Why Katerina Ioannou chose Evia

My parents started building the house with their very personal hard work and taste. It took some time to start looking the way it does today. My mother Aspasia has personally done and taken care of the art work in the house as well as the beautiful little garden itself against weather and soil conditions being so close to the sea making impossible to plant practically anything. My father Stratis has build most of the house itself along with the loft, outside roof, fireplace and the beautiful corn stalk kitchen ceiling which is hand made piece by piece. We have all loved this house so much that even though it has been our summer, Christmas and Easter house, it feels like our very own home because it is connected with our innocent childhood when we spent all day long in the sea, diving from the canoe, exploring the sea bed, the cliffs, looking for shells and oysters and hanging around with the rest of the kids in the village until well after the sunset.

What makes this villa unique

It is very close to the sea which is very safe for children to swim, snorkle or canoe insince mothers can have a direct and at all times view over the sea. The villlage itself is very safe and a real heaven for kids to hang around unattended, going fishing at the port and use the playground just a hundred metres away. There are two family taverns with fresh fish which has been caught on the same day by the fishermen-tavern owners. You can take long walks around the bay or to the picturesque Sikies Yerou beach if you prefer a longer walk. There are many things to do while relaxing in the near by villages as well or you can explore the still untouched by massive tourism Southern Evia. Places such as go hiking in the Dimosari Gorge, bird watching in Distos Lake with many species or explore the tiny villages at the far end of Southern Evia. Pick your piece of adventure to live.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(while staying at the house) ''We feel so lucky to be staying in your lovely house. So many personal things really make it a home for us too. And thank you all for the welcoming wine, ouzo, fruit and everything - that was appreciated.''

Charming welcome and very pleasant stay

  • 5 of 5
Very warm welcome and a very pleasant stay! We enjoyed our holidays in the very clean and nice house with a characteristic greek atmosphere. Well equipped kitchen. Terrace view on the sea is great with green garden in front.
Maria, Katherina and Aspasia are very helpfull.
Village Porto Buffalo is really calm, one friendly tavern, thats it! (baker and manavis come by car).
We will return hopefully soon to this lonely paradise.

A beautiful spot

  • 5 of 5
This is obviously a much loved home and Aspasia certainly made us feel very welcome there, generously leaving lots of provisions, toys and maps so that we could enjoy this rural area of Greece. The sea was beautifully clear and warm and our three small boys loved playing on the paddle board, snorkelling and swimming in the safe water just outside the house. The village is friendly and although you need to travel by car for your shopping, the baker and grocer do deliver. The weather at the end of October was lovely and warm and we travelled to a couple of local beaches and to the south of Evia for walking and exploring further afield.

A Great Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5
We had a fabulous family holiday in the house in Boufalo. The house is right on the edge of a bay - just as the pictures, so you can walk through the garden gates and down three steps into the sea! As it is a bay the sea is very calm so we had no problem in letting our children (both aged 8 and good swimmers) to go off to play in the sea on their own. There was often a couple of locals in the sea anyway who would look out for them.

The sea was the main focus of the holiday as in previous years we had always had a pool, however, being so close to the sea a pool wasn't even missed this year! The water was very warm and clear and shallow for quite a long way out so the kids tried out snorkelling for the first time and loved it. The house also came with a windsurf board and paddles which were perfect for getting out into deeper water in the bay - all four of us could just about squeeze on!

The weather was fabulous for the whole two weeks - we've had rain in the summer in Morocco before so are always a little wary! But for the two weeks in August we were there it was full sun and high 30s. Just perfect!

The house is a reasonable size - perfect for a family of four - with two good sized bedrooms with great views over the bay and a small platform 'loft' level over the stairs which has a mattress filling it - so for the two weeks our kids slept there, building and rebuilding dens, and one bedroom remained empty. The house is well kitted out and had everything we needed, and the owners cleaned it every four days so was always nicely kept.

Behind the house is a very small fishing village, with a couple of small restaurants. Having two 8 year olds meant that we did not see much of the nightlife but as you would expect it is very quiet around there. We had lots of lunches out - there are some great tavernas dotted around and we always seemed to order too much food! For several days we went off to explore the island and found a couple of really lovely beaches within half an hour's drive. Favourite was on the opposite coast which had a taverna by the beach and, as it was open to the Aegean, a few more waves. On a practical note there are also large supermarkets (Carrefour and Lidl) around half an hour away.

