Adventure! Fish, Swim, kayak, Surf, from the property.
Check in is at 4pm and out at 10am.
Beautiful location nestled between the mouth of the river and the ocean at Honolii Beach. The River House is a rustic family style home which has 180 degree views starting with the river then panning out over the ocean and is only 5 minutes from Hilo.
Enjoy your morning coffee in the living room or lanai looking out at the river or the ocean! Have a picnic on the lawn in the magnificent nature Hawaii is known for.
You can enjoy from the River House all sorts of water sports including Kayaking, Stand-Up Paddling, Surfing, Boogie Boarding and Swimming.
The home will sleep 10 and has an open floor plan. The kitchen has old world charm with copper counter tops and a butcher block counter by the stove. The rear of the house has a very large family room and bay windows. Perfect for a traveling halau for practice and sleeping! (The family room measures approximately 375 sf or approximately 25 feet long by 15 feet deep and also sleeps 4.) The view of the river is astonishing from these windows!
The first floor has a guest bedroom; this room sleeps 2 and has a queen size bed. Also located on the first floor is a powder room and full bath. The master and another guest bedroom are upstairs. The master bedroom is very large with sweeping views of the river and ocean and an en suite full bath. A king size bed is in both the master bedroom and guest bedroom upstairs. The home is secluded and the views are unobstructed by curtains. We have a caretaker who lives on property, who can leave the property for your stay or be there to assist with your questions.
Once you arrive on the property, you have reached true paradise! The surroundings and ambiance are truly magical! Great location for any vacation/outing/venue. Spectacular place to get married!! A stay that we will never forget! The property manager and caretaker were extremely helpful. We will definitely have to enjoy the property again. Mahalo!!
The good news is that the location of this property is idyllic in terms of being part of authentic Hawaii landscape and the magic of the Hilo side of the Big Island. The house is ten minutes or less from the center of Hilo, but you'd never know it because it's nestled in nine acres of rainforest, next to a spring fed river with 30 ft. waterfalls, sea turtle habitat, and looks out on a beautiful black sand surfing beach--one of the best on the island. our group loved the views, the seeming isolation, the kayaking, and beach access. The spot was magical. Here's the bad news: The house is not being maintained well, and the caretaker was not on his game during our visit. We arrived just as the sun went down. No lights at the front of the house to see how to enter. The caretaker had not stayed around to greet us. We were told he'd be there starting at 4pm. My husband happened to look under the doormat and discovered the front door key. After moving into the house, we spent time searching for light switches to understand the layout of the house. They were behind doors, behind refrigerators, and some were inoperable. So were a number of outlets. There was not enough toilet paper in the bathrooms (1/4-1/2 roll each), no towels in any the bathrooms, and someone's clothes were left in the dryer. We visited in the winter and it became very cool at night. There were not enough extra blankets for the beds. The window screens didn't fit well, so mosquitoes joined us at night. Two back doors ( the house has several side and back entrances to access the river and yard) could not be locked or easily secured. The doorknob in the master bathroom continued to fall off as we used it. The caretaker knew about the problem and said he couldn't keep it fixed. My husband said a screwdriver is all he needed. But perhaps one of the worst eccentricities of the house was the fact that there were no curtains! This home was filled with beautiful window walls, which adds to the esthetic of the spot, but at night anyone could peer into the house, even the caretaker. People were on the beach 50-75 yards away with flashlights until after 11PM the first two nights.
It wouldn't take much to make sure lightbulbs are replaced, screens fit, locks work, basic furniture is in place (a coffee table?) and hang curtain or shades. The rent for this property is substantial, the scenic value is worth it, but the house in this state is not. Upgrades will insure more rentals, I promise.
This past summer I was responsible for organizing a photo shoot at the Hawaii Botanical Tropical Garden just outside of Hilo. As a treat for the crew and myself, I booked us into homes instead of hotel rooms. The house was large enough that we could share a house as co-workers and still have privacy. This location is beyond compare with it's access to both the river and the ocean. At night you hear both the sounds of the waves and the rainforest, it's magical! The property manager and caretaker were very helpful and attentive, responding to and accommodating every request quickly and professionally. I would highly recommend this property for any family or group retreat and hope to come back here again myself for a proper vacation!!

We had a family gathering of 8 people and found the house to be comfortable and entirely unique. This isn't a fancy place - it is an older house, loaded with charm. The magical part of the River House is the property itself - the house is between two small rivers, peeking out under a bridge at the surf - complete with surfers. We saw turtles in the river - again, magical - and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The location is also good - the site is close to Hilo and all the area has to offer - waterfalls, markets, museums and the volcano. Eat at Ken's House of Pancakes for a great local experience.
We had bad luck with the weather - lots of rain - but, it is a rainforest, so that's the way it goes! Maybe we can experience the area again at a sunnier time!
We were fortunate enough to be allowed to stay at the River House in Hilo. The owners were so accommodating with our requests, they are the best!!! I also loved the location!! The house is beautifully positioned on the river with the ocean and beach just outside. Amazing views to wake up to.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and cannot wait to make another trip!! Thanks for the experience!
