About Bill Werst

Bill has always loved small towns and thinks White Salmon is one of the best. He's a city councilman and has been actively engaged in a range of city improvement projects. He's perhaps most proud of his work to bring a wildly successful summer concert series to the area, livening up the town and bringing neighbors and tourists together. When he's not busy with city business Bill is dancing, playing piano, gardening, doing magic, telling jokes, or reading a good book. He'll take the time to help you get to know the area and help you find whatever suits your fancy - and there's a lot to offer inside or within a stone's throw of this great little town.

Bill Werst purchased this house in 2003

Why Bill Werst chose White Salmon

This property is located on the east end of downtown, an easy stroll to all shops and amenities. The river is just down the road, the mountains up, and a garden, patio and hot tub just steps outside the door. Main highways are a mile or two away, and will get you to the beach and snow ski resorts.

What makes this house unique

The New York Times listed White Salmon in their top 40 places to visit in 2013. With a dam recently removed, the White Salmon river now offers unprecedented white water experiences. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or an arts and antiques aficionado, there's something for everyone here. If you've got a month or just a weekend, White Salmon is a wonderful place to rest and recreate.

Enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5
The house was in great shape; clean and comfortable with everything we needed during our stay (e.g., cook wear, utensils, extra towels). Our arrival time was somewhat uncertain because we were driving up from southern Oregon and Bill was very accommodating and flexible.

In addition, the house is well located. We were able to walk to a near by grocery store and coffee stand and were only minutes away from Hood River and within easy driving distance of Mt Hood and Columbia Gorge attractions. And the view of Mt Hood from the porch was incredible. After a day of hiking and sightseeing it was nice to sit comfortably outside and watch the sunset on the mountain.

My family travels to the gorge regularly and we'd happily stay here again. Thanks for a great stay, Bill.

Big yellow house

  • 5 of 5
Bill is a wonderful host, very generous, helpful and hospitable. We were welcomed and told to make ourselves at home and use anything in the house. Great beds plenty of fans and large thick towels. We especially loved sitting on the large front porch and sitting in the hot tub with the view of Mt Hood was a plus.
I would recommend this house and host to anyone and be happy to visit there again.

House with real personality

  • 5 of 5
Our group rented the whole house for several days in July. It was a great place to stay, walking distance to White Salmon restaurants and shops. Short drive to kiteboarding, wind surfing and mountain bike trails. Bill couldn't have been a better host, he made our stay comfortable and made us feel welcome. Our kids loved the keyboards he let them "practice" on and also the hot tub and cherry trees. The house is large and charming, our favorite feature is the large front porch where we could enjoy coffee mornings and wine in the evenings. Bill was a fun person to visit with as well. We will stay again.

Rent for the house - stay for the owner !

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stayed at Bill's house and felt at home from the first "Hello". Communication - 10+. House is charming (saw a capstone dated 1917!) Wonderful wildflower yard. The owner/Host meets you at the door and welcomed us to a beautiful bottle of wine. Bill invited us to use anything (and I mean anything!) in the home. We were comfortable and WELL cared for. We booked the whole house and had two separate bathrooms for our family. Beds were great - house is on an active street, but QUIET at night. Incredible view of Mt. Hood morning and evening. Close to the Kite-boarders and two quaint little downtown areas. This was our first VRBO and it will not be our last. Bill could not have tried harder, and NO I am not a relative!!! Just happy to be a new friend! :-)

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

  • 1 of 5
This property should not be listed on VRBO. The entire house was trashy both inside and outside. Bedroom and dining room lights did not work. No heat in apartment room. We were given one set of towels each for four days. Owner left cat and litter box in house. Shower curtains had mildew. Owner kept coming in to get personal belongings. Hot tub unusable, grill not cleaned. Don’t believe rave reviews and fancy pictures. Let the buyer beware! We could have stayed in a cheap motel and had better accommodations.
Sorry, Bill, it was way overpriced for what we got.

Owner's Response: We have been renting The Big Yellow House for seven years and have never gotten a negative review - - until now.

We greet our guests when they arrive and provide an orientation to the entire house. These guests arrived 4 hours early, dropped their bags, and took off. They refused any orientation. Their third member arrived sometime after midnight, then arrogantly challenged me the next day as I walked through the backyard.

Consequently, they never learned how the remote light switches work in the bedroom and dining room, how the electric fireplace works in the apartment, how to turn on the thermostat for the house and apartment, where the extra towels are stored both in the house and at the hot tub, or how to turn on the hot tub.

Regarding staying in a “cheap motel”, we would have preferred they did. At $83/night/person, including cleaning fee, for the fully restored 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 kitchen, 100 year old Big Yellow House, twice showcased on the Bingen Historical Museum’s Historical Home Tour, we would all have been better served.

Perfect place to enjoy the beautiful Columbia River Gorge

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed here for a month to windsurf. Bill is a wonderful host. He welcomes you and goes above and beyond to make your stay special. He even accomodated our last minute guests! We enjoyed our evenings on the porch and even had yummy brats and salmon! The apartment is spacious and comfortable. We loved being walking distance to wonderful restaurants and the grocery store. It is also close to creek hiking and awesome mountain biking. We hope to stay again next summer!
