Many visitors enjoy touring the resort and the island by golf cart and bikes, both of which are available for rental, as well as simply taking nice long walks.

Most visitors also take time to get to know the rest of this special island. Those who do quickly realize that they have discovered a hidden island gem just a short boat ride from the mainland. Quiet, laid-back, and unique, beautiful Daufuskie is described by old-timers as similar to Hilton Head before a bridge connected that island with the mainland.

When you choose this cottage for your vacation, you will have the opportunity to experience a lovely low country island with a centuries-old cultural history, beautiful beaches, spectacular wildlife, and friendly residents.

* The Melrose on the Beach pools are not open year-round, and the dates of the pool season are determined solely by the resort management.

About Deborah Smith

The owners, who fell in love with Daufuskie Island almost 10 years ago, live in Grove City, Pennsylvania.

This vacation home is managed by Daufuskie Rental Group, all of whom enjoy sharing their island with visitors. Deborah Smith, Director of Client Services, is available for help with reservations, getting to the island, on-island logistics, cart rentals, and activities.

Deborah Smith purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Deborah Smith chose Daufuskie Island

Just as Daufuskie is a special place, so is the Melrose area of the island. One of the original eleven plantations on Daufuskie, Melrose was famous for its Sea Island cotton and thriving social life in the 1800’s. The former plantation bears the name of a Scottish rose brought to the island by Captain Mongin. The main house, known as the Melrose Mansion, was surrounded by lavish rose gardens and looked out at the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful white sand beaches.

Today, Melrose encompasses over 700 acres and you’ll share those same white sand beaches with nesting Bald Eagles, Loggerhead Turtles and dolphin. Melrose is also home to a resort with amenities that include the Jack Nicklaus Signature Melrose course, the Melrose on the Beach Restaurant, top level pool/hot tub facility, and the Island House conference center.

Perfect Getaway From the Real World

  • 5 of 5

My wife, my parents and our 2 dogs had a very peaceful long weekend stay on Daufuskie. It was our first time to Daufuskie and we didn't want to leave. The cottage was even more than we expected, 2 big bedrooms, nice updated kitchen, perfectly laid out living room/eating area and a relaxing screen porch. The beach is under 100 yards from the front door. The beach was the complete opposite of the normal NC/SC beaches, it was NOT crowded!

As others have said, Deb at Daufuskie Properties was great. Before we arrived she emailed us a packet of suggestions and tips about the island and the property. It was so helpful, she suggested May River as a ferry service, and the were great. Deb meet us at the cottage when we arrived and give us alittle more information about things to do. She was also around all weekend if we needed anything. Take the golf cart and take a drive around the entire island, you will never want to leave.

On the boat ride back, my wife and mom were asking my dad and I when we could back and our answer was soon..very soon. My only problem was next time I come, I might not leave.

A little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Daufuskie Island, A private little secret a half mile away from Hilton Head. To access the secluded island, you must arrive by boat. Ferry's and private water taxis are available from Savannah Georgia, Bluffton, SC and Hilton Head Island. My husband spotted the island by mistake, we read some reviews and we booked a visit. Needless to say, we loved it. The island is relaxing, peaceful and home away from it all! If you enjoy private beaches, seconds away from your cottage, this place is for you. The cottages are warm and inviting. The island is filled with super friendly people. It was nice to connect with our neighbors right way. We hear fishing is great. We watched several families fishing at night and we seen photos of their awesome catches. We were blessed to have a golf cart and access to the pools with our cottage. A big thank you to the home owner! The golf carts are super fun and play a large role in the islands uniqueness. We explored the island all day and all night. My five year old daughter loved the freedom on the huge beach. She loved going to dinner each night in a different place and meeting new friends instantaneously. She also enjoyed bouncing from playground to playground by golf cart, of course. Daufuskie Island has a special setting that no other vacation can provide. A little planning prior to your arrival is all you need for a little piece of heaven. Thank you to all the wonderful people we met, it was a pleasure! Plan with Deborah at Daufuskie Rental Group, Shop with Charles at Cyber Valet Grocery, Enjoy your boat ride with Chris at May River Excursions, Meet Freddie at the dock with your luggage and groceries with Daufuskie Transit. Last but not least, make a couple of dinner reservations and you are on your way to a vacation like no other.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two teenagers (17 and 16), and I enjoyed our stay on Daufuskie! The cottage was clean and the kitchen was well-stocked with what we needed to prepare our meals. Our trip was extraordinarily peaceful and laid back. Deborah was extremely hospitable throughout our entire stay. The only problem we encountered was our golf-cart breaking down on the way to eat out on our last night. We called Deborah and within minutes she was there to pick us up and take us to our destination. During the week, my son and husband went kayaking and had a blast. We also rented bikes as a family and enjoyed touring the island. My daughter and I enjoyed our bike trip to the weekly farmer's market. We even had the privilege of attending Sunday service at the First Union African Baptist Church on the island, and we felt like we were at home. Everyone we encountered was so helpful and friendly. Melrose on the Beach was a great resort and we plan on visiting again!

Lovely 2nd row cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was my third stay in Melrose, but my first renting from this group and this unit. This unit is adorable. Very clean! Love that it's pet friendly, my dogs had their first beach trip to Daufuskie and had a WONDERFUL time! The screened in porch out back overlooking the trees was so peaceful. I loved the pool passes, it was so nice. I brought my parents to Daufuskie for the first time this trip and they really enjoyed it. We will be back and I wouldn't hesitate to book this unit again! Thank you Barb and Deborah for being so kind and helpful and responsive to all our questions and needs! Thank you!

Daufuskie Island is a wonderful relaxing getaway. The cottage was well appointed, convenient to beach and beach club. We have been to the island many times and the free cart is a great extra that comes with the house.

This lovely, second row, beach cottage, is located in Melrose on the Beach, just steps away from 2 miles of pristine, quiet beaches where all you can hear is the sound of gentle waves and beautiful shore birds. Watch the shrimp boats, bike along the beach, take a Historic tour and discover the Gulah History of Daufuskie or take in a round of golf. Don't forget to try our island delicacy, deviled crabs! Better still, we'll help arrange a full low-country dinner prepared by a local resident to be delivered directly to your cottage.

In addition to the Melrose resort, Daufuskie has several unique and colorful restaurants (Marshside Mama's and the Daufuskie Crab Company) where you'll swear you're in the middle of the Caribbean, as well as the casual but upscale Eagle's Nest at Bloody Point. History buffs will enjoy exploring the island and visiting various sites providing a glimpse into the past, including the recently-restored Oyster House used as a 19th century Gullah meeting place, the Billie Burns Museum, ancient cemeteries, and the two-room school house where renowned author Pat Conroy taught and which was the subject of his first book, The Water is Wide. Those interested in unique shopping opportunities will want to visit the Iron Fish Art Gallery, the Glass House, and the weekly farmer's market held at the public dock during the warmer months. And you certainly don't want to miss the Daufuskie Island Community Farm, where old and young visitors alike are encouraged to help feed the chickens and even to try milking a goat!
