About Denise Gilmour

We purchased La Vielle Scierie what it was a literally, as the estate agent put it, 'just a barn'. It did not have doors or windows and was half timbered, literally it had been a working saw shed. There was one solitary cold tap in the corner. After looking for 18 months in many other areas of the Dordogne within a two hour drive, in every direction, we kept coming back to this area. We had repeatedly holidayed in the area with our own children, staying in a variety of Gites. We decided in 1999 that it was time to start looking for our own 'little piece of paradise'. When we saw the barn we fell in love with the position, 'location, location', the views across the valley and the beautiful old stone construction. The estate agent thought we were made, but it had the 'tingle factor'. from 2001 onwards worked hard to restor the property and turn into the lovely home it is today. We have had so many lovely times in the garden with our children inside the barn, entertaining our friends. It is a very cosy social property. Despite the large open plan design of the interior we have managed to make it cosy and comfortable and are please to have received many compliments from our guests.

Denise Gilmour purchased this barn in 2000

Why Denise Gilmour chose Coux et Bigaroque

Why should you rent our lovely Saw Mill? Because it has been lovingly restored to a very high standard, because it is very well equipped, because it has fabulous gardens to relax in, because it is well positioned for great walks along the river banks, because it is close to all the main sites of the Perigord Noir, because it is surrouned by fabulous restaurants, food markets, national heritage sites, and many many more things. You can be active or you can use it as a tranquil retreat,.

What makes this barn unique

This is not just a 'base' to explore the Dordogne and the Perigord Noir, it is a well equipped home with a WoW factor that you can enjoy, it will make your stay twice as enjoyable. Before we were lucky enough to have our own property we spent many years staying in gites that were poorly equpped, cluttered and unclean, until we found a stone property that had been renovated and equipped as a 'home' to the standard the owners themselves wanted, we then repeatedly booked year after year. This is what we have aimed to do, equip and furnish the property to the standard that we expect for ourselves, it is not a temporary furnish, this is our home and we hope that all who stay enjoy the property just as much as the beautiful area it sits in.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at your beautiful property, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

in Lamillal Le Coux at easter 2014 as said was just perfect..

Our first impressions of this barn was WOW what a lovely position it is in,with beautiful spacious gardens which had a new pool in ( which was a hit with our 8 yr old daughter who had a great time as did we. we felt very relaxed knowing it was safe for her) and a fabulous BBQ area.(weather was fab so this was a well used area by all)

The barn it self is beautiful and clean, with a spacious open plan layout which offers a lot of room for everyone. The comfortable furnishings made you feel relaxed. It is so well equipped with a kitchen to die a chef i can honestly say i have never seen such a well equipped kitchen with everything you need and could have a full on dinner party if you wanted to. The hosts Denise and Kevin have put a lot of thought and effort into the barn to provide such a lovely relaxed feel . The three bedrooms are of a good size, with two double bedrooms and a twin with on suite on the ground floor where there is a good size family bathroom .

The house book is such a great source of information, recommending places to visit, a few of our favourites and loved are Monpazier ,Belves Chateau are everywhere, Chateau Milandes is particularly beautiful . The popular village of Beynac is a short drive away with many interesting sights to see including the chateau at the top. Not forgetting La Roque-Gageac ,Sarlat and Domme the list is endless as this area is soooo beautiful,

From the barn you can stroll into the village to fetch fresh bread and pastries from the local bakery, or even take a lovely walk to the river beach .We enjoyed kayaking down the Dordogne river which we highly recommend the views and memories of that trip will stay with us all forever..

We felt the location of the barn was perfect as you can get to all the places you want to with ease.

This was one of the best holidays we have had as far as self catering goes, this is because we felt totally stress free and at home here .

We enjoyed it so much we have booked the barn again this year, and we are taking our parents . We are so excited because we know that they are going to love it here as much as we do.

We think this barn is the ideal place for anyone to stay whilst exploring this stunning area of France. This is a great find and i know we will be spending many more holidays here..

A HUGE thankyou to Denise and Kevin for making our stay here special..

We just had a wonderful holidays in Lamial in Denise and Kevin's house. It was lovely to arrive and find a bottle of wine to welcome us with some fresh flowers.

Everything you want is there and you feel like you are at home in the Dordogne.

The region is absolutely beautiful and it is well worth the visit.

