My name is Jim Massey. I am a Civil Engineer, General Contractor, and Real Estate Broker, born in Winston-Salem. I came to Roaring Gap in 1965 where I met and married my wife, Nancy. She is a registered nurse with a specialty in surgery in Elkin and my partner in the real estate and construction business. WE ARE NEW TO THE RENTAL BUSINESS AND WILL NEGOITATE OUR RATES BASED ON NUMBER OF NIGHTS AND NUMBER OF PEOPLE STAYING. WE WILL ALSO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR BRINGING A PET.

Jim Massey purchased this chalet in 1998

My company designed and built this house at about half its present size in 1966 for a couple from Winston-Salem. Years later we built them a bigger home two houses up the street, and sold this house to a couple from Florida. When it became available again in 1998, Nancy and I bought it because all the really good view lots had been built on and we had always dreamed of living on one of the spectacular view properties on Ridge Road. We gutted it down to the bare framing, doubled its size and built it all over again, finishing in 2000. We lived here for 10 years and then moved into a new home across the street in Olde Beau. Ultravista is presently for sale, but will not be shown when there is a guest in the house.

Having designed and built almost all the view homes on Ridge Road, Nancy and I knew that the view was good, but didn't know it was spectacular until we lived there. I didn't know that sunrises sometimes are as beautiful as the best sunset. Also, I had no idea that a full moon could be so brilliantly exciting. Watching lightning storms in the valley from up here is really special. So are fireworks in valley communities on July 4th. When the fog is lying in the valley, the mountain tops look like islands in a cotton sea. And every night when the lights come on down below, called 'valley stars' by locals, it looks like a large city. The view is different every day.

My family stayed at the Massey House for family event. I have stayed in many place around the country and the world. To date, there has been no place as beautiful, accommodating, or owners as friendly as this location and it's owner Jim Massey.

My wife, myself and family were thrilled with our stay and Jim Massey made us feel as welcome as if we were part of his family.

To anyone considering this area for visit you will be very please in choosing this property. It is perfect for kids, gatherings of friends and family, retreats, and simple getaways. I give the Massey House the highest recommendation available. The beauty is breathtaking!

Owner's Response: I just want to say thank you for allowing us to be a part of a special family occasion where you brought in folks from all over the southeast. We felt privileged to meet such a gracious group of people. I hope your future plans include a trip back to the mountain. You will surely be welcome here.

THE BEST RENTAL YOU WILL EVER STAY IN!

  • 5 of 5
We rented this house as the location for our wedding and as a place for our wedding party to stay.

And let me tell you, it was the best decision I made. The beautiful yard and view were the perfect backdrops. The large deck was accommodating for all 40 guests. And everyone in our wedding party slept perfectly in the heavenly beds. I personally enjoyed the jetted bathtub and over the top showers.

But most importantly, Jim Massey is a wonderful and lovely person to work with. He was straightforward and open to talking to us about anything with the house. And since he designed and built it, he is connected to the history of the house and is invested in making sure that your stay is perfect.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review of your stay at our place on the mountain. I enjoyed working with you from your first visit on as you planned your wedding. It reminded me of my marriage to Nancy in our new house just down Ridge Road in 1973. Yours was the second of four weddings we have scheduled for this year.
Here's wishing for you and Michael a long, happy, and loving life together. Maybe you can come back to UltraVista to celebrate some of your anniversaries. You will always be welcome.

Home is well equipped and has a beautiful view. The bedrooms are very nice and the common living areas were inviting for evening conversations. Would recommend to friends and will rent again. Owner was very helpful and responsive to all requests.

MOM'S 80TH BIRTHDAY

Mom's 80th Birthday
  • 5 of 5
For several weeks I looked for the right house to celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday early in April. Who would have thought that I would find it in Roaring Gap, NC…a place I did not know exist until I saw the house in the vrbo.com website.

Our party of ten included my parents, both in their 80s, my seven-year old niece and we also brought two family dogs. Because we travel everywhere with our pets, it is hard to find a nice and clean place to rent so when I came across the “Ultravista” house, I contacted the owner immediately. He agreed to let both dogs stay after I promised that we would take good care of the house. I even told him we would leave the house cleaner than how we would find it…and we did make good on our promise!

