After more than ten years working in the travel industry and traveling all over the world, staying in many types of accommodations - this property has to be one of the coolest, funkiest, most fun places we have stayed. We absolutely LOVED IT!!
Congratulations Bob on creating a fabulous eclectic environment. My four year old son just asked if we could stay here forever.

Your Host 'Bob' has worked a decade overseas assisting people in nations ravaged by wars to rebuild their lives and nation. During the time overseas 'Bob' was called the 'movie man' not because he knew much about movies but because Bob would share a movie with everyone: Sharing a move led to sharing popcorn and sometimes teaching people of other nations how to make popcorn in a theater popcorn machine: Bob left many popcorn machines around the world and many friendly popcorn lovers. During those 10 years, Bob had little time to visit the wonderful home and retreat he wants to share with you. For Bob, relaxation was no longer than 21 days home at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - 'Music Cave of Refuge' and making Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua a special place of refuge to relax, reflect and share. Darlene our co-host would put back in order the projects Bob did not finish. Darlene lived during my long time overseas at my home in the downstairs living area: I am happy to say Darlene still lives in the downstairs unit of the home and can be your best guide to the islands or she can be invisible: Your Choice. Darlene managed a Hostel for more than 3 years that specialized in eco-tourism and hiking (a favorite stop for world travelers). Darlene has been an island resident for 26 years. Now that Darlene is retired it is wonderful to have her around as a friend and resource. I encourage you to consider the advantages of a home with such a great friend and resource: We hope you can relax as we do at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - with our Hawaii and World knowledge - We truly believe there is no finer place in Hawaii or the World.
Aloha and Mahalo from Darlene and Bob!
Bob purchased this house in 2004
The area and home have some of the cleanest air in the World. Home location is approximately 1 mile from a weather point used as a baseline reference for World clean air data. There is sunshine almost every day usually when it rains during the day (not very common) the sun will always return. It is very common for late night and early morning showers allowing for a lush green environment during the very sunny days and it makes for very moderate temperatures never (almost never) temperatures exceeding the 80's. With the mild but steady winds, humidity is generally not an issue. The home offers Seclusion, Seclusion, Seclusion with beautiful surrounding areas. Just outside your doorstep are wonderful walking areas and scenic roads: When you return home the home environment and outstanding entertainment option offer almost a vacation in a vacation.
View the steam rising from the lava ocean entry and from the front lot view the lava flowing down the mountainside when surface lava is present. SECLUSION! CHANGING VISTA VIEWS! MORNING AND EVENING WALKS! Almost no one knows anyone lives here! Two isolated uncrowded beaches one a 5 minute walk and the other a 15 minute walk. Must be one of the best kept secrets and places on the globe.
We spent three great weeks here! Bob was really responsive as we were making our arrangements, providing lots of helpful information, and detailed directions and maps for driving. It really helps to get here before dark, as the road into the property is easy to miss. Darlene, the housekeeper, was a treasure of information and was so helpful and friendly. She provided fresh flowers throughout our stay, and kept the coffee supply full - so nice. Once here, it was like being at home - only much cooler. Everything was clean, the rooms were spacious. The tropical motif throughout, the jukebox with thousands of great songs, the popcorn maker, the video projectors, wow. The kitchen has everything you want (except for a blender - we went out and bought a small one, to make our daily smoothies). A few steps away is the lava flow - we loved walking on it at different times of the day. And a short walk down the road are the Wednesday and Saturday markets at Uncle Robert's. Interesting people watching, and not to be missed. A beautiful drive on a roller coaster road up the coast brings you to several good day spots, where we spent many days relaxing, reading, swimming, and snorkelling. You're a short drive to quirky Pahoa and the Maku'u Sunday market. And you're in a good place for exploring the eastern side of the island as well, as we did day trips to Volcano, Hilo, and Mauna Kea. All in all, a very good experience. Thank you for the memories.
