Shelter Island is an 8,000 acre paradise nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island. It is surrounded on three sides by Shelter Island Sound and on the fourth side by Gardiners Bay. Accessible only via ferry from North Haven to the south (approximately 5-minute trip) and Greenport to the north (approximately 8-minute trip), the island offers the best of all worlds, from the peace and quiet of its pristine natural surroundings to cultural attractions and night life. Vast tracts are protected wetlands & nature preserve marshland. Nearly one-third of the island is owned by The Nature Conservancy and kept in a forever-wild state. The Preserve has four nature and bird-watching trails, varying in length from 1.5 miles 11 miles.
The island is prized by vacationers for its breathtaking water views, pristine beaches and historic homes. The multitude of winding waterways, indented coves and quiet streets provides ample opportunities to kayak, canoe, paddle board, water ski, fish and bike, walk or job. Many fine restaurants are located on the island, including the renowned Vine Street Café [rated at 25 by Zagat]. There are also fresh fish shops and roadside stands brimming with local produce for one to enjoy.
