About Jim Massey

My name is Jim Massey. I am a Civil Engineer, General Contractor, and Real Estate Broker, born in Winston-Salem. I came to Roaring Gap in 1965 where I met and married my wife, Nancy. She is a registered nurse with a specialty in surgery in Elkin and my partner in the real estate and construction business. WE ARE NEW TO THE RENTAL BUSINESS AND WILL NEGOITATE OUR RATES BASED ON NUMBER OF NIGHTS AND NUMBER OF PEOPLE STAYING. WE WILL ALSO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR BRINGING A PET.

Jim Massey purchased this chalet in 1998

Why Jim Massey chose Roaring Gap

My company designed and built this house at about half its present size in 1966 for a couple from Winston-Salem. Years later we built them a bigger home two houses up the street, and sold this house to a couple from Florida. When it became available again in 1998, Nancy and I bought it because all the really good view lots had been built on and we had always dreamed of living on one of the spectacular view properties on Ridge Road. We gutted it down to the bare framing, doubled its size and built it all over again, finishing in 2000. We lived here for 10 years and then moved into a new home across the street in Olde Beau. Ultravista is presently for sale, but will not be shown when there is a guest in the house. LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR HOME BY VIEWING OUR MORE THAN 20 FIVE STAR REVIEWS!

What makes this chalet unique

Having designed and built almost all the view homes on Ridge Road, Nancy and I knew that the view was good, but didn't know it was spectacular until we lived there. I didn't know that sunrises sometimes are as beautiful as the best sunset. Also, I had no idea that a full moon could be so brilliantly exciting. Watching lightning storms in the valley from up here is really special. So are fireworks in valley communities on July 4th. When the fog is lying in the valley, the mountain tops look like islands in a cotton sea. And every night when the lights come on down below, called 'valley stars' by locals, it looks like a large city. The view is different every day.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jim,Thank you again for your gracious hospitality. We truly enjoyed our stay and had a wonderful time. Everyone had nothing but good comments about the house, location and of course the beautiful view. I think we spent as much time on the deck as we could regardless of the weather!!! It was a perfect place for us!It was a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to seeing you again in the not to distant future.Kind regards,Bobby

We can't say enough about this great home and the good time we had there. The home is very spacious and comfortable for a large group (we had 13) with still having plenty of room to spare. We really enjoyed the decks (your choice of several), hanging out in the living room with the fireplace, and the ping pong table was a big hit with our crew. Of course we can't say enough about the views from the deck or really from most anywhere in the house. The home was very well stocked with appliances, grills, towels, beds, extra tables and chairs, games, and even a pantry that was surprising with what was in it. The state park is only 15 minutes away with some incredible hikes and there are a couple wineries nearby with some very good wines. Jim is a very accommodating and accessible gentleman and a pleasure to meet.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Mark, for choosing our house to have a large family get together and for driving 12 hours to get here. I enjoyed meeting you and your family and want you all to know how much I appreciate your leaving our home in such immaculate condition. I am glad you experienced the local wineries as there are a lot of them in the area, and everyone enjoys checking them out. As you know, Stone Mountain State Park is a fun place to visit as is the Blue Ridge Parkway, just 3 miles away. You will be more than welcome when you come back. Jim

WoW...this place is AMAZING! It starts right when you walk into the front door. Jim is the nicest and most accomodating owner you will ever meet. He wants your trip and his rental to be a great experience and is there anytime you need him. This is a perfect gathering spot if you want an "in-between" meeting place from the North and South. We had family driving from Michigan and Florida; two of our active duty young men flew into Charlottesville, which was only a hour away. We were so lucky with the the morning, we woke to a blanket of snow, with crisp winter air and a view that would take your breath away. The snow was perfect to make a snowman and snowangels...two of the teens had never seen snow before, so this was a real treat! Anywhere you go into this well planned and custom built home, you will have views that will be forever engrained into your mind because they are even greater than what you could take in a picture. The sun rises and sun sets are full with colors...just jaw dropping!!! We took a very short drive into the Stone Mountain State Park and hiked in to see some wonderful waterfalls - the next day, we hiked up to the Summit. For Thanksgiving, we brought our smoker and asked Jim for his help in locating a meat market. Jim did not disappoint us...we purchased the most delicious and tender turkey and tasty briskets from Combs Butcher Shop in Elkin, which was only 20 minutes away. You will also be delighted to know that there is a Super Walmart in Elkin, which was convenient for all of our shopping needs. Everyone slept great; all of the beds are comfortable and warm. The ping pong table was also great for those "Short" tournaments...Thank you Jim for allowing us to stay in your home. If anyone out there is looking for a perfect rental that has it all, this is the one!!!