The kids absolutely adored the pool and the long garden to run through.

The weather was absolutely fantastic as well.

All was perfect!

Perfect stay in a peaceful setting.

We had a fantastic stay at the barn in Lamillal. Couldn't have wished for a more relaxing holiday. The house is in a lovely quiet position with a big garden, a nice shaded area for eating and a swimming pool, which is small, but ideal for us and our young children because it's raised, so they would have to try very hard to fall in. Really can't think of anything else that could have been provided. Kitchen is very well stocked, loads of books, dvds and cds. It's airy and cool inside, with three large sofas and a couple of chairs.

We were slightly worried about the open plan stair situation with our youngest, because he loves a staircase, but has two left feet and the master bedroom isn't suitable for very small children because they could easily crawl under and fall through the gap in the book shelves. However, this was easily solved as one side is blocked by a desk and we pushed a heavy blanket box against the other side which did the trick, so don't be put off. The second bedroom on the ground floor was perfect for them and they had their own bathroom in there, so no stumbling round in the night.

It was difficult to leave in the day because the kids were quite happy just hanging around in the garden and swimming, but we did manage to visit a few of the local attractions. There really is a huge amount to do in the area. We would definitely recommend Josephine Baker's chateau (milandes), which was a real highlight. Normally we have problems taking the kids round houses because they get bored quite quickly, but one of the first rooms is full of her costumes, so that was my daughter smitten and there were so many bathrooms it became a bit of a game to find the next one. The gardens are beautiful and there's a great cafe. We also enjoyed Castelnaud which is everything you would imagine a medieval fortress to be. Canoeing on the Dordogne river is a must, st cyprien market (sunday), which we preferred to Sarlat, Gouffre de Proumeyssac (crystal cave) was very exciting, especially when they turned all the lights off just before the son et lumiere!! We didn't manage to see any cave paintings because we just couldn't get out of the house early enough to get a ticket. At Font de Gaume at least, they start queuing at 7.00am.

All in all we thought it was perfect, the owners are very helpful and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing base to explore a very interesting region of France.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you enjoyed your stay in the barn and thank you for your kind words and taking the time to submit a review. The property is our 'second home' and we like to ensure there is everything people might need and not just a bare 'gite'. Thank you also for the excellent feedback on places to visit - the caves can indeed be very busy in July and August so an early start is needed, as is getting into Sarlat on market day! The Gouffre de Proumeyssac is amazing - the descent 'en nacelle' is slightly more expensive but you descend from the roof of the cavern via a gondola basket right into the cave. Milandes is a fabulous Chateau in it's own right but has the added advantage of learning about the life of an amazing person into the bargain. We always say Castelnaud is a real 'boys' Castle with all the fortifications and trebluchet and other medieaval weaponry. It sounds as if you had a great time and you would be very welcome to stay again, maybe a quiet week out of season to get to round all the other fabulous caves at Lascaux and Les Eyzies!

Lovely accommodation in great location

  • 4 of 5

We have just returned from enjoying a great stay in the Old Saw Mill at Coux et Bigaroque.

The accommodation was just as it was described on the website – full of character, with a beautiful living and dining area, and a lovely, spacious, private garden, with a pool for splashing about in.

The barn is well-stocked with everything you need for a good holiday; books, DVD’s, games (indoor and outdoor), a well-stocked kitchen and a space for outside dining.

It is set on the outskirts of a village, where you can pick up groceries etc but we enjoyed going to markets to pick up fresh produce; St Cyprien on Sunday morning was my favourite local market, and Sarlat - the biggest and probably the best - was about 15/20 minutes away. (Denise and Kevin provide details of the local market days, tourist activities etc in the barn.)

This was the first time I had used this website, and dealt directly with owners to book a holiday, but Denise and Kevin made it very easy – they responded promptly to my initial booking enquiries, and email correspondence, and provided helpful advice on the best route to take from the airport

The barn was well-located for visiting all the main sites and activities in the Dordogne and Vezere valleys. This was our first visit to the Dordogne and we loved it all, but in particular Sarlat, Roque Gagaec, Domme, Monpazier, St Cyprien, Les Eyzies, Font du Gaume and Lascaux caves, Beynac, the Chateux de Castelnaud, and slightly further away Rocamadour.

I’d definitely recommend this accommodation (and the Dordogne) for a great holiday!
