E Komo Mai (Welcome) to the Hilo oceanfront condo, Hale Honohonu. Everyone knows that every Hawaiian home (hale) has to have a name! 'Hono'( for calm) and honu'( for sea turtle) are Hawaiian words that perfectly describe what you will discover just steps from your vacation hale--wonderfully calm water and tame sea turtles. Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii. Although you won't find resort glitz and action here, we think you will like the fresh breeze off the ocean and an opportunity to explore Hilo at a leisurely pace.
Our condo is a corner, end unit which has a great view of the ocean and Keaukaha Beach Park/Carl Smith Beach park. On clear days, you can see Mauna Kea and smoke rising from the volcano in the distance. Carl Smith is the home of green sea turtles, very friendly creatures who often swim right up to visitors to say 'Aloha' (just remember that as visitors we respect their space and don't approach them, rather we wait for them to approach us). Our comfortably furnished lanai provides hours of viewing pleasure.
The sandy ocean lagoon is protected from the ocean waves by a natural reef. Spring water bubbles up from the lava formations. As a result, this is one of the Big Island's best snorkeling locations--sea turtles, wrasses and the humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish! Bring your own gear or use our fins and mask to explore this natural wonder. We have it on 'local' authority that the spring water has natural healing properties--believers or not, we always feel great after a swim! The park grounds are quite picturesque with brackish lagoons and open expanses of green grass--perfect for after swim lounging. Picnic ocean-side with our beach towels, chairs, and cooler.
Many visitors underestimate the size of the Big Island, and as a consequence, don't realize that Volcanoes National Park is well over 2 hours drive from Kailua Kona. However, the park is only 30 minutes from Hilo. There is so much to see and do on the East and South side of the island that is often missed in 'just a day trip' to Hilo. Waipio'o Valley, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Garden at Onomea Bay, Imiloa Planetarium, historic Hilo town, Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, Panaewa Zoo, Smithsonian connected Lyman Museum, Kapoho tidal pools(another outstanding snorkeling spot), and Mauna Kea observatories and visitors' center--are all close by.
After a full day of snorkeling or exploring the East and South side of the Big Island, settle into your comfortable king size bed and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep. Our condo is a two bedroom, one bathroom unit. Each bed has a 2013 Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress set.
For those meals you wish to enjoy in your hale, there is a fully equipped kitchen. The Hilo Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is a great place to get local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, breads, salsas--the list is endless. For your dining pleasure, Hilo has a great selection of restaurants for a town its size--one of the best seafood restaurants is right across the street!
It would be our pleasure to be your hosts for your Big Island vacation. I live in Hilo, and personally manage Hale Honohonu, and love to assist our guests in planning a great vacation!

I am Mozela Dundas. I live in Hilo and personally manage Hale Honohonu I and II. My Husband, Glenn, and I are originally from Texas. We adopted Hawaii as our home state in 2012.
Mozela Dundas purchased this condo in 2013
Hale Honohonu II is nestled in the lush surroundings of Carl Smith Park. This well-maintained beach park is home to calm waters (hono) and friendly sea turtles (honu). We swim and snorkel here often, and can't wait to share it with our guests.
Hilo is 'old-style' Hawaii--sleepy and local and our location epitomizes that spirit, that feeling. Hale Honohonu is perfect for guests who have a love of nature, a sense of adventure, and an aloha spirit. If you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, wave watching, reading, or taking it easy this is the place for you.
We were very happy at this condo in Hilo, and wished we could have extended our stay another day or two. The rooms were very clean and well stocked with everything we needed, and the location was great. My family loved snorkeling in the quiet (although chilly) waters of the next-door park. We saw plenty of sea turtles and fish! The location was very convenient for visiting Volcano, Mauna Kea, Akaka Falls, and downtown Hilo. The only thing we could have asked for was warmer weather, but that's certainly not the fault of the condo owner!
Good location near nice park in quiet area of Hilo, big turtles live here.
Good base for exploring. (need car to get downtown)
Clean, fresh, comfortable fixtures, fitting, furniture and linens.
Good supplies in kitchen, bathroom etc. Great Seaside Restaurant across the road.
Read the other 5* more detailed reviews and agree with them. Our average rating is compared to other properties that were excellent. We would stay here again if we stayed in Hilo in the future.
This is a great central location that was our base of operations for ranging up and down the east coast of Hawaii. We went to the volcano, Kapoho tide pools, Champagne pond, Waipi'o Valley, Akaka Falls, and many places in between. The unit was clean, spacious and well appointed, more than we needed for a family of 3. It is technically a first floor unit, but because of building design (for tsunami/inundation protection), you are really up at the 2.5 story level, which is fantastic for views and breezes! We loved the lanai, and spent many mornings and evenings out there, when we weren't out gallivanting around. Carlsmith Park next door, is beautiful and unique. The water is a bit chilly, but great for a quick dip on a hot day, and well protected from the ocean waves. We saw turtles and many fish. Our weather was also fantastic, with rain forecast on several occasions, but nothing more than overcast or a few sprinkles, and usually burned off by mid-morning.
This condo is set up efficiently inside, is immaculate, and has attentive owners. Being next door to a beautiful beachfront park with natural lagoon-like swimming areas that turtles can be seen daily is the best feature!
Lots to see and do on the Hilo side of Hawaii, so this is a perfect spot to do that from. We were two couples and found the kitchen small to work in, and without a BBQ, we didn't cook as much as we had planned to. That was the only drawback.
We loved our stay here. We weren't lucky enough to spot a sea turtle, but the apartment itself was ideal. Lots of room, everything was well kept, clean and new. We cooked, took day trips and came back to a great night's sleep for 3 nights we stayed here.
Short drive to Volcano (45 mins), day trip to Kona was doable (2 hr drive), and a short drive to downtown Hilo for great restaurants and shopping.
Thank you to our lovely host! I am sorry for not signing your guestbook (did not have a pen!)
Our two weeks spent in Hawaii were during the unseasonably warm days of 90 plus degrees with very little wind and rain on only two occasions. The residents mentioned how unusually hot it was and we agreed! How wonderful to walk out the back gate to the very cool and refreshing water and snorkel with the tropical fish and look for the turtles every day.
A great location, we visited waterfalls, the Hilo market and the awesome Botanical Garden along with a Helicopter ride over the volcanic activity. We used the cooler provided in the condo and took a lunch purchased at the market with us to Volcano National Park and had a picnic.
The condo was clean and decorated nicely. The mat in front of the door beckoned welcomingly each time we approached the condo. A safe location, everything required keyed entry. We ate breakfast on the lanai overlooking the beach park and enjoyed watching the locals arrive early so they could enjoy a day at the park on the weekends. The location of windows provided entry to what little wind there was and the ceiling fan and other fans throughout the condo made our stay comfortable. We wish we could have stayed longer here in Hilo.
