Dan and Heidi moved to Austin in the early 90's right after college, both love the unique benefits and eclectic mix of people in Austin and wouldn't want to live anywhere else in Texas. Dan works as a financial analyst for the State of Texas and Heidi is a teacher at the Texas School for the Blind.

Daniel Otto purchased this bungalow in 1996

In my humble opinion this is the best neighborhood in Central Austin with everything needed within walking distance. I lived without a car here for a 4 year stretch and never felt stranded from anything I needed. The ability to get anywhere in central city by foot, bike or bus is definitely my favorite benefit of the location. There is also the plus of being in quiet family oriented neighborhood far enough north of the kids in west campus but only 1 block from the busy Guadalupe drag with its interesting mix of shops and people.

The house was my primary residence from 1996 until 2010 when I moved in with Heidi. Heidi and I have had some fantastic travels in the last few years and we stayed in some great vacation rentals and I wanted to be able to share that same experience with others coming to visit Austin. Since making this decision we have spent 3 months renovating the property inside and out keeping in mind what was most important to us when were staying in vacation rentals. We love the cozy feel of the house and the wonderful screened in porch for chilling out! The house has been furnished with a mix of brand new and used pieces with character. The modern bedroom furnishings, new couches and entertainment center are fabulous. Hope you have a lovely stay!

Perfect for us

This house was just as described.. It was in a perfect location. We walked to the organic grocery store. We didn't visit the Bakery, which was only a block away. Bus stops are close. Lots of food options within waling distance. The house had two comfortable queen beds. The decor is unique...but we liked it. It was a home away from home. We enjoyed the gas grill in back yard. We will be back!

Charming Contemporary Bungalow

  • 5 of 5
We are two Moms from L.A. visiting our daughters for UT's Parents Weekend. Not only was the location convenient for walking to campus, we were near the residence hall/apartment where our girls lived. The local Wheatsville grocery store was just down the street for purchasing healthy basic food for preparing meals in our retro style kitchen. The kitchen had basic utensils, pots and pans and supplies. The washer/dryer in the enclosed patio was useful for a few loads of laundry. It was amazing how clean the entire house was! The backdoor locks were a little tricky, but we felt very safe in this neighborhood. Our girls stayed with us and they enjoyed this sweet little "home away from home." Would recommend this over a hotel room for visits to UT Austin!!

Awesome in Austin!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and our two sons stayed here in the heat of August. Dan was very helpful and responsive with recommended sites and restaurants. Do not miss Barton Springs Pool! We went on a Sunday morning and it was a fantastic way to start the day!
The house was a great alternative to a hotel, especially when traveling with teenagers - space for everyone to spread out. Although it was hot outside, we enjoyed morning coffee on the screened-in porch. The electronic combination lock is GREAT if you have groups coming and going - no need to worry about keys.
Thanks for a great stay and a great introduction to Austin!

Location, location, location!

If you want a great University-area location for your next visit to Austin, then this bungalow is the spot for you. We enjoyed walking to Wildwood Bakery Cafe, Wheatsville grocery, great restaurants, a nearby park, and more. We own short term rentals ourselves and were completely booked and need a place to stay . . . you could say we have pretty high standards when it comes to housing . . . so it is with honesty we highly recommend this quintessentially Austin home. Dan is the perfect host--easily reachable for questions--and his bungalow was spotlessly clean and has that cool Austin vibe that you will love. Our favorite part was the indoor/outdoor screened in porch area which was a great place for unwinding after a day on the town.

Would choose again

Having no directional skills and not being familiar with Austin area, this was a great location. I could get to easily, leave, and find my way back with no trouble. The neighborhood was quiet. Walking distance to very cool co-op grocery store with lots of organic choices. The house was clean so much so, I wanted to go home and de-clutter my own. It was a good location for anyone wanting to be near campus but due to the heat, I considered it a little too far to actually walk but Dan provides a very detailed bus schedule. Picks up very close. Having teenagers where one hotel room is really not optimal any longer, this house met our needs, cheaper than hotel, and very comfortable for all of us to spread out.Small issue with toilet but Dan promptly took care of and was fixed by the time we got back to the house. I was a little hesitant looking at neighbors yard that was cluttered but they were so quiet and well, you can't really control your neighbors. There is a wonderful Zen Garden House across the street that more than makes up for the messy neighbor. Overall, it worked for us and I would not think twice about staying again. In fact, I plan on booking it for parent weekend! Oh, the screened in back porch is perfect for morning coffee!
In answer to review tips and guideline: listing description was accurate, photos accurately reflected the house, very clean. owner and owner's notebook were very helpful, and yes, I would recommend this property to friends.
