Hawi Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Spacious 816 Sf, One Bedroom, Bath, Living Room, Study, Kitchen & 34 Ft Veranda.

Lei O Kohala is located in historic North Kohala, in the ancient ahupua'a division of Puuepa. Surrounded by several na pu'u (volcanic cinder cones), the hillside setting has unobstructed views of Haleakala, Maui across the Alenuihaha Channel. Bordering Parker Ranch on the west, the south and east sides are also undeveloped, giving the vacation rental seclusion and privacy. Puuepa is the site of the ancient Mo'okini Heiau (temple) whose origins date back 1,500 years ago to the first human migration from the Marquesas. Puuepa is also the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great who conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands. Decades later, St. Damien became the pastor of Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church before taking on his destined work of charity at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony on Molokai. Lei O Kohala is located near the old sugar plantation town of Hawi with its many shops, galleries and restaurants. 2 miles further, quaint Kapaau town is the site of the original statue of King Kamehameha. Continuing on the Akoni Pule Highway, you will end at the outlook overlooking breathtakingly beautiful and inspiring Pololu Valley. To the south of Lei O Kohala Vacation Rental, world class white and black sand beaches are as near as a short 20 minute drive. Up country Kamuela is located 30 minutes away. Kona International Airport is located 50 minutes away.

Enjoy your morning complimentary Kona blend coffee on the veranda while as many as 20 species of birds greet you with their songs. Sip your favorite wine on the terrace under the venerable whispering ironwood trees. Don’t be surprised if the curious Parker Ranch cattle come right up to the fence and stare at you! Or if the wild tom turkey leads his flock across the open pasture. Lei O Kohala is located where the rainy part of North Kohala ends, and the arid landscape begins. This climate transition frequently gives birth to incredibly gorgeous rainbows! And blessed are those late afternoons as the setting sun paints the sky with hues of gold, pink, orange and red. On a clear new moon night, step outside, look up and marvel at nature’s incomparable grand display of the Milky Way spreading across the star lit sky. Lei O Kohala is a place of beauty, peace and inspiration.

The guest suite is a spacious 816 sf, one bedroom, one bath, living room, study with full kitchen. It is a totally separate unit with its own private entrance. It is so self-contained that you wouldn't think the guest suite was part of the main house. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a bay window dining area. Step through the double French doors and relax on the 34 feet veranda with views of the ocean and Maui. The living room is furnished with heirloom heritage koa furniture and a pune’e (day bed) for lounging. The bedroom is appointed with a luxury Stearns & Foster pillow top queen bed and accented with Hawaiian design quilted pillows. Need internet connectivity? Sit at the Tommy Bahama desk in the study and connect to the free wi-fi or hard wire. 40” flat screen TV. Full range 2.1 speaker system to plug into your iPod. Choice Hawaiian CDs are available for your listening pleasure as are a cooler, beach towels, mats and sand chairs for your beach outings.

Since its recent start up in April 2013, Kohala Guest Suite has received wonderful guest reviews, all with 5 star ratings. Come, stay at Kohala Guest Suite and experience the Hawaiian Hospitality as it is meant to be!

About Mel Yanos

Your host, Mel, was born and raised in North Kohala. As a vacation rental operator in North Kohala, he is one of an elite few who can make that claim. He learned the heart of hospitality from his parents who immigrated from the Philippines. Later he learned the business of hospitality at Cornell University. After a lifelong hotel career which took him to San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Puerto Rico, Boston, Anchorage, Kauai and Hawaii Island, Mel returns to the essence of hospitality as originally learned from his parents . . . giving from the heart.

Why Mel Yanos chose Hawi

After living in many parts of the country, Mel chose to return to his birthplace. It’s often spoken that one chooses to go to Kohala; Kohala is a destination. Unlike other locales, Kohala is set apart from the Mamalahoa Highway which encircles Hawaii Island. The isolated nothern geographical location and its warm residents give Kohala its unique sense of community unlike any other.

What makes this apartment unique

Lei O Kohala is about our ancestors, the melding of cultures, and the sacredness of the land. It’s about how we love and respect those around us and the environment we live in. Mel embraces these spiritual ideals and wants his guests to experience the Art of Hospitality in the old Hawaiian style and grace. He carefully crafted Lei O Kohala Vacation Rental so his guests will feel the peace, serenity and love from this special place in Puuepa.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mel's place is just magic. Very quiet, secluded, calm and pretty. Super comfortable bed! Wonderful selection of books, I really need to go back and have more time to read them. Hawi's rural and lovely, really easy going. Mel is a wonderful host - responsive, utterly unobstrusive, but really helpful. He lives right next door, but I only saw him when he brought me the most delicious breakfasts, simple lovely food, presented with fresh flowers. He provided coffee and cold drinks too! What a lovely treat, a far cry from the hype of Waikiki or the condos of Kona. If you're looking for a beautiful calm retreat where you can sit on the porch with a great book, look at rainbows, and watch Maui floating in the distance, this is it. If you're looking for action, look elsewhere than sleepy lovely Hawi and leave it to those who love it! Mel, thankyou so much for a wonderful stay. I only regret not staying on longer. Hopefully I'll be able to come back sometime soon, and bring my husband this time. I loved Hawi, and I loved your place, and your beautiful breakfasts. I especially loved the flowers! I saved them and am attempting to paint them here in voggy Kona!

