|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Secluded half acre spot with gorgeous views of the ocean and beautiful flowers and fruit trees. The floor plan is ideal for two couples or families because the bedrooms are in two private buildings separated by a walkway. The main area has a master bedroom, bathroom, laundry, kitchen, dining and living areas, and a great lanai with outdoor furniture and grill. The other is a bedroom and bath. There is high speed internet along with a Dish(R) TV, DVD, CD Player.
Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.
Daniel Potaracke purchased this house in 2012
We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property.
Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself.
What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do.
The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.
From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting.
Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.
I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!
We stayed at the Mango House for the second time this winter. Everything was as wonderful as the first time. The owner, Daniel, couldn't be anymore gracious and does a fabulous job of keeping the surroundings lush and beautiful. The house itself is very clean and has every convenience needed or wished for. The location is very peaceful and serene and one could be happy just sitting on the lanai and enjoying the ocean view. If more action is wished for there are many activities available within a short drive. We feel we have found the perfect Hawaii vacation spot.
This was our second time to stay here! We just can't say enough about it! It is everything you would ever want and more - private, surrounded by a landscape of tropical trees and vegetation, amazing host that just bends over backwards to make your stay perfect (this year he hung fresh bananas from our lanai and we would grab one and enjoy it as we took in the amazing view of the ocean, the surrounding tropical paradise, and watched the birds in the Mango tree), a clean and delightfully furnished house and guest house in back, with every amenity we could possibly need to make our stay in Hawaii extraordinary! We stayed at a couple other VRBOs, and their photos and description DID NOT match up with what we experienced. This home, however, meets and exceeds all that is advertised in it's VRBO site!!!!
We stayed at Mango House for a week. We will be back! The house and studio are clean and beautiful and fully equipped. The view from the lanai of the beautiful garden and the ocean is amazing. The setting is peaceful and secluded but close enough to make trips around the island.
The friendly owners were available for any questions and supplied great resources for activities on the island.
We stayed at the Mango House for one week and were incredibly impressed with the home's surrounding beauty, views, and quiet serenity. We were content to sit on the lanai sipping coffee or wine and watching the views, day and night. The home is surrounded by lush, beautiful tropical foliage with an awesome view to the ocean. It is far enough away from busyness but not too far for a few hours here and there (Volcano Park, Hilo for tourist shopping, restaurants, etc.) Very convenient to have a full kitchen (including outdoor grill) and laundry facilities. We enjoyed our time there immensely and thought the hosts were outstanding.
My husband, our friends and their two young babies spent 10 days at Mango House over Christmas and New Year. It's hard to capture in words how perfect our experience at Mango House was. From the gorgeous, secluded setting, to the accessibility to many points of interest (both Hilo and Kona side), to the hospitality, generosity and kindness of the owner, we couldn't have wished for a better holiday. Truly the only difficult part was leaving. We explored the local area, running to Laupahoehoe Point a couple of times, enjoyed nearby Waipio Valley with two days on the black sand beach, bought produce and a few goodies at the Hilo Farmers Market, snorkeled Kapoho tide pools, watched a Mauna Kea sunset, enjoyed the drive to Captain Cook Monument and a snorkel in the pristine water, scuba dived at night and were delighted by 10 manta rays, drove to south point, and sometimes just sat on the Mango House lanai reading books and chatting. My point is that you can either spend your entire trip relaxing in the beauty of Mango House (and be perfectly happy), or if you have trouble sitting still for too long (like us), you can enjoy Mango House as a home base for many adventures. We have every intention of returning to this little slice of heaven that we've missed since the day we left. Thank you, Daniel! Aloha!
No planes, trains or traffic. About as quiet and peaceful as can be imagined, with enough space and amenities to delight. The setting is exquisite and exceeds both expectations and the photo array, as frequently noted. Scenic drives and mostly short hikes abound. Used the snorkeling gear, boogie boards and grill. Improved Saddle Road provides easy access to sunny west shore beaches of your choice or go north for a completely different local scene that takes you to the same beaches. If you need crowds or constant sunshine go west. But if you enjoy nature, each other and the periodic showers that nourish this tropical lookout, you'll land at the Mango House.
Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.
Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.
One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.
We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.
This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.
This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.
This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.
We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.
The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.
The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.
The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.
A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.
We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.
