Honu Kai means turtle waters. We chose this name for the property because of the abundance of green sea turtles that reside in the waters surrounding Honu Kai and the Kohala Coast.
This traditional style, two-bedroom, two-bath, Hawaiian, beach cottage comfortably sleeps five people and there are 3 twin 'punees' in the living area for extras. The house has a spacious living area which separates the two bedrooms for privacy. There is a deck with outdoor dining table and large seating area to hang out
The art work and authentic Hawaiian charm create an ambiance which is warm and relaxing. Honu Kai has steps to the ocean and tide pools where you can snorkel and dive in some of the best conditions in Hawaii.
This Puako oceanfront location boasts some of the most spectacular views along the Kohala Coast and great sunsets. A panoramic view reveals an endless ocean in front of the house and Mauna Kea mountain views behind the property.
For those looking for more adventure the Kohala Coast is a paradise for ocean-related activities, fine dining, golf and world class spa facilities.
Come enjoy the 'real Hawaii' at Honu Kai. Thank you for choosing Honu Kai as your Big Island vacation destination. We are sure that it will be a vacation that will not be forgotten as many of our guests return to Honu Kai year after year!

Honu Kai has been in our family for two generations and is a very special place for us.
This is one of the bet snorkeling spots in Puako...some say Puako is the best diving/snorkeling area in the Hawaiian Islands. There is a channel through the tide pools which takes you right out to the reef. We love the quality relaxation time here. Honu Kai is a retreat for us!
Last summer we spend 4 nights with our family in this house. It was very nice, the vieuw was great and every morning we had breakfast with huge turtles. The house was clean and had everything we needed. If we go again to this Island we definitly want to stay here again.
We rented this house for ourselves, our son and daughter in law and toddler. The location in Puako is perfect! We could swim between the rocks in a sandy section just down the beach, explore tide pools right in front, and snorkel with the numerous turtles without driving. Within driving range, a mere 5 minute drive away, are three beautiful and unique beaches -- Beach 69, Haupuna Beach, and Mauna Kai Beach (in front of the resort but open to public). Puako has a small general store, but nearby Waimea has everything else one could need, including a great brew pub -- the Big Island Brewhaus. Mostly, we enjoyed our location so much we were happy sitting on the sea wall enjoying the tropical breezes and incredible sunsets. The house is not new or fancy or remodeled, which we were fine with. There's a lot to be said for a beach bungalow! It was clean and comfortable and had most everything we needed including beach chairs, towels, etc. There is an ant issue in the kitchen which we were aware of from reading other reviews -- a very typical problem on the islands and not a big deal to us. The lawn area is perfect for a toddler and the sea wall was helpful as a border to the bay. We loved putting our chairs up on the sea wall and watching the turtles swim and come ashore each evening. We would definitely return and continue our explorations of the Big Island! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
We enjoyed our stay here THOROUGHLY! Complete relaxation with no worries or headaches...can't beat the ocean air and sound of the surf as you wake up. Puako is a very special place- somewhere you can leave all your troubles behind and just soak up the sun-kissed, salt-infused energy, and a calm you've never felt in your life. This house encompasses all of those things and also makes you feel at home, wherever home may be.
Here are the facts about this rental
Over ran with MICE, COCKROACHS and ANTS.
These photos must of been taken YEARS ago.
Dingy and dirty, the owners have put nothing back into this place.
Mattress in the "master suite" was dirty with huge tears in the box spring, there were mice in the closet and cockroachs on the bed.
We've rented "rustic" Puako homes before but this was the absolute worst.
We left and aloha Debbie refunded the rest of our money. We shook out all of our clothes check the bags for stowaways and GOT OUT.
Shame on aloha Debbie and the owners of this rental!
In April of this year, my boyfriend and I spent a week in Puako at this house. The house was spacious, comfortable, and wonderfully located near Hapuna, which is one of our favorite beaches in the world. The amenities at the house are great - lots of beach gear, kitchen equipment, and comfortable places to nap. The house itself is a throwback to old Hawaii -- it's not new or modern, but clean, cozy and charming. (Well, it's clean so long as you put away your food / cocktail glasses each night! Otherwise, beware of the ants.)
Each morning it was a pure delight to wake up to the sound of the ocean, brew a pot of Kona coffee, and sit on the sea wall in the backyard as the light turns golden. Walking out amongst the tide pools was one of my very favorite things to do -- so many beautiful honu and other sea creatures to watch as the sun warms the island. And the sunsets were just brilliant.
So highly recommended. Next time, we'll bring friends and share the magic.
We just returned from our wonderful week at Honu Kai in Puako, one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. This was our annual family Christmas beach holiday, which we have previously spent in Miami South Beach, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Rico, Akumall Mexico and St. John USVI. Although we were 3 couples - ourselves and our 2 sons and girlfriend and wife - there was plenty of room for either privacy or family togetherness and this was our favorite rental of all. The fact that the house is so wide (not narrow like nearly every condo) and the yard is so huge, you have an incredible view of the ocean and feel like like you are the only ones for miles around. We especially enjoyed sitting on the little wall, watching the ubiquitous whales and turtles as well as enjoying the fantastic sunsets with glasses of wine. There were so many windows that there was always a pleasant breeze and the soothing sound of ocean waves. Meals on the porch were memorable and we enjoyed snorkeling with the turtles and fish right in front of the house. This is a comfortable house, more like your parents lake cottage than a sophisticated modern home and we loved the comfortable, casual decor but it it would not be for anyone who prefers new and modern. Everything was clean and the kitchen was well equipped but there were some problems with ants if any food was left out. After this, our group moved to a condo right on the beach in Kailua-Kona and although it was very nice, we definitely missed Honu Kai.
The people at Aloha Debbie were very friendly and helpful when there was an unavoidable problem with the house which delayed our check-in date and we highly recommend this company. We are already looking ahead for when we can return to the Big Island and we will definitely want to return to Honu Kai!
Snorkle boat cruises. Whale watching from November - April.
Best diving in the world!
