Pastoral, peaceful and serene escape in the Mount Newton Valley

  • 5 of 5
My 10-year old daughter and I spent three lovely summer weeks in the Sunrise Suite at Heathwood. The suite has one large master bedroom with a king-size bed, comfy couch and a big picture window looking out onto the patio, through the pasture and down the valley...so wonderful to wake up to every morning! The second bedroom has two twin beds, a chair and a smaller window. All beds were extremely comfortable and had the most luxurious linens.

There is a full, well-stocked kitchen which connects to a small eating area and living room. Our favourite part of the suite was the sunny patio where we ate almost every breakfast and dinner. There is a terrific new BBQ along with a large umbrella and very comfortable patio furniture.

My daughter fell in love with Jacqui and Ollie's dogs and spent hours playing with them in the large yard. She also go a kick out of feeding the horses and donkeys apples from the tree. There is a fence which will keep the dogs out of the yard if guests are not wanting them to come and visit, but we thoroughly enjoyed their company!

The location of Heathwood is quite unique. To me, the beautiful Mount Newton Valley area felt very much like Saltspring Island and sometimes it was hard to believe we were only 25 minutes from downtown Victoria. There are many organic farms and vineyards in the area as well as beaches and parks loaded with trees & hiking trails.

There was no shortage of things to do within a 5-10 minute drive. The Peninsula Country Market (local produce, etc.) takes place every Saturday from May until October; the village of Saanichton has most services you could need including a Thrifty's & Shoppers Drug Mart; there are two public golf courses within 5 minutes (Ardmore and Glen Meadows), as well as the beautiful Cordova Bay golf course (18 holes plus a terrific par 3 course) about 10 minutes up the highway. We had an amazing time at the new Panorama Recreation Centre, where there is a lap pool with rope swing, climbing wall and diving boards, a very warm kids pool with a fun lazy river and waterslide as well as a huge hot tub. We discovered a few great beaches, but the closest one is Coles Beach just 4 minutes away. The airport is a 10 minute drive as is Sidney and Brentwood Bay.

There is so much more I could tell you about how lovely and convenient the Sunrise Suite is but you're just going to have to experience it for yourself. Jacqui and Ollie are fantastic hosts and will help you out with anything you need. Enjoy!

FABULOUS place to stay in Victoria BC

  • 5 of 5
Heathwood is an extremely amazing place to stay. The owners have thought of every little detail for one's comfort. We spent our honeymoon in the Sunrise Suite. AWESOME! The suite is beautifully decorated and has everything you need. It has a private patio with an amazing view. We had breakfast on the patio each morning and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, where we could watch the horses in a nearby field, dragonflies and hummingbirds flit by in abundance, and the occasional rabbit came to visit us. It was the most relaxing time ever spent. The owners are a delightful couple, and so thoughtful - they had glasses chilling and a bottle of champagne waiting for us upon our arrival. It was a very special place to spend our honeymoon, and we plan to return for a future anniversary. Lovely, lovely, lovely place!

Could not have chosen a better place

  • 5 of 5
After a hectic 10 days touring the Rockies we wanted to find a place to relax and recover on Vancouver Island.

Our choice was based on the other excellent reviews so our expectations were high. We were not disappointed. We could not have chosen a more peaceful and tranquil place.
The standard of the accommodation is first class, spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and furnished. In reality it is even better than the pictures. The kitchen had every facility and our welcome pack was gratefully received after a long days travel. The outdoor facilities invite you to relax and enjoy the distant views, and on Saturdays, the Butchart Garden fireworks.

Jacqueline and Ollie are the most delightful of hosts. They do everything they can to make your stay the best of experiences. We also soon had some new friends in their dogs, Cody, Pippin, Misty and the lovely Little Lucy. It was also a delight to see their horses, Dickens, Vitaly and Sher enjoying the open fields.