We really enjoyed the guesthouse and Mel s delicious breakfast! We love the Northern part of the island for it s local market, chill atmosphere and less touristy feeling. We want to retire here!

Wonderful Return Visit

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks in 2014, and recently returned for 11 nights.

Rather than rehash a lot of what I said last year, all of which remains true, I suggest you scroll down to our earlier review (Judy and Tom or Tom and Judy, I forget which and can't scroll down as I write this).

We are already figuring out how to schedule ourselves for a couple of weeks next year. For us, it is hard to imagine a more pleasant place for a break, whether it is a matter of location, setting, accommodations, host, price, or otherwise. It's funny - landing in Kona, I wondered to myself "how am I going to spend another 11 days in Hawi?" And then, this past Saturday, departing from Kona, I wondered to myself "where did the time go? How soon can I come back?"

The apartment is very nice, the veranda with a view of Maui when weather is clear excellent, the location (unless you are hell-bent on lots of time at or in the volcanos park, Hilo, or other locations on the southern part of the island, etceteras) very good.

Perhaps the most important attribute of this property is not the property itself, but Mel, the host. We cannot say enough good things about him (let alone about the breakfasts he brought us every morning during our stay). Too, while the apartment was immaculate when we arrived, during our stay Mel did light house-keeping twice, which in our more and more extensive VRBO experience, is very unusual. He is just an exceptional host and very nice person, both attributes that contribute greatly to one's enjoyment of time on the Big Island.

Some other highlights . . . .

We did a 2-hour whale watch with Ocean Sports in Kawaihee, 20 minutes down the road, which was excellent.

The coffee shop on the right in town - excellent coffee, superb breakfast and lunch sandwiches, very nice folks. Bamboo Restaurant - pricey but worth it. Mel's suggestions about interesting places to visit = better than the coffee! The beach and park at Spencer Beach (at Kawaihee, 20 minutes down the road) in far better condition than on our previous visit and we definitely would go back. Suggestions made at the Welcome Center (on the left going into town) very useful. In addition to the grocery mentioned by another reviewer, there is a good grocery in the yellow buildings (former headquarters of Kohola Sugar Company) opposite the Hawi Banyan Tree.

Nothing but positives to say.

Great location

Within good distance of snorkelling beaches, awesome farmers markets (Hawi and Wiamea), nice moderate temperatures and of course an awesome host! Hawi is a nice little town with lots of character.

Not your average B&B...

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I arrived here after circling the island and staying at two other facilities for a few days. This place was perfect for us.

Rather than a single room among rooms for other travelers, Kohala Guest Suite (KHS) is the only rental facility in a larger home. It may have been a "mother-in-law" suite, but in any case, it consists of a large fully equipped kitchen, breakfast nook, a library/study/living room area, a bath and bedroom. There is even a long private porch along the front overlooking the Pacific and, on a clear day, Maui. The place would be especially inviting for long term visitors. Parking is in a carport.

Mel was a great host and is easily reachable via intercom when not at work. He fixed breakfast for us on two mornings and the food was delicious. He even provides beach towels and has great advice on where the best beaches are for your purposes.

A few odds and ends:

- AT&T cell coverage is spotty here

- KHS has good WIFI

- Be sure to follow Mel's instructions for locating the place. The gravel road is unmarked and easily missed. There are several houses along the way so don't give up until you've reached the end of the road. Drive all the way around to the back of the house to park in the carport. Don't feel too uneasy about driving on the grass as it grows so quickly here that there is no bare dirt path.

- You're about 2 miles south of Hawi and a couple more from Kapa'a. Restaurants tend to have odd hours in this region so be sure to check Yelp, TripAdvisor, etc. Minnie's in Kapa'a served some of the best fish we've ever eaten.

-There's a post office in Hawi but it's open only a couple of hours a day. Go to the P.O. in Kapa'a instead.

-Between Hawi and Kapa'a, there's a reasonably large supermarket called Tanaka's. That's about it.

-Be sure to drive a few miles all the way north to the end of the highway. And, visit Keokea Park on the way back.

Paradise in the north side of the Big Island!!

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have chosen any better. This was the perfect way to finish our honeymoon on The Big Island. The rental was spotless. Mel was an extraordinary host and made our stay special and unforgettable. He gave us some advise of thing to do around the area and his breakfast was fantastic, truly a Hawaii treat!

Would definitely come back for more adventures.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house to stay in! The house is clean and well maintained and all areas of the house are spacious and airy. The host made us feel extremely welcome and provided a great breakfast each morning, which we had the pleasure of eating on the large North facing balcony, with great views of the ocean. The house is ideally located for access to Kohala Mountain Road, Waimea, Hawi, Pololu Valley, and we even took a trip to Mauna Kea while we were staying here. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our stay and we would definitely stay here again.