Owner's Response: Many thanks, Sara, for your outstanding review of UltraVista, "Where the Mountains Meet the Sky". We have lots of scattered families that find this to be a good location for getting everybody together. During your stay was the first time our "Secret Room" was opened for the little tots. Also, I got a kick out of your group, practically standing in line to use the big glass block and tile shower with the picture window overlooking the mountains, dubbing it the "Scenic Shower". In addition, thank you for the area and family pictures for our bulletin board. I hope you folks can come back next year, as you will be more than welcome............Jim

Four siblings (and their spouses) make an annual trip to NC with their precious Mom to return her to her old stomping grounds and visit some of her family. She is 94 and still making the trip! There were 9 members of our family in this spacious, warm and well-laid out home! We have stayed many different places and this was our favorite, by far. There were still several empty beds! We all had our own bedroom/bathroom and felt like we had our own house. We came together for our meals in the comfortable living area and did I mention the VIEW?. It was obvious that this home was designed with the "Love of Family" in mind. When we arrived, the bad weather that had been predicted seemed to be upon us. The next morning, we were greeted with fog and were fearful that we would be denied the view that we'd seen online and had looked so forward to, but the weather favored us after all. Not only were we were able to make our annual 5-mile hike up to Caudill Cabin and another to Stone Mountain, but the view revealed itself to be more spectacular than we had imagined!!! We met the owner on our last day there and he was very accommodating. He wanted to make sure our stay was everything we had hoped for. It was more.........

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Beth, for your kind and complimentary review of our place in the mountains. It was a special pleasure to meet your Mom and find out that she is originally from a town nearby. I am glad the weather turned favorable while you were here so that you and your family could see the valley and far away ranges of mountains from atop the eastern continental divide. My best to you all, and I hope to see you again on your next annual trip. Jim

Gorgeous home with incredible views

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed four days in this beautiful home, with incredible views. The house and views were far better than we even imagined. There were 16 of us and we had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the inside and outside spaces, which were clean and wonderfully appointed. The beds were all very comfortable! The kitchen was well stocked and easy to cook in. This home did not seem like a rental because it was furnished with such lovely furnishings and accessories, and was clean and well-maintained.

While in the area, my family enjoyed hiking, driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and a lovely dinner at Nikola's Italian Restaurant, recommended by the owner. The location of the home allowed easy access to the area.

The owner was delightful. He did all he could to make sure our stay was all we hoped for. The reason for our trip was to celebrate our mom's 90th birthday. The owner was so kind to her; he even gave her a lovely jade plant as a gift. Now that's a caring host!

I would be happy to recommend this property to friends and relative's.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for sharing your experience at our mountain home, and I appreciate your mentioning the cleanliness, which is our primary goal. The neat and clean way in which the place says a lot about your family. I especially enjoyed meeting your Mom. She is delightful! You all are welcome back at any time.....Jim

If you are looking for a great place to get away, spectacular views and a beautiful place to stay ... then you are looking at the right place. The pictures are just a glimpse at what you will find. This was our ninth year that six (6) of us from six (6) different states got together to ride and the Chalet met all our expectations and more. You will not find a friendly host than Jim to do business with and who is willing to assist you in exploring the countryside. He was their to meet our group and to make sure everything was in order.

To sum it up ... we had a great experience and definitely recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Bobby, for your comments concerning our house on the mountain. I enjoyed meeting you and your friends (real gentlemen), and I must say that you left our place clean and neat. Also, it's kinda special that six motorcycle enthusiasts chose UltraVista as the location, coming from six different states, to meet and serve as a base to ride from each day. Be safe on the highways, and come see us when you can. Jim

Great escape!

The rental experience to this mountain chalet was wonderful! The house is beautiful, the mountain view is beyond beautiful and all the necessities were great! The owner was wonderful to work with, very attentive to making sure that everything was is order and especially helpful with the special accommodations needed for my Mother. We did have to travel a bit to get to the sites we wanted to see.....but the ride with the scenery is beautiful.

This chalet is a must stay! Great and friendly people in roaring Gap!

This cusom designed and built home, ULTRAVISTA, is located in High Meadows Development, home of the private High Meadows Golf and Country Club. Because the owner is a member, house guests can play golf most weekdays. The course is a meticulously maintained layout designed by the well known architect George Cobb. For more golf, guests may play across the street at Olde Beau Golf Club, which Curtis Strange called 'one of the greatest mountain golf courses ever built'. There are 2 more 18 hole courses within a 20 minute drive.

3 miles from High Meadows is the center of the famous 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway provides sightseeing, hiking, bicycling, restaurants, and pleasurable driving to many points of interests.

4 miles from High Meadows is the entry to Stone Mountain State Park. Bring your camera, because there is a lot to see and do - scenic walking trails, flora & fauna, waterfalls, horse trails, camping, trout fishing, picknicking, rock climbing and much more. Here in Alleghany County is the developing New River State Park (New River is the second oldest river in the world) for camping, tubing, hiking, picknicking, etc.

11 miles north is Sparta, NC, our county seat and a great small town to visit. Nestled between the local mountains, you will find our Court House, Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Farmer's Hardware, many restaurants, delis, and coffee shops, museum, arts and craft stores, wonderful local pottery, artists, campgrounds, fitness center, antiques & collectibles, grocery stores, pet care, river recreation, sporting goods, winery, etc.