We really enjoyed our stay, there were a lot of things to do and see this side of the Island is not as touristy. The seven days on this side were just as enjoyable as Kona side before this. House is in a location were you can have some privacy. Our family really enjoyed being able to kick back and watch the big screen in the evenings with some popcorn, after a busy day of exploring. The juke box was a hit in the mornings has all kinds of songs. There is a very well equipped kitchen my daughter made Ice cream a few times it was awesome. We will definitely would consider a visit in the future if we go to the Big Island again. Would of liked to explore the area right out the front door on the lava flow's a little more if we would of made time. You must drive down 137 from the house the canopy from the jungle covers the two lane road, one of the most scenic drives we had, also saw some dolphins on this drive. Would of been awesome to to be at the lava's edge and sat watching the surf crash with a sunset or rise. We had a pretty good tropical storm our last night there and were packing with candles and flashlights, Tree's down on the road and everything, The house is well sheltered and you could see the palms swaying aggressively, Darlene was lots of help anytime asked, she offered candles during the power outage. Thank You Darlene for being there when we needed you!
My wife and I only stayed for a night before a flight out of Hilo the next morning but what a great evening we had. Wish we would have spent more time there (spent a little more time at Volcano winery than we had planned :). The house was clean, the beds great, and the entertainment systems throughout the house were amazing. All of the memorabilia and décor throughout the house just added to our enjoyment. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of our stay was the proximity of an old lava flow, basically out the front door just across the street. Maybe a 10 minute walk brings you to the ocean and beautiful views. Also a couple of black sand beaches. Could have explored the lava for hours. The terrain is rough as is expected but pretty easy to walk on. Darlene was great to work with and very accommodating
I can not say enough about how great our stay was. The minute we drove up, it is somewhat difficult to find in the dark, I felt at home. The beds were so comfortable. We rocked out to the juke box almost every night. The house was incredibly clean. Darlene, the caretaker, is a wealth of island information and makes you feel like you have been friends forever. If you are looking for a quit secluded place to stay, you won't be disappointed.
My husband and I have been to Hawaii many times but never The Big Island. I looked at many places but was continually drawn to The Music Cave Of Refuge because of its proximity to the lava. It's literally steps away and every walk you take is different. (bring water/hiking shoes) It is indescribably beautiful and thought provoking. I miss the crackle under my feet and seeing something different every time. The cliffs are gorgeous.
The caretaker, Darlene is very knowledgeable about the flow since she experienced it first hand. She is there when you need her but is never obtrusive. She went out of her way for us many times and is the salt of the earth. She is genuine, fun and eager to help. I can't say enough nice things about her.
There were fresh flowers upon arrival which was a nice touch. The house is very clean, comfortable and well equipped. If you're a foodie, this kitchen is the place for you. There were lots of gadgets and three coffee makers which was my only concern! It was fun eating while jammin' to the juke box.
Even though you don't go to Hawaii to watch TV, you MUST watch some movies and especially the 3D ones. (Don't forget to turn the glasses on!) What a treat to have a movie screen in your living room.
The area is really lush and beautiful. We took lovely drives and hit the Kopoho tide pools twice. Again, bring good shoes and snorkel gear.
I highly recommend a visit to Volcanoes National Park. When you get back to the Music Cave Of Refuge, you will be even more in awe of the beautiful lava right in front of you and the wonders of our planet and volcanoes in particular. I was moved in such a way from this experience that finding words to explain it sells the experience short so I won't try.
Lastly I'd like to say something about bang for your buck. When you have this much square footage, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, a beautiful kitchen, a juke box and movie screens you just can't beat the price for this home. My husband and I would love to return and hopefully we'll make that happen.
I was on a girls getaway. Our objective was to spend a few days on each side of the island. The rental turned out to be an amazing destination. We particularly enjoyed the local night market, and walking on the lava fields in front of the rental. The amenities in the place were incredible. On a rainy evening we listened to the incredible jukebox, watched Avatar in 3-D and made popcorn using the movie popcorn maker. What a treat! Darlene is a friendly, helpful and attentive hostess. We also lucky to meet Bob, the owner, who furnished and decorated this fascinating place. He also made helpful itinerary suggestions.
Beds are extremely comfortable. The rental exceeded my expectations. I would definitely recommend to a friend.
