Welcome to our slice of paradise. We currently live in the Pacific Northwest, with our cat Scout. We feel blessed to have such a special place, and we are pleased to be able to share its magic with you.

We have backpacked and hiked throughout the southwest, and love this location for its rich scenary, numerous recreational opportunities and abundant sunshine. The simplicity of this house allows it to fit within the landscape without competing with it. We return from visits to this house renewed and touched by this beautiful country and wish that for each of you as well.

The property is close enough to Kanab to allow easy dining and shopping, but far enough outside the City to provide privacy and quiet. You very well may find yourself torn between the desire to relax in the chairs outside enjoying the peaceful setting, the draw of nearby spectacular national and state parks, or a visit with the wonderful people and furry beneficiaries at Best Friends Animal Society.

WONDERFUL IN MAY!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I were in the Zen House for 7 nights/days. The house and property was everything we dreamed - serene, peaceful, warm/cozy. We hiked in several locations (Zion, Big Water) hung out with friends at The Doghouse Tavern in town, made dinners together, watched a movie and had a fabulous time. Thank you for providing us with a great retreat to rejuvenate! We're sure to be back!

ONLY THE SOUND OF THE WIND...

  • 5 of 5
Having rented homes across the US and around the world, we greatly appreciate an owner who takes an active interest in the property. The location is perfect for exploring Zion and Bryce. It is just outside Kanab where you can get groceries or eat at restaurant. But, far enough out to have the serenity you are looking for. Everything accurate as described in the property description. We particularly liked the WiFi at the house which uses a wireless WAN through Verizon's 4G/LTE. It was speedy enough for us to stream a few movies on Netflix. And, as far as the dull kitchen knives we have encountered in the past I award the Red Rock, "the sharpest knife award". I don't think you can go wrong with this property.

AMAZING

  • 5 of 5
Wow. I don't think the pictures of this place do it any justice to the beauty once you're standing in it. What an amazing house and an amazing week spent there. The house itself, being passive solar, is so unique and inviting. You can't help but instantly feel at home. Fully equipped with everything you'd need to feel like you're on a vacation but still in the comforts of your own house. We can't wait to go back. And we will. As active volunteers at Best Friends we spent most of our days at the sanctuary but came home to the relaxing red rock retreat to do exactly that, relax. The dogs had a wonderful time enjoying the spacious back yard and watching the jack rabbits. A beautiful view from every angle of this house. A must stay for anyone traveling through Kanab.

Owner's Response: Sara: thank you so much for taking the time to post a review, and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We are in Kanab at the moment, basking in the sun and feeling the tension from our jobs recede as the quiet, the beauty, and the dimensions of the cliffs and the wide open west place our issues into perspective. There definitely is a special feeling you get in this house, and we are glad that until we retire, others are able to share the experience. Please do come back! Leslee and Dave

THE BEST THANKSGIVING EVER!

  • 5 of 5
Having spent many long hours on the road traveling from Phoenix, we arrived at the house at 5:30, just as the sun was going down. We are both artists and once owned an interior renovation company. From floor to ceiling, wall to wall, the quality craftsmanship and unexpected architectural features throughout the house really impressed us. What a nice treat.
When we first got inside, we were amazed at how warm the house was, given that it was 32 degrees when we arrived, but we still turned on the fireplace - just because :). It was after 11 when we finally got to bed despite the next days early start. After our usual Thanksgiving breakfast of home-made tamales and eggs, we put the turkey in for a day of slow-roasting, and had a wonderful meal. Over the next few days, we took some time to roam the property and take pictures, and discovered that the arroyo which surrounds the house was home to myriad birds, rabbits, mule deer, and the occasional neighborhood dog. We enjoyed seeing all the feeders in the trees. Little Dorrit, our Corgi/Terrier, had a great time too. Her nose never stopped twitching all the time we were there. Our days were filled with trips to Best Friends, Zion NP, and the occasional stroll through town, while our nights were back at the house playing cards, watching old movies, and eating.
Lots of your neighbors had their Christmas lights up and that made Dorrit's walks much more enjoyable. That reminds me..the Saturday after Thanksgiving we went down to Escobar's because we had had our fill of turkey and cranberry sauce. Though they were were closed, the evening wasn't a total loss because we were just in time for the Annual Christmas Parade of Lights. OMG! What a hoot! Home-spun? Yes. Rinky-dink? Absolutely. But the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade ain't got nuthin' on Kanab's home-made floats and small-town entertainment.
We really love Kanab, and always hate to leave, but this time, it was your beautiful home that really made it hard for us to go. If our stay had been any longer than 4 days, leaving would have been unbearable and your housekeeper would have found us sobbing in the driveway.
Thank you both for allowing us to share your home and your incredible hospitality. We know you love the house but, please stay away next year as well, so we can have another wonderful Kanab Thanksgiving.

WOW! WHEN CAN I GO BACK?

  • 5 of 5
I stayed at the Red Cliff Retreat for 3+ weeks and all I keep thinking is "Wow! When can I go back?" The house was very comfortable and set up great for me and my dogs. It was so nice to stay outside of town in such a picturesque location. I truly enjoyed the "dark skies" at night. There are a lot more stars visible than we can see from home. It was a perfect base location for volunteering at Best Friends Animal Society. We had great weather, if a little chilly. Having the blinds open to heat the floor in the dining room and the trombe wall in the bathroom mostly kept the house warm enough, but I was glad to have the stove heater as a backup to knock the chill off on the really cold days. The dogs loved the yard. Since I have periodic fence jumpers, I was worried a little about the height of the fence, but no problems. With the nice weather, I let the dogs wander in and out at will while I was "at home" and the laundry room was a nice place to crate them when I was out. I found the counter heights to be a little awkward; however, after bending over to do dishes one day at Best Friends, I could appreciate that I didn't need to bend over "at home". It just took a little bit of adjustment. The bed was great and the bedding was cozy. This is a wonderful, comfortable "home away from home" and I hope we'll be able to visit again soon. Thanks for letting us stay with you!

PERFECT LOCATION IN THE RED ROCKS

  • 5 of 5
This 'retreat home' hidden in the red rocks was so peaceful and comfortable and served as our base for hiking adventures in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, and Lake Powell area. We visited Best Friends several days where we also hiked down to the hidden lake adjacent to their property. I spent mornings before our hikes lounging out front in the deck chair sipping my coffee and enjoying the view of the valley into Arizona. We prepared most of our meals in the kitchen and relaxed at home most evenings. Our daughter enjoyed watching Netflix shows on TV. There are also a library of books to read. The stars are incredible in the darkness of the night. We were able to use the large cooler for our lunches and the backpack for our hikes that the owners provided on-site. We dined out for supper one night at the Rocking V and several breakfasts out at Houston's Trail End and Parry Lodge. We found the horse trail in the back of the house which led into the red rocks and an overlook into the valley. One of my husband's favorite was going to the Monday night western movie at the Crescent Moon Theater in Kanab and meeting the owners and 'old-timer's' who showed up. I would love to return to this place again! Thank you to the owners for sharing this retreat home with our family from Minnesota. We were really blessed!

Notes:
We love the desert climate (warm days & cool nights) and the passive solar engineering in this house. In summer, we and most of our guests find that opening the many windows at night, using the ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room, and closing the windows and blinds during the day during the hottest months keeps the house comfortable. However, some people prefer air conditioning, which this house does not have, so please plan accordingly. Also note that due to rural setting, cell coverage varies by carrier....we now have a Verizon booster that provides excellent reception for Verizon customers and that may work with other carriers as well.
