Around and about, what to see or do: Villa Collina is located in the Abruzzi hills near the village of Cellino Attanasio (5 mins drive), with bars, pizzeria/restaurant supermarkets, bank & chemist. Nearby is the historic & artistic town of Atri & countless other medieval hill-top villages, every one a treasure waiting to be discovered!
The Gran Sasso Mountain range, with the highest peak The Corno Grande, 2912m, is within an hour’s drive. Here there are 3 National Parks & numerous Nature Reserves (WWF) inhabited by many species of wildlife including bears, wolves, & eagles. Walking, rock climbing, fishing & pony trekking are just some of the many activities available here.
Ski Resorts, just 45 mins drive, have chair lifts & cable cars, tuition & full hire facilities.
The Adriatic Sea with miles of clean, sandy beaches is 20 mins from the Villa. Pineto, our nearest beach has pine trees growing on the beach offering cool shade for an after lunch siesta, is just one of the many small seaside resorts. This area is also famous for its delicious food and wonderful fruity wines - It's a gastronomic paradise!
There are countless places to visit in Abruzzo. Castles, Forts, numerous Churches & Religious Sanctuaries, as well as thousands of medieval hill top villages all offering fantastic views over the surrounding countryside of hills and mountain crags.
Teramo, just 1/2 hour drive away, is a bustling town with an old walled centre. Here you can see the remains of a Roman Theatre, visit the recently renovated Duomo, maybe take in some ballet at the city's Theatre and spend a day looking at the fascinating exhibits in the town Museum. Shopping is a must in Teramo with designer shops and a host of retail outlets in the nearby Gran Sasso Shopping Mall. Or you can explore local specialties at the rambling Saturday market which has every kind of stall and product including the traditional local cheeses and salami.
Atri, just 10 minutes from Villa Collina, is an ancient medieval hill-top town. Dominated by the Romanesque style Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, first consecrated in 1223, Adorning the walls and alter you will see the recently renovated 15th C. wall frescoes created by Andrea De Lito, who the critics consider as one of the most influential masters of the Renaissance style of southern and central Italy. His beautiful and ornate frescoes portray scenes taken from apocryphal gospels. A visit to the splendid two-story Cloister and attached Capitoline Museum that exhibits important religious finds and a superb collection of Castelli ceramics, is a must!
You may like to visit a vineyard in the locality. Our nearest 'Cantina' is Villa Medoro where the rows of vines carpet the hill sides. You can see how the wine is made and taste the lovely fruity Montepulciano Red and Trebbiano White wines.
