About Randi Bakken

Although we have lived here for 2 years, coming home still feels like being on vacation! We look forward to sharing our cottage with you.

Randi Bakken purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Randi Bakken chose Novato

After living in suburban neighborhoods our whole lives, we never realized how amazing an undisturbed view into nature really is. One look out the window had us convinced we couldn't be anywhere else!

What makes this cottage unique

The Boathouse has a definite away-from-it-all, country feel - but is still just a few minutes from downtown Novato, Safeway, Target, and Costco.

Quite perfect exerience at the Boathouse

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent 10 lovely days at the Boathouse. The setting is restful, and it was very convienient to the places we wanted to go. It is very well appointed, the comfort added quite a bit to our experience because we were quite busy with family activities. It will be our destination for many future visits. Randi and Jim were completely welcoming and gracious.

Convenient Location On The Petaluma River

  • 5 of 5
My teenage son and I stayed at the cottage for a week in August. This a very convenient location if you want to explore Marin county, Napa and Sonoma Valleys, Point Reyes and occasional trip to SF. The Larkspur ferry is an easy way to get to SF if you don't need a car to explore the city. If you do plan to drive to SF often, a closer location or staying in SF will be more convenient. The cottage is great for a couple or a small family. Both the main bed and the sleeper couch are comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipt and has plenty of space for dining. Nice view over the marsh towards the river. The owners are very friendly and helpful but give plenty of privacy. The cottage is very clean. As somebody already has mentioned, the stairs might be a challenge for people with limited mobility or elderly. Several supermarkets within a couple of miles from the cottage and plenty of restaurants. We'll be back!

Can't wait to go back!

Can't wait to go back!

We spent a lovely week at this super clean, comforting cottage while our daughter competed in a horse show nearby. It was everything we needed -- and more! The large bed was very comfortable for my 6'2" husband and me, and the sofa bed worked great for my teen-aged daughter. The kitchen was fully stocked with a lovely view of the Petaluma River and hills beyond. We spent every evening on the big front deck with a glass of wine while we barbecued dinner on the nice propane grill. The sunrises through the kitchen window were also spectacular while we enjoyed early morning coffee.

The location is very convenient for the Napa/Sonoma wine country, San Francisco, West Marin, and the East Bay. Downtown Novato and Petaluma, with their many restaurants, are a short drive, as are multiple hiking trails.

Finally, our hosts, Randi and Jim, were just wonderful ... friendly and helpful when we needed suggestions for hiking trails and forgot our key one day, but never intrusive. We look forward to returning soon and would never again opt for a hotel over this great get-away place!

Only 30 Minutes From SF And Yet Off The Beaten Path...

  • 5 of 5
This is a fabulous choice if, like me, you dislike the congestion and prices of the city. This rental is a very comfortable bungalow with a full kitchen and a large private deck. The deck is equipped with propane BBQ, lounge chairs, and table. My wife, and daughter and I spent several afternoons just playing board games, and enjoying the view at the table outside.

It is located right on the edge of a marsh area with a view of the waterway. The area is full of birds particularly swallows. So, if you are anything of a birder; bring your binoculars and camera.

Importantly, we found the property to be very clean. The bed is extremely comfortable and the shower has all the hot water you will need.

We found the owners to be courteous and helpful. For the price, I don't think this quaint accommodation can be beat. For full disclosure, there is a set of steps that could be a challenge for someone that would have a problem climbing a couple flights of stairs. And, it is a quarter mile from a bridge that has some traffic noise. But, it is far quieter than being almost anywhere in the city.

Best place ever...

  • 5 of 5
We (family with 4 month daughter from germany) stayed 3 weeks and had a perfect vacation. The location is just ideal for family-vacation. Its a really quiet place to stay just at the waterfront of the Petaluma River. Marin county is full of small really nice little towns(Novato, Mill Valley, San Rafael,...) great to chill out and goin out for coffee or dinner. There are tons of other things to do with great hikes, even better MTB trails, awesome beaches and the winecounty just close by. Going to the city(SF) by ferry is just the best.We enjoyed so much havin a glass of wine on the deck of our Cottage after a busy day in the streets of San Francisco. The Cottage got everything you need and is really well equipped, especially the kitchen. It is in great shape and super clean. We loved it. Jim and Randi were perfect hosts and helped whereever we asked for.Thanx for everything!

Great guest cottage on the river in Novato, CA, outside of San Francisco

  • 5 of 5
In March I was able to leave New England for some wonderful California weather. I didn't have the money to spend on a hotel in San Francisco, and plus I wanted something a bit more relaxing than an urban stay. I found this guest cottage to be perfect for my needs -- affordable, close to all sorts of adventures, and a beautiful setting on marshes surrounding a long dock to the river. Which isn't to ignore the guest cottage itself -- immaculately clean, great propane fireplace, comfy bed, fully equipped kitchen. I loved to make a pot of coffee in the mornings and sit on the deck planning an outing for the day. I took a ferry into San Francisco (an easy 15 minute drive to the ferry station), enjoyed tours at a few local wineries in Sonoma, hit some cute shops in downtown Novato, and took great hikes in the hills overlooking the ocean. I highly recommend this cottage -- it's a great find, and I definitely would return there.
