Last year we bought, and completely renovated our second apartment in Amsterdam. The apartment is in the 'Old West' area which has become very trendy, but still wonderfully convenient with shops and services that are necessary. If you would like to see reviews of our other apartment in Amsterdam, the VRBO listing is #295358.
This apartment is 55 sq.meters (600 sq. ft) and has every amenity: the bedroom has a queen-size bed, flat screen cable TV on the wall (a few English-language stations), a DVD player with a nice selection of DVDs, two large closets, a comfortable chair and a dresser. Large glass doors open on to the terrace, and the bedroom door can be closed for privacy. Off the hallway is a beautiful large shower, and there is a separate toilet. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances, including a Nespresso machine, microwave and dishwasher. The hallway leads into the nice-sized living room with a comfortable sofa, dining table, small bar, and bookcase. There are two large, double-glazed windows (it's very quiet) that look out onto the street below. Off the living room is a separate small room with futon, desk, computer, printer/copier/scanner, and a CD player. We also have a Vonage phone for free calls to the United States, and Canada and high-speed internet Wi-Fi.
It's the only apartment on the floor. The stairs from the outer door to the apartment are carpeted and unlike many Amsterdam apartments, are an easy walk with a landing between the first and second floor.
My husband and I used to exchange our New York City apartment with a good friend who lives in Amsterdam. After five or six years of loving the city, we decided to buy an apartment here. We have been coming to Amsterdam two or three times a year, each time for a month or two, for about 12 years. We decided to buy another apartment here as an investment. This apartment is also useful for friends, and family who come and visit us from New York as well as using it as a rental.
Joan Fabricant purchased this apartment in 2013
We searched for many months for a second apartment. In addition to the price, our main criteria were whether we would like to live in it and its location, thinking of friends and renters. We found this one. We both agreed on it right away. It had great potential, and we knew that with a serious renovation and tasteful furniture, it would be a very nice place.
This is a very comfortable apartment in a great location. Everything is new, including linens, pots, pans, dishes, etc. There is lots of kitchenware. We also have a portable travel crib
We have some very good friends who take care of the apt. They are wonderfully helpful to any renter, and lovely people. They will meet you with the keys, and explain anything you need to know about the apt or the city. They live a few blocks away should there be any problems. They renovated the apartment during the winter, and so they know it well.
Good morning Joan
Stan and I are now enjoying the third day of sunshine here in Amsterdam, which I understand is something of a record.....well, keep it up I say....
We appreciate your apartment so very much....everything about it show so much thought and choice of quality, that it continues to make us happy...I especially love the wall cabinet above the sink in the bathroom... It is truly a thing of beauty... We leave the doors open so we can see all the mirrors reflecting all the mirrors...
We have walked and walked and continue to find new areas and shops and find all the women gorgeous and the men Hollywood good looking as well... And so tall!
We have another day left after today and then it's home to California... Which isn't too shabby

What more can we say that hasn't already been said by other reviews. The pictures say it all but being there is the best experience. We had a wonderful 9 nights in this beautifully appointed and immaculately maintained apt. Not a single amenity has been overlooked by these caring owners and their wonderful friend Sylvia and her husband who did the renovating, decorating and manage it. Location, location, location. You could not ask for a better one. Convenient to museums, shopping and a great bakery right down the street. Thanks Joan for being such a gracious and informative host. If Amsterdam is on our itinerary again guess where we'll be staying?
If you're looking for the most perfect Amsterdam visit, take my advice and book this listing immediately; you cannot go wrong! My husband and I enjoyed this wonderful, immaculately maintained condo for 15 glorious days and only wish we could live here forever! While entirely accurate, the listing's description and photos do not do it justice. We found the apartment even nicer and more comfortable than described and the location is perfect for exploring both the city and countryside via tram, train, and bicycle. The owners, who are so friendly and helpful they feel like family, have provided everything one could want including a very thorough notebook with tips as well as restaurant and shopping recommendations. Thank you, J & N, for allowing us our very best ever VRBO stay; we plan a return visit soon! PS: The highlight of our visit was a "glass and chat" with our lovely hosts who were visiting in the city at the same time!
Joan, I must thank you so much for the experience of staying in your wonderful apartment.
