Overview

Thurmont Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Single BR Hideaway to enchant Hobbits or Honeymooners!

One bedroom with queen bed; one bathroom--Amazing place!

NEW in Spring 2013!

COUPLES SPECIAL! Each couple will be greeted with a fresh vase of lovely cut flowers, and a complimentary bottle of wine to help make your stay special, and memorable!

The newly rebuilt Little Round House showcases a highly creative, wagon-wheel-inspired design that incorporates magnificent antique, hand-hewn chestnut barn beams. It is an earth-sheltered, passive solar, cozy nest for a totally unique, romantic getaway--close to the earth, but total comfort!

Features include one roomy but very cozy, romantic bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining area adjacent to a living room area. All are bathed in natural light from huge windows and skylights, and heated by a beautiful full-flame Avalon Eden stove, and fully air conditioned for total comfort year round.

Furnishings include several charming and elegant antiques, but everything else from appliances to furniture to the HD flat-screen TV are ALL NEW in 2013!

(Note: For more bedrooms, see our partner listing for nearby Vista Country Home, VRBO # 390177, just across the creek)

Tucked into a gentle hillside, the Little Round House offers a snug nest with full privacy from which to enjoy a magical countryside in the center of 100s of acres of pastoral beauty, in a permanently protected preservation easement, teeming with wildlife, surrounded by peaceful farmlands.

Features include extraordinary hand-crafted floors, walls, ceilings, doors and furnishings of elegant hardwoods and re-cycled chestnut beams from a 19th century barn.

With the Little Round House as your vacation base, you can EASILY DRIVE TO DOZENS OF HISTORIC SITES and some of the world's finest visitor's centers to experience history where it happened, and honor those who fought and died to make America the great nation it is today.

A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'

From here you have easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore.

After a day of sightseeing, GOLF, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at your Little Round House.

Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under your private gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming fields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the deluxe country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Hobbit Hideaway, enjoy a movie or documentary from a collection of Civil War DVDs on an HD TV, which also includes broadcast TV viewing options.

For a quieter evening, curl up next to the toasty Avalon stove with one of the many books of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.

Enjoy WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having!

Check the details and photos listed elsewhere on this website to find many more appealing features of the Little Round House.

And look for a link to the Little Round House’s neighbor across the creek, the 3-bedroom sister to the Little Round House, the elegant and spacious Vista Country Home.

We invite you to be our guest for an experience of comfort and learning that you will cherish and will want to share with close friends and family!

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

We were seeking a quiet place not too far from Gettysburg and found it in the Little Roundhouse. Beautiful setting and peaceful. Property is very well maintained and cabin is furnished with everything you need for a nice getaway. Thank you Chris for making such a unique place available. We plan on returning as soon as we can and highly recommend this rental property.

A Little Piece of Peace and Tranquillity

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I chose this location to celebrate our four year anniversary as a couple. First there are plenty of things to do as a couple in the town, which isn't too close to the property or too far away just far enough for romantic seclusion and tranquility. The design and layout of the cabin is amazingly beautiful, simplistic and efficient. Just the cabin alone is a cozy conversation piece. There is a creek within walking distance and multiple trails on the property to explore with your partner. Adjacent to the cabin is a shegebo (shed/gazebo) equipped with an overhang chairs and a BBQ grill perfect for watching the sunset or enjoying a rainy day. I can go on and on about all of the great qualities of this property, but check it out yourself! If you want a cozy romantic get away for jus you and your special someone than look no further. The owners are amazing and are there to accomadate their hospitality is the icing on the cake :)

We got snowed in!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful weekend! Temperatures were very cold. Once our Little Round House got warmed up we were toasty all weekend. Saturday it snowed about six inches. We watched it come down all day By keeping bird feeder full we had great fun watching birds right outside the window.

The house was exquisite. Unique and well appointed. Perfect for two who want to get away for the privacy of a lovers retreat.

The perfect weekend

  • 5 of 5

Valentine's Day weekend got a little hectic when my boyfriend and I lost our original rental in the Catskills two days before we were supposed to leave. SO happy that we were able to find the Little Round House and Chris was more than accommodating to get our reservation confirmed and welcome us on such short notice. We came on a very cold weekend so didn't get to take advantage of the hiking trails around the house, but the location is beautiful and perfectly secluded. The house has everything you need if you want to stay in and cook but also very close to both Westminster & Gettysburg if you want to get out of the house for a night. We highly recommend the Dobbin House in Gettysburg for a great meal in a historic setting. Also, I can't say enough about how comfortable the bed was- didn't want to leave! Thank you, Chris & Melissa for a wonderful weekend!!

Perfect Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The Little Round House is so quaint and very sweet. The property is remote and delightful for a getaway. We sipped wine by the fire pit and combed the trails! We also visited Gettysburg which is very, very close. The most wonderful treat was the delicious bed linens! So downy! We could not wait to go to bed and did not want to get out of the bed! Thank you Chris and Melissa!

Unbelievably Charming

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect place in every way. I had a girl's winter getaway and we just couldn't stop marveling at how quaint, cozy, and incredibly built The Little Round House was. So well furnished and clean. Chris and Melissa were extremely hospitable in every way! As college students, it's rare to get a truly relaxing weekend, and we were able to do so at The Little Round House. Not only is it such a gem inside, but it's also surrounded by beautiful land and hiking trails hiding you away from the city, and only 20 minutes from the heart of Gettysburg. I would recommend this place to anyone and hope to come back in the future! One of the best weekends ever. For real.
