About Daniel Potaracke

Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.

Daniel Potaracke purchased this house in 2012

Why Daniel Potaracke chose Laupahoehoe

We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property.

Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself.

What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do.

The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.

What makes this house unique

From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting.

Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!

A wonderful 13 days

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for only 13 days but we both wished that we had made longer reservations. The photos enticed us to stay here but the photos don't do it justice. It is a beautiful and comfortable place to relax away from the hustle and bustle.

Owner's Response: When I receive a review like this, I know that we are doing something right. Of course, location is a good thing as we are secluded and have nice views and quiet but, we have strived to keep the Mango House as clean as can be. We have upgraded and added several items at the Mango House. Keeping the grounds nice takes time and a lot of work but, I'm not complaining when I see reviews like this as it makes it all worth it. Thank You very much for such a nice review!

2 couples, 2 weeks in Paradise Aug. 2014

  • 5 of 5
Clean, very well appointed and comfortable. The yard is beautifully landscaped and very private. The other home on the property is not visible from the Mango House. Several fruits growing around the yard. The home owner was there during our visit and he respected our privacy at all times. Lovely views of the ocean from the lanai. A vehicle is a must as it is located 28 miles from Hilo. Wonderful breezes made our stay very pleasant. There were 2 couples in our party and the layout made it all very private.

Owner's Response: Having guests is a big responsibility and I try to do the best for all of them. Before they show up, the yard area is taken care of as best can be so I don't have to be over there doing anything. I also will watch to see if the car is gone so I could cut the grass or whatever needs doing without bothering the guests. I feel as if the Mango House is theirs and I am just the caretaker. I only give my guests as much help and interaction as they want as they are number one with me.

True paradise!! Beautiful park like surroundings.

Daniel was a wonderful, generous host. He left delicious fresh fruit from the property for us to enjoy. The ocean view and lush setting was exceptional. The Ohanas were clean, comfortable and a perfect place to relax.

Owner's Response: I love being able to take care of my guests. There are fruits like pineapple, oranges and limes and coconuts that come into season and I'm more than happy to share them with my guests. That is part of the Mango House experience, I feel. They come to the Big Island and expect to have a good time and relax and have what the Big Island has to offer. Having fresh fruits is one of those expectations and if I can help I will if it is in season. Sometimes, it's those little things that can help someone have a great vacation. The Mango House is in an area where there are lots of farmer's markets as well to pick out fresh fruits and vegetables that you don't find anywhere "back home", the Hilo farmer's market is every day with Wednesday and Saturday being the best days. On Sunday, there is a small farmer market right in town by the gas station so, there are plenty opportunity to buy fresh...and with the Mango House having a full kitchen to take advantage of it. Hideway Under the Mango Tree

  • 5 of 5
We had the pleasure of staying at the Mango House for eleven days in April of 2014. While the weather was not perfect, we thoroughly enjoyed the home's view, seclusion and feeling of living amongst tropical plants. The Mango House is well equipped, designed and is bright and cheery with its pastel colors and use of white. We also enjoyed Daniel's hospitality and cheerful demeanor.

Owner's Response: I always think of my guests as being just that "guests" and try to treat them as such without being intrusive in what is their time and vacation. I enjoy interacting with my guests and give info or advice on what to do for a better Big Island experience. Sometimes, the weather doesn't co-operate and rain quite a bit so, I will recommend doing the "dry side" of the island for those days where there are a few great beaches or go see the many waterfalls that benefit from the rain. Akaka Falls can be amazing after a rain. Thank You Brian and family for your kind words. Daniel

Mango Cottage -- A Quiet Getaway in a Lovely Setting

  • 5 of 5
We loved being in Mango Cottage on the hill overlooking the ocean in a lush surrounding
of foliage. It is 30 scenic miles from the great Farmer's Market in Hilo and on the way North to Waipio Valley and over to Hapuna Beach. This was our second time in Mango and fourth time on the hill close to Laupahoe point. The Fifties Restaurant in Laupahoe has delicious meals and great pies. It is quiet and lovely for meals on the front lanai of Mango Cottage.

Excellent Accommodations!

  • 5 of 5
We just finished up our stay here and it was amazing. Comfortable, clean and very affordable! The caretaker was a delight as well. You will have to do some cleaning when you leave, and take the trash to the transfer site, but it was so worth it. The view is breathtaking. Just don't try to find the property the first time in the dark. It is situated a ways back from the road. Once we found it though it was a breeze after that. Thank you for making our trip amazing. It was nice not to have to share a room next door to others, and the house offers optimal privacy because of it's location! Just splendid! The extra house is nice too, for couples or kids who need privacy. Bathrooms were cute and the house is decorated nicely. Lots of dishes, a blender, microwave and more. There was a lot of food leftover from the previous tenants. Oh yeah and an awesome coffee maker!!! It has everything you need! :)

Owner's Response: Thank You for your excellent review. Hearing such praise makes it worth while for me. I value my guests a lot and enjoy hearing from them. I try!
Yes, I am a bit of a stickler for cleanliness and we have to be on top of it.
It is the tropics after all.
Yes, the Mango House is "off the beaten path" and that is what makes it a little more unique as it is secluded and private which, is definitely a plus for our guests. We do give good directions via email so, no matter which way you come from, Hilo or Kona, you can find it. One does need to pay attention to detail though. Once you are there, it is so worth it.

Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.

Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.

One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.

We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.

This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.

This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.

This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.

We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.

The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.

The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.

The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.

A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.

We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.

Notes:
The covered lanai is a great place to sit at the outdoor furniture while grilling or having morning coffee or that glass of wine later on. Walk around the property and enjoy the flowers and jungle-like vegetation. The property is very very quiet. When the stars come out, there are millions to see and watch for falling stars. The ocean is just a look away over the lanai or out the large windows from inside. This is place you can stay at all day/week or use as a base for sightseeing, swimming, biking, golfing or many other things to do on the Big Island.
