UNIQUE, ROMANTIC HIDEAWAY FOR HOBBITS & HONEYMOONERS! NEAR GETTYSBURG

Thurmont Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Single BR Hideaway to enchant Hobbits or Honeymooners!

One bedroom with queen bed; one bathroom--Amazing place!

NEW in Spring 2013!

COUPLES SPECIAL! Each couple will be greeted with a fresh vase of lovely cut flowers, and a complimentary bottle of wine to help make your stay special, and memorable!

The newly rebuilt Little Round House showcases a highly creative, wagon-wheel-inspired design that incorporates magnificent antique, hand-hewn chestnut barn beams. It is an earth-sheltered, passive solar, cozy nest for a totally unique, romantic getaway--close to the earth, but total comfort!

Features include one roomy but very cozy, romantic bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining area adjacent to a living room area. All are bathed in natural light from huge windows and skylights, and heated by a beautiful full-flame Avalon Eden stove, and fully air conditioned for total comfort year round.

Furnishings include several charming and elegant antiques, but everything else from appliances to furniture to the HD flat-screen TV are ALL NEW in 2013!

(Note: For more bedrooms, see our partner listing for nearby Vista Country Home, VRBO # 390177, just across the creek)

Tucked into a gentle hillside, the Little Round House offers a snug nest with full privacy from which to enjoy a magical countryside in the center of 100s of acres of pastoral beauty, in a permanently protected preservation easement, teeming with wildlife, surrounded by peaceful farmlands.

Features include extraordinary hand-crafted floors, walls, ceilings, doors and furnishings of elegant hardwoods and re-cycled chestnut beams from a 19th century barn.

With the Little Round House as your vacation base, you can EASILY DRIVE TO DOZENS OF HISTORIC SITES and some of the world's finest visitor's centers to experience history where it happened, and honor those who fought and died to make America the great nation it is today.

A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'

From here you have easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore.

After a day of sightseeing, GOLF, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at your Little Round House.

Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under your private gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming fields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the deluxe country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Hobbit Hideaway, enjoy a movie or documentary from a collection of Civil War DVDs on an HD TV, which also includes broadcast TV viewing options.

For a quieter evening, curl up next to the toasty Avalon stove with one of the many books of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.

Enjoy WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having!

Check the details and photos listed elsewhere on this website to find many more appealing features of the Little Round House.

And look for a link to the Little Round House’s neighbor across the creek, the 3-bedroom sister to the Little Round House, the elegant and spacious Vista Country Home.

We invite you to be our guest for an experience of comfort and learning that you will cherish and will want to share with close friends and family!

The Little Round House was designed and built by Chris Batten, one of Maryland's finest Registered Landscape Architects, on beautiful farmland that has been home and lovingly cared for by his family for 6 generations. He also designed and landscaped the gorgeous and highly rated Vista Country Home, a second vacation rental on the same 100-acre property across the creek, and numerous parks, developments, and residential properties in the area during a 30+ year career in Maryland.

Chris Batten purchased this cottage in 2013

The Little Round House offers a unique experience of romance, privacy, and natural surroudings in a really cool little house you'd expect to see inhabited by hobbits! While private, it is close to towns with all the modern conveniences--restauants, supermarkets, drug stores, pubs... and it is a short drive to some of America's most important historic sites, including Gettysburg, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Antietam, and more. It also offers recreation from great golf courses, wineries, and even a paint ball park for yougsters of all ages!

AN SMAZING ESCAPE

  • 5 of 5
We only had a brief weekend yet wanted (and needed) a break. As We pulled up to the little round house a smile appeared on my face that did not fade. The attention to detail from the workmanship of the house to every amenity you could need made is comfortable and relaxed--time became our friend as we sat on the porch or watched the birds out the kitchen window We sincerely did not want to leave this surprising center of relaxation!

AMAZING IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

  • 5 of 5
It's tough to come up with things to say that are just not redundant to what's already been said about the Little Round House...but here goes nothing.

The property is amazing. We trekked around and enjoyed walking by the running rivers that went through the property. The Little Round House is secluded up on the left side of the property, and you really feel like you’re there all alone. The home itself was absolutely lovely!!! And the landscaping was to die for. It was amazing to look up to the sky at night and see how bright the stars were without any light pollution nearby. The Appalachian Trial was just a short drive away, so if you can convince yourself to leave the LRH I would recommend making a trip out there. (Chris can you give you great directions.)

Chris and Melissa were absolutely wonderful. I cannot rave about them enough!! We spent one night in their gazebo enjoying crackers and cheese and Melissa’s terrific cosmos. They were both great company and great hosts. Chris also had the fire pit all set up and ready to be used as soon as we arrived.

Our weekend at the Little Round House was absolutely perfect. I cannot recommend it enough. The bottom line is...we're already looking forward to coming back again.

CHARMING RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
We have stayed at many vrbo's and we found Chris and Melissa the best hosts we've encountered. The whole booking and payment process online was easy and quick. They welcomed us with fresh cut flowers and wine and a nice orientation of the house and property. Chris is the man who built this amazing house, so it was a interesting bonus to be able to talk with the person responsible for its design. They provided us with directions, tips on local walks and eating spots. Chris and Melissa both were friendly and interesting to talk with, and at the same time sensitive to people's wish to enjoy the privacy the location offers. They are a lovely couple- people you would be happy to sit down and have a cup of tea with.
The house itself is beautiful in it's design and simple, just right decorating inside. The focal point is the view outside of the splendid property. We had the best night's sleep ever due to the quiet and dark the property affords, as well as the comfortable, soft bedding you sink into and don't want to leave. It's a great area for history and hiking excursions, but we enjoyed most of our time staying on the property, as there is plenty of walking to do, and nature and quiet to enjoy right on the property itself. We spent a long afternoon sitting down by the stream.
We visited at the end of winter and are looking forward to going back in the spring or summer to enjoy the garden and wildlife. If you are looking for an easy, quiet, slow paced vacation with cozy accommodations in a beautiful setting, this is your place. We have not even the smallest complaint.

Owner's Response: Thanks so very much Suzanne for your complimentary review. One of our biggest benefits is getting to meet and serve our guests - most of whom we could easily get to know as good friends.
Again I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you might return sometime. Remind us that you are a repeat visitor and we will give a 10% discount.

ROUND HOUSE REVIEW

  • 5 of 5
This property is absolutely amazing. The scenery, peacefulness and overall functionality of the round house makes it a complete package. I recommend this property for all types of getaways. The owners are fantastic to work with and maintain the house/landscaping like a first class establishment. The house is close in proximity to a town with shopping needs and a short drive away from historic Gettysburg.

EXCELLENT RENTAL HOME!

  • 5 of 5
This rental was advertised 100% accurately. We met the owner, Chris, upon arrival and were welcomed with fresh flowers and a bottle of wine. Chris was very personable and helpful with anything that we needed. The home is beautiful, peaceful and totally secluded. We spent quite a bit of time exploring the property, sitting by the water and watching the wild life. Gettysburg is just 15 minutes away. We rented scooters from Gettypeds for the day and stopped at several wineries, farms and orchards along the way. In the evening we had a quiet dinner in the gazebo then sat by the fire. We watched a DVD from the owner's library and listened to Sirius radio. We sat outside in the morning with a cup of coffee and watched the birds, squirrels and groundhogs. This getaway was to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we really had a great time. We would highly recommend this rental and we hope to have an opportunity to come back.