The whole island seems unspoilt by tourism - over our holiday in Evia we saw only one other English family! On the way back we stopped in Athens for two days which was quite a change in pace! Overall the kids voted it their favourite holiday yet!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely review.

We do appreciate taking the time in submiting it as that can be so helpful for future holiday makers.

I am glad you did enjoy your stay and your kids voted it their favourite holiday yet!

Me and my mum did enjoy having you much.

It was great you get to canoe and all the family was so brave to paddle a good distance away from the beach.

Your kids was definitely voted the most favorite sea turtles of Porto Buffalo ever.. As they where in the water most of the time!!

Love to all of your family,

Ioannou family.

The perfect spot, away from the crowds

  • 5 of 5
The house in Porto Buffalo is wonderfully cozy, charming and well equipped. It is ideal for families with young (or not so young) children. Ours (3 and 7) enjoyed every minute of our stay. The small bay is a haven of peace, and there is much to see all around Porto Buffalo. Although it is thnnkfully off the beaten path, it is very easy to find and access from Athens or the airport. The owner and her family's kindness and generosity will only make wish you had stayed longer...

A little piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5
I cannot say enough about how cozy, comfortable, and well equipped this villa is. The villa offered everything we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The villa is located in a small village but town is not too far away. Having the beach right outside the gate, especially on those hot July days in Greece was a luxury I wish I could take home with me. The villa truly offers the comforts of home. It is clean and very well maintained. We wanted for nothing during our stay. The delivery man with bakery goods was a delight and having access to the fresh fruit off the fruit delivery truck was a wonderful treat.
It is obvious the owners work hard to make sure their guests are happy. Not only from the rental process and answering questions about the area and things to do but the welcome upon arrival started the blissful vacation off on the right foot. Delicious food items, including a homemade cake, welcomed us along with our friendly hosts. Our hosts were clearly eager to make the stay pleasant and we could not have asked for better people to rent from.
The island of Evia is beautiful and fun to explore and the drive from Athens is easy after the first time. The owners were kind enough to come meet us in a nearby town when, after 24 hours of traveling, we missed the turn to Porto Bouffalo.
We truly enjoyed the Greek experience the villa offered. I have been suggesting a vacation here to everyone I talk to about my vacation.I hope to return again and wholeheartedly recommend this lovely, peaceful property to anyone seeking a lovely stay in a friendly Greek village.

A real Greek experience

  • 5 of 5
We spent 11 blissful days with my son and his family in this beautiful, peaceful spot last Sept. The villa was exceptionally well-equipped. It even had plenty of toys and beach equipment for the children. We were supplied with more towels than we could use - includng beach towels - and these and the bed linen were all changed half way through our stay and the villa thoroughly cleaned. On arrival there was home made cake, wine and all sorts of treats awaiting us and the owners couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.
We found some lovely beaches within a short drive suitable for the children (aged 3 and 18 months) and the meat from the recommended butcher was delicious.
The son shone every day and we didn't see a cloud in the sky.
We soon felt part of the little community in Porto Boufalo and were sad to leave. We hope to return soon and would recommend this property without hesitation.

Porto Bouffalo is a very small picturesque fisherman's village on the island of Evia, is approached by a downhill country road and from the top of the mountain the views of this marvellous natural harbour are breathtaking.

Bouffalo has a little port and a small beach in a beautifull gulf that keeps the waters of the sea always calm, perfect for swimming. Is located 10-15min by car or craft to 3 private beautiful beaches. It has 3 fish tavernas at the waters edge and this is the perfect place to sit and enjoy an ouzo and fresh local sea food while the sun goes down. There you can also buy fresh seafood every day if you prefer cooking. It has very easy access for day tours to explore the beautiful Evia. The nearest shopping facilities are in Argiro (5min drive) and at Zarakes and Krieza (20 and 15 min drive).

Buffalo is just 2hours and 15min drive from Athens and is not a busy touristic place. There you can find true peacefulness, is the best place to recharge and rest.