Some years ago I stayed in your other Amsterdam apartment ( which was lovely) but I realize that one is now only for longer stays. Then, what a great surprise to discover that you have another apt there in Amsterdam. I'm so glad I found you again.
My trip was just what I wanted. Your apartment is so well located and convenient to everything. Not knowing the city that well, I didn't know where "Old West" was. It's perfect, a very short walk to everything in Central Amsterdam. And on the cold days ( it was December after all) it was so easy to jump on the tram just outside - to take just about everywhere. The neighborhood is 'non touristy' but a very central location, so I could enjoy the local cafes, restaurants and unique boutiques shops - it felt as if I lived there.
All the amenities in the house were new, clean and lovely - well thought out. Very comfy bed, too. And such a diverse collection of music and books to read. Plus, guide books and tourist information.
Your coffee maker was heaven.
As for Sylvia and Vito, your managers, (and friends), well, they are the most delightful people. And so very gracious. I'm afraid I called them a few times when I wanted to know a good Spanish restaurant, or a place where I could get real authentic Dutch food, and they couldn't have been nicer, and their recommendations were just right. The special taxi number they gave me that goes to and from the airport was really nice, and saved me money.
Thanks for answering all my emails with all those questions - you really know your city -
I can only give the experience in your apartment the highest rating!! and recommend it to anyone who wants a perfect and affordable Amsterdam stay.
I will surely return to your apartment.
"More than just a vacation rental....The apartment is a fully equipped apartment ready for long term occupancy. This is an incredible newly remodeled one bedroom apartment in pristine condition. Up two flights of stairs, it is all on one level which is a real plus given the narrow steep steps that are normally found in Amsterdam. The kitchen is fully equipped with all modern appliances. The bedroom is located at the back of the unit so there was no street noise to bother us at night. So many amenities--a computer for our use, a Nespresso machine for great coffee--and we were welcomed to the apartment by our gracious hosts with a bottle of wine, chocolates, and a beautiful vase full of vibrant yellow tulips. We are a fit married couple both 66 years old and found the location is perfect for visiting Amsterdam--just a minute from four trams lines but within an easy (20 minute) walk to all the major tourist sites. We highly recommend this apartment."
This is a fabulous apartment that served us comfortably and well during our recent week's exploration of Amsterdam. It is well-located just off the corner of Bilderdijkstraat and Kinkerstraat. At least two tram lines run on each of these streets with stops that are steps away from the front door. There are grocery stores pretty much in every direction within a block or two, as well as a market not more than two or three blocks south. The apartment is well and tastefully appointed, with a sleek, well-equipped kitchen that has a five-burner range and oven, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a computer with internet access and a stereo with CD player. While there is wifi, we were unsuccessful in connecting to it on our own devices. We informed Sylvia, the manager onsite, and hopefully this can be corrected for the next guests. The apartment is well stocked with a variety of guidebooks about Amsterdam that helped inform us about what we wanted to see and do. This came to be a home away from home for us and most definitely enhanced our stay in this wonderful, wonderful city. Thank you Joan and Sylvia.
I have just stayed here and attest that the flat is well located, renovated beautifully, and perfectly outfitted. The pictures are spot on. There is plenty of room for two persons and a third would even have their own space in the office nook. The 17 and 2 tram are right outside the door, supplies are within easy walking distance and the oud west is gaining in popularity.
I will definitely consider this apartment the next time I visit Amsterdam for an extended period of time. Far better experience than a hotel.
The only thing that could improve this place would be a canal view.
Oud West has become one of the most desirable, and fashionable neighborhoods in Amsterdam. It borders on the Jordaan and is a 10-minute walk to the center. Our apartment has 5 tram lines (the best way to travel in Amsterdam) within a half-block. The museum area (Museumplein) and Vondel Park are 10 minutes by tram (three tram stops). Leidseplein is within walking distance. We are a few stops from the Dam(or a 15 minute walk) and Central Station. We are close to the Anne Frank House. There are supermarkets, drug stores, a laundromat, as well as many great restaurants, cafes, bars, and small retail shops, all within a block or two. It is a wonderful mix of many small, boutique type shops as well as neighborhood stores and services. The apt is 3 blocks from"De Hallen" the beautiful new food and arts complex just completed that used to be the old tram depot.
