hope to return.
Not really set up as a vacation rental. No written instructions for guests on the operation of electronics, location of amenities, or local area attractions. Main upstairs rental lacked many basics such as microwave, toaster, and adequate cookware. No heat in the bedrooms made for some chilly nights when the outside temperature dropped into the teens. Otherwise nice location and comfortable lodging.
Everything was fantastic. The home has plenty of space both inside and out. It is also well equipped. Everyone loved the stay adults and children alike. We hope to return again soon!
Everything was nice. I'd like to come back again under better circumstances. We were there for my aunts funeral. My family has not all been together in five years so it was great to sit around and catch up on old times. Would like to thank the owner for accommodating us.
Our whole family absolutely loved the stay. The cabin is wonderful, the amenities fantastic, and the accommodations simply couldn't have been more perfect. Thank you!!!
