We'd like to introduce ourselves. We are Gary and Joanne Bartell. We moved to Homosassa in 1988 to raise our family and quickly got involved with local politics to help shape the future of our community. Gary served as a County Commissioner from 1990 to 2010 and was chairman of the Tourist Development Council for 14 years. Joanne was a founding board member of the Nature Coast Envirothon, a high school environmental education and scholarship program. We both enjoyed spending countless hours over the years educating the youth of the community about the rare and precious natural resources found in this area. Our vision has always been to protect and preserve these amazing natural resources for generations to come.
Gary and Joanne Bartell purchased this cottage in 2012
The Riverlake Cottage property was originally owned by Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame major league baseball player (1915 - 1935) who once told a New York Times reporter that all he wanted to do in life is 'to play baseball and fish in Homosassa'. In 1995 we had the opportunity to purchase part of Vance's original land holdings but the Lakefront property was tied up in an estate until November 2012 when a for sale sign appeared on the front lawn - we bought it that same day. With only 10 private property owners along the entire Halls River, Riverlake Cottage is our opportunity to share a rare piece of Old Florida with you.
The Halls River is a rare piece of Old Florida. Largely undeveloped the river is a birder's paradise a fisherman's delight, and a photographer's dream. Blue Crab, Bass, Bream, Sunfish, Redfish, Snook, Ladyfish, Mullet, and various other species of fish can all be seen swimming about in the Halls River. In the sky above you will find Bald Eagles, Green Herons, White Pelicans, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many more species of fabulous waterbirds. Along the river you may find dolphin chasing mullet or experience a manatee giving birth. Most days the morning sunrises and evening sunsets are aglow with brilliant colors that will take your breath away. For the adventurous, nightime kayaking or canoeing reveals brilliant stars and planets above - and - with a flashlight shone on the water the surface appears as a sheet of glass and you can see fish, turtles, and other creatures underwater as if you are watching them through a window. Amazing, breathtaking, and captivating moments and memories await you at Riverlake Cottage in Homosassa Florida.
Thinking about one word = Peaceful. Okay- here is more
I am returning from my second visit, Joanne and Gary are the best, the property is clean, well appointed, help available if needed while balanced with respecting your privacy.
Some highlights= Kayaking with manatees, close to everything needed, good food in the area, while still a quiet retreat. I stayed longer this time and "worked" from there = an excellent wi-fi connection; when the conference calls run long = head on out and sit by the water. Ahhhhhh. The only problem = I wish I could have stayed longer.
I spent a few days seeking a retreat and for some kayaking time. The home, directions, local information and overall customer service greatly exceeded my expectations. Close by water, restaurants. Good wi fi, TV, ac etc. Thanks!
MY 11 y/o son and I stayed here for 10 days to get our Scalloping fix. The cottage was perfect and very clean! Joanne and Gary were very helpful with anything we needed and provided everything we could possibly need in the cottage and more. It was great to come back to a very comfortable a clean place after a long day of scalloping. We rented our pontoon boat from Magic Manatee Marina which is 5 min away (great place and helpful and friendly staff) for 8 days - lots of scallops and zero issues with the boat and service. Thank You Joanne and Gary for sharing your place with us! We will see you again!
What a lovely find Riverlake Cottage was for my husband and me. Set in a nature wonderland the cottage was very clean with comfortable beds, nice furniture, quality linens, delightful decor, and all the makings of home.
We really appreciated the thoughtfulness of all that was put in the cottage by the owners Gary and Joanne. From the box of scented tea candles to the extra rolls of toilet paper - every amenity we might have needed was there. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and cookware and there was even a little coffee station with a coffee maker, filters, grounds, creamer and sugar! The outdoor amenities were just as well thought out. It really made for so much nicer of a trip that we didn't have to run out and buy a cooler or a bait trap or fish nets or any of that "little stuff" that adds up so quickly at the store - it was already there. Last but not least in the thoughtful category was the binder of information that the owners put together. Of all the places we have stayed in over the years this binder was one of the best, most organized and inclusive, that we've seen. Gary and Joanne really went over and beyond in making the cottage guest-friendly.
We highly recommend Riverlake Cottage to our fellow vacation home travelers. Everything is exactly as shown in the photos inside the cottage and outdoors around the property - and - if you enjoy nature and the outdoors you will enjoy the coveted access to the Halls River which is truly a rare piece of unspoiled Old Florida.
All I can say about our stay at river lake cottage is it was wonderful in every way possible.
Joanne and Gary are lovely people and they certainly went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable.
The cottage was beautiful , spotless clean and we had everything we needed, the bed was so comfortable. We sat in the screened porch morning and evening with beautiful views. We cooked on the fire pit, that was amazing. River lake is so relaxing. You could park the car there and leave it till you are ready for home, but there are also lots of places to visit and really nice places to eat. We had great times fishing too, as we had the use of boats and canoes ,early mornings on the river are so lovely. I could greatly recommend river lake (a little paradise) to anyone, Joanne and Gary certainly make you welcome but never bother you.
We cant wait to go back to this beautiful cottage.
My girlfriend and I had the most peaceful and enjoyable vacation thus far. We took the Kayaks out to the main river from the cottage and saw everything from dolphins, eagles, manatees to all sorts of fish. We caught our first redfish 5 mins from the house. With the fireplace, sound of the water fountain and the bottle of champagne that Joann left for us, I may or may not be a father soon.