The house was perfect for our family gathering. The short drive to High Meadows Country Club was beautiful, even during early spring. What we loved the best was the view of the mountains from every single room. The décor was very nice. The house was clean and we got plenty of linens and nice towels. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed and the gas fireplace kept the house warm and cozy. The house is very well-designed with two King-size beds in the master bedrooms on the main level so my parents did not have to climb stairs. On the other hand, my niece really enjoyed the three levels and she had fun playing ping pong.

There was not much traffic in the area so some of us were able to take the dogs on long walks down the roads while enjoying the neighborhood. Also, the dogs had easy access to a nice yard on the first floor so the house layout was great for all our needs.

After many emails and phone conversations, my entire family and I finally got the pleasure of meeting Jim, the house owner. He is a very interesting person, super personable, friendly and with a great sense of humor. We appreciate his attentiveness and his recommendation to visit Stone Mountain State Park and to dine at Nikola’s Restaurant, where we had a memorable dinner for my mom’s birthday.

It was hard to end our short trip but we hope to return to “Ultravista” someday not too far away!

Owner's Response: I really appreciate your taking the time to review your stay at our home and the favorable comments. I enjoyed meeting you and your family, especially your Mom. Going to Stone Mountain State Park, only four miles away, is always a good choice, and don't forget the Blue Ridge Parkway is just three miles. Dzenko and Doreen, owners of Nikola's, said to tell you hello and thank you again for having the celebration of your Mom's 80th birthday at their restaurant. All good wishes to you and yours, and hurry back!

QUILT RETREAT SUCCESS 10X OVER !!

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 8 ladies were looking for a great place for our annual "quilt retreat" and this beautiful home provided us with A++ accommodations. There was plenty of room for us to sleep comfortably and to set up all our sewing machines. The owner, Jim, even provided us with the tables and chairs that we needed to set up our sewing stations. We were hoping for snow and were not disappointed since the area had the worst snowfall in years, but it provided the Florida gals with some beautiful white scenery.
Thank you for such a wonderful week of many completed quilting projects and new memories to cherish for years to come.

Owner's Response: What a treat it was to have you ladies here on the mountain for a week. And you were able to leave on time after our guys dug your cars out of an unusually deep snow storm. I enjoyed the pictures you sent of the quilts you made here, and will post them on our bulletin board. Keep up the good work, and please consider coming back next trip. Thank you for the visit.

This cusom designed and built home, ULTRAVISTA, is located in High Meadows Development, home of the private High Meadows Golf and Country Club. Because the owner is a member, house guests can play golf most weekdays. The course is a meticulously maintained layout designed by the well known architect George Cobb. For more golf, guests may play across the street at Olde Beau Golf Club, which Curtis Strange called 'one of the greatest mountain golf courses ever built'. There are 2 more 18 hole courses within a 20 minute drive.

3 miles from High Meadows is the center of the famous 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway provides sightseeing, hiking, bicycling, restaurants, and pleasurable driving to many points of interests.

4 miles from High Meadows is the entry to Stone Mountain State Park. Bring your camera, because there is a lot to see and do - scenic walking trails, flora & fauna, waterfalls, horse trails, camping, trout fishing, picknicking, rock climbing and much more. Here in Alleghany County is the developing New River State Park (New River is the second oldest river in the world) for camping, tubing, hiking, picknicking, etc.

11 miles north is Sparta, NC, our county seat and a great small town to visit. Nestled between the local mountains, you will find our Court House, Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Farmer's Hardware, many restaurants, delis, and coffee shops, museum, arts and craft stores, wonderful local pottery, artists, campgrounds, fitness center, antiques & collectibles, grocery stores, pet care, river recreation, sporting goods, winery, etc.

Vineyards and wine making comprise a huge industry in our area. Many wineries are within a 30 minute drive from ULTRAVISTA with tours, tasting, restaurants, and award winning wines.
