About this property

Classically designed, modernly appointed, family style South Carolina beach home

Over the Intracoastal waterway and under Spanish moss-draped grand oaks you have arrived in a timeless place, a haven for all God’s creatures, a hidden fountain of youth called Edisto Island. Our tiny paradise with its pristine beaches has been virtually untouched by commercialization and is one of the last undeveloped islands on the Atlantic coast. Edistonians cherish their cultural heritage which dates back to 1570 when Spanish missionaries attempted to convert the Edistow Indians. The golden era began in 1790 and lasted until the Civil War when plantation owners amassed huge fortunes from the highly prized, long staple cotton. The Sea Cloud house name derives from the 19th century marriage between and contraction of the Seabrook and Mc Cloud family names. The newlyweds chose the name for their antebellum mansion sited upon a cotton plantation here on Edisto Island. Your Sea Cloud was built in 1995 by Karin and Al Gleaton (Columbia, SC) and R.H. Belser, III (Charleston, SC). We are, as you can imagine, proud owners. We are pleased to be your hosts and desire your vacation to be memorable.

Sea Cloud's facade displays the traditional Charleston design double stairway ascending to a veranda. Our 40 ' front porch has comfortable seating, is shaded mornings and afternoons and faces East, towards the morning sun and the ocean. Entering the house through double French doors is the main salon with four equally sized bedrooms tucked away on each corner of the main floor for maximum quiet and privacy. The colorful (Lime, Aqua, Navy, Yellow) bedrooms have queen-sized beds, ceiling fans, ample closets and are connected to big adjoining bathrooms, accessed via a hallway connecting the bedrooms. Each bedroom also has a unique design feature : separate, mirrored vanity and sinks in each room. We remodeled one bathroom in April 2022, enlarging the shower space and adding a rainbird and wand shower system. The driftwood ceramic tile and new glass shower enclosure with stainless fittings is gorgeous !
The spacious upstairs loft has four more beds (2 queen and 2 twins), a sunny children's play area, and a spacious bathroom with a double basin vanity, skylight,, and full bathtub & shower enclosure.
The vaulted-ceiling main salon combines the living room, dining room and a superbly equipped kitchen. White marble counters were installed in April 2022. A 160 square foot screened porch, off of the kitchen in the back, is carpeted and features cushioned seating, a picnic table, and a large refrigerator for your extra drinks. A smaller, open-air, back deck was designed to capture a 50 foot tall ancient live oak tree rising through the deckboards. There's a new (June 2022) walk-in shower stall (with hot and cold water) on ground level and a large, pro style barrel-style charcoal BBQ grill. The house is built 10 feet off the ground which helps to both capture the ocean breezes and provides covered parking underneath the house for six large cars. We installed a spacious, exterior cargo lift pursuant to multiple patron requests and it has become a popular feature and valuable timesaver for moving your things from the driveway into the house. See the info sheet in the house on how to operate it.
Sea Cloud is on Myrtle Street, which is one street over from and parallel to Palmetto Boulevard, the main drag. Being off of Palmetto Boulevard is advantageous for two important reasons: 1) it's significantly quieter on Myrtle St. than Palmetto Boulevard
2) it's safe for children to play in the front or back yard.
Whaley's Restaurant, our fave burgers and beers joint, is 10 blocks down the street- a short 10 minute walk. Whaley's claims to have the coldest beer and best hamburgers on Edisto Island !
Rental week is Saturday to Saturday during the summer months. Only weekly rentals in the high season. Please note that we do not provide linens, but there is a nearby source on the island (Edisto Essentials) as described in our electronic welcome letter.
NO early check-ins, no exceptions. Sea Cloud is often booked back to back and we need the time both for our superb housecleaning service and for us to maintain the home, and make repairs in- between renters. 2023 weekly rates have necessarily been increased due our own costs. This (2022) summer demand has meant near 100% bookings and our comparable metrics demonstrate we are still competitively priced, but with a measurably better "product". See our reviews. Unlimited Internet Service. Please be kind and sign the guest book and write a review on the vrbo.com website (# 462779). Your review is sincerely appreciated and valued. Daily delivery of Charleston’s award winning newspaper, The Post & Courier, is our small gesture of thanks to you for choosing our beach house for your vacation. Remember if y’all enjoyed your visit, tell your friends. If you didn’t, tell us.

Perfect House for Thanksgiving Gathering
We had a great family gathering in this large house. The kitchen was well appointed and had everything we needed to prepare a large meal. The additional refrigerator was a huge bonus. The house was clean and the furniture was comfortable. The elevator lift was very helpful taking heavy items upstairs. I would definitely like to stay there again.

Great family home equipped with everything needed to have a wonderful vacation. The upper room was great for the kids. The open kitchen living room was special. The screened in back porch was my personal favorite in the mornings!

Great vacation getaway home!
My extended family spent Thanksgiving weekend 2022 at the Sea Cloud. The home was spacious and inviting. Everything was as advertised. There was enough room in the house for large family gatherings and also provided space to just escape. We liked everything about our time in Edisto and at the Sea Cloud and will definitely visit again when thinking about Edisto!

About the host

Hosted by Karin Gleaton

Host profile image
The Belsers and Gleatons are: Karin, a retired special education teacher and her husband Al Gleaton, a Columbia homebuilder. Hugh, a retired naval officer. Karin and Hugh Belser graduated from the University of South Carolina in the 1970's. While attending Carolina, it was our Spring Break ritual to book large houses on Edisto Island and gather friends for a week of beach fun. That tradition continued off and on during the 80's and 90's. In 1994, we discovered and bought a wooded lot on Myrtle Street . Al Gleaton began building Sea Cloud in 1995. It was his masterpiece and our pride and joy.
As Karin is fond of quoting, '"The beach is where you go to slow down; Edisto is where you go to stop'"

Why they chose this property

Few can match Sea Cloud for comfort, quality, and value. First, the house is thoughtfully designed, is solidly built and well insulated = quiet and cool. Second, we personally manage the property. Finally, it's a big house where four couples can choose to spread out or congregate.
Our faithful patrons (over 60% of 2017-2019 bookings are repeat customers) are our best advertising. Their testimonials emphasize the care and attention we give them prior to and during their visit to our 'home away from home.'
Capital improvements in the recent past include new hardwood floors, replacement front deck landing, new beds, two new television sets, new A/C system (May 2019), new smooth-top oven and range (November 2019) and a Keurig coffeemaker.

What makes this property unique

Sea Cloud is an architectural gem featuring a Charleston style double staircase leading to a 40 foot wide veranda. The front porch has four new Adirondack style comfortable chairs and tables. We're proud of the craftsmanship and thoughtful design of our beach house. For example, Sea Cloud has a separate mirrored vanity and wash basin in each bedroom, plus hot and cold water in the two downstairs outdoor showers. The top level has a length-of-the-house loft area with four beds for the younger set. We also have a second full-sized refrigerator on the back porch for cold beverages. Finally, who else, but Sea Cloud, delivers the (Charleston) Post & Courier newspaper to your doorstep every morning ?
