Overview

Landgrove House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom, 1 bath on 12 acres near major ski resorts, hiking, and XC skiing

We have a wonderful unique home with tons of character and all modern conveniences. Recently renovated, it was originally built in 1945 by our aunt, Barbara Comfort, an artist who was a legendary figure in Southern Vermont and is still fondly remembered. She built a rustic country home with a modern feel.

There are huge sliding glass doors in the living room, which provide lots of sunlight and spectacular views of the Green Mountains. Barn wood covers the interior walls and a huge wood burning stone fireplace warms the open space. The house was featured on the cover of American Home magazine in 1949. The home has now been completely renovated with all modern conveniences while still retaining a charming country feel. The house is fully furnished and well decorated with many of our aunt's paintings. Many brokers, designers, and contractors have told us that there aren't many other houses like ours in the area.

The house has two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed, and the other with two twin beds and its own gas fireplace. The living room couches double as beds and can sleep two more.

The kitchen and bath have new amenities including a wet bar, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. The kitchen is comfortable and open with a window seat in front of the large windows looking onto the southern lawn.

TV and DVD player are in the second bedroom for entertainment without the noise of cable TV. There is wireless internet if you bring your own laptop.

The house sits on 12 acres of lush woods and a large lawn with a small pond.

There is a screen porch for summer dining and a stone patio with an outdoor grill overlooking the mountains. In the winter, the mudroom can store skis and snowboards.

Our spring, summer, and fall rate is $2000 per month.

If you're looking for a picturesque country home with a real house feel, this is the place for you.

About Gardiner Comfort

Gardiner and Claire Comfort are siblings and inherited the Comfort Home from their beloved great aunt Barbara Comfort in 2012 and with Gardiner's wife, Colleen Werthmann (pictured), the three own the house. Gardiner and Claire grew up spending summers at the house with Barbara but lived, and still do, in New York City. Gardiner has spent lots of time in the mountains of the northeast, having studied at Skidmore College in upstate New York, so the outdoor environment of southern VT are perfect for him.

Colleen is originally from St. Paul, MN and has been living in New York City since college at NYU in the late 80's. Gardiner and Colleen work in theater, education, and television.

With the group's combined love of the house, and everyone's professional experience, you will surely be in good hands renting our home.

Paradise in the Mountains of Vermont

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for an entire month in the summer, and it was the most incredible time. A beautiful spot, a breathtaking view, crisp mountain air, and amazing stargazing! We are both artists, and we were looking for a cozy space to hide away and create. We spent most of our time peacefully working in the backyard, swimming in the nearby lake, and taking long walks on the beautiful dirt roads. It was an amazing experience.

For my 32nd Birthday I decided that what I didn't need was a crowded New York City bar with overpriced cocktails where I can't even hear my friends. Instead, and remarkably I might add given our busy city lives, I convinced a group of 6 friends to head up to Vermont for a long weekend. That was a month ago and we haven't stopped talking about it since. I can't recommend this house enough. It will instantly charm you and wrap you up in its incredible energy. The decor is pitch-perfect with beautiful furniture and walls lined with the original owners gorgeous oil-paintings. And the main room has a massive fireplace and two walls of floor to ceiling windows with views of the mountains. We cooked amazing meals all weekend with ease as the kitchen had every amenity. We took the snowshoes for walks in the surrounding forest. And might I add that the living room has a big wide-open space if you're looking to start a late night dance party. It was so great to turn the music up and carry on late into the night without fear that your neighbor in the apartment above would start banging with a broom handle.

Also, take a trip down to the Landgrove Inn for a drink. The owners there gave us so much great history and funny stories about the town. What a great weekend! It was a perfect getaway.

A unique find!

  • 5 of 5
The Comfort house was built by a New York artist. When she died the family restored the old parts with incredible whimsy and character, and added on new parts, to make it a bit more roomy and up to date. It is a wonderful place, with light streaming in the large windows, with a huge fireplace for cold in the winter. It is kept up immaculately, and the owners are a pleasure to deal with. It is a place with privacy and an incredible view of the mountains, there is walking and hiking all around. And if someone wants to have a drive to a town, there are places about 15 minutes away in both directions. For us, the house was special in many ways, but one of our favorite parts was its history and a sense that it had always been a place for celebration and creativity. A find.

So many pluses ... the house is remote, the view is calming, the main room is relaxing, the kitchen is well appointed, the beds are very comfortable. We went for Memorial day week end and enjoyed the fireplace so much. The living room is very cosy with walls made of reclaimed barn wood, art, antique furniture from the 50's. We just liked every bit of it; it was like being at a friend's place. The owner was really helpful to organize our week end. The description and pictures are accurate; the road to access the house is a dirt road, so it's very recluse in a wood opening.

Landgrove is a bucolic, classically beautiful country town with dirt roads, old barns and horses and cows grazing in the meadows. It is adjacent to the Green Mountain National Forest and is a perfect getaway for a weekend, week, or long term visit.

Winter visitors may take advantage of nearby Stratton, Bromley, and Magic Ski Mountains, which all had a tremendous snowfall this year. Each has outstanding downhill skiing, plus Bromley has summer alpine sliding.

There are numerous cross country ski centers, including Wild Wings, which has 24 k of trails, Viking, which has 35 K, and our friends at the Landgrove Inn, who have 11 K of beautiful farm trails. There are also miles of public use cross country trails just down the hill from the house in the National Forest.

The Landgrove Inn also offers horse drawn sleigh rides through the snow, and is a wonderful place to have a romantic dinner or drink by the fire. Our friends and inn owners, Tom and Maureen will take great care of you!

Fall in Vermont has its own majestic appeal. Leaf peepers will be thrilled by the variety of colors everywhere you look. Beech, maple, pine and other old trees provide a beautiful backdrop to this country setting.

Warm weather activities include mountain biking, road biking, golf, swimming, fishing, hiking, or simply strolling in nature.

Nearby towns provide interesting activities. Just over the hill, historic Weston has a renowned Regional Theater that always has a fun season of plays and musicals. There are also many galleries, antique shops, and, of course, the famous Vermont Country Store where one can sample delicious local cheeses, snacks, and other delightful Vermont foods that are all for sale.

Taylor Farms is one of many local dairy farms that produces delicious raw milk gouda cheese. You can walk around their farm and say hello to their animals.

Our friends Bob and Anne tap maple trees for maple syrup and sell it from their home in Landgrove Village. They're happy to show you around and, if you come at the right time in spring, you can even take part in the sugaring process! No trip to Vermont is complete without bringing home some pure maple syrup.

There are so many things to do in the Landgrove area and our house has so much character that you'll feel that you're a local resident.