Having eaten in restaurants for ten days, we wanted to make best use of our self catering facility. Jacqueline suggested that we visit the local Saturday Farmers Market to buy some fresh produce. We had a great morning shopping for fresh local fruit and vegetables as well as fish and seafood. The spot prawns were particularly delicious. Against a background of live music we enjoyed talking to the stallholders, all of whom were very welcoming. We also made use of the two well stocked local supermarkets.

We were situated very conveniently for Butchart Gardens as well as the pretty town of Sidney. Our journeys to Victoria were straightforward but try to avoid the late afternoon commuter traffic on your return.

Just writing this review had brought back happy memories of our week at the Sunrise Suite at Heathwood. Hopefully, we will return to Vancouver Island one day and would not think of staying anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Garden of Eden

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in this tranquil little haven for five days. Would that we could have stayed 5 more! The property is so beautiful and peaceful that you don't want to leave. The cottage has all that you will need for a comfortable stay. Our charming hosts even left us some local organic eggs and bread in the fridge in case we arrived starving. Though you are close to everything, you feel like you are away from it all. Very nearby are farms and wineries - in the quaint town of Sidney-by-the-sea, all manner of shops, bakeries and restaurants. Don't miss the stunning Butchart Gardens a few minutes away! For the foodie, make a bee-line to the gastro-brew pub Spinnakers or the wonderful Zambri's in downtown Victoria. All in all, one of our best trips. We look forward to visiting the lovely Heathwood cottage again sometime soon!

Loved the Sunrise Suite, and the hosts!

  • 5 of 5
The Sunrise Suite is a wonderful place to stay when visiting Butchart Gardens, if you're looking for a place of serenity, comfort, and fellowship. It's close enough to some small towns to have decent dining options (5 minutes or so). Go a little farther (up to 15 minutes) and there's a very good selection. But we don't come to Heathwood to be within walking distance of fine dining. We go there because the people are fantastic, their property is almost as pretty as a piece of Butchart Gardens, and it is very peaceful.
Sunrise Suite is larger than some apartments. You approach up the lawn and to your own private door. There are two separate bedrooms and one shared bath, a small laundry (perfectly large enough for our purposes), a living room with a view of the pasture and hills, and a cozy kitchen. Everything is as clean as can be, and if you have any problem at all, Jacqui and Ollie are wonderful about taking care of things.
It is, at most, a 10 minute drive to Butchart Gardens. Less if you don't have to stop for any traffic. And traffic out there is minimal. If going to Victoria, it's very straight-forward and no more than 40 minutes at rush hour. At least, that's what we encountered. Less, more like 25-30, outside of the relatively-heavy traffic. If you're used to a larger city like Seattle, even the rush hour traffic in Victoria is very light. Sidney is a cute town and just a few minutes north. Really, Sunrise Suite is very centrally located if you're exploring the Saanich Peninsula.
We wouldn't hesitate to stay here with our next visit.

Large, beautiful, quiet suite.

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I rented the Sunrise Suite at Heathwood for the weekend of our wedding, Oct 4-7, 2013. The suite is quite large, so it worked well to for my bridesmaids and I to get ready for the wedding, which included hair and makeup for 6 people. The property is so beautiful so we were able to take some wonderful photos of our dresses etc with the scenery. We also did a reveal photo shoot where my husband and I saw each other for the first time and the property offered a lovely backdrop. Jacqui and Ollie were extremely accommodating and very helpful for us. The suite is beautiful and the bedroom is very spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. We would definitely recommend this suite for anyone as it can be very functional for a quiet weekend away or used in a similar way as we did.

Thank you for taking the time to write this very complimentary review,
especially as we know you have just returned from your Honeymoon.
Ollie and I are very grateful that the Sunrise Suite was all you wished it to be, and that the grounds of Heathwood helped to make your very special day a success.
The weather was wonderful, and although it was a fall day in October
you had a lovely warm and sunny day for your many photographs .
Ollie joins me in wishing you both a very happy, fun filled future together.
Very Best Wishes to both of you,
