Martha's Meadow is a studio apartment located on a small horse property in the heart of Penns Valley, a happening rural community 25 miles east of Penn State University. A queen bed and sleeping bag/air mattress loft accommodates up to 4 adults. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, fridge, and microwave. Watch deer, hawks, birds and small game from the front porch. Premier fly fishing is found just down the road at public access to Penns, Elk and Pine Creeks. Woodward Sports Camp is four miles away. Miles of back roads encourage the visitor to bicycle to most points of interest so bring your bike!
I am a life-long resident of Penns Valley. An ethusiastic equestrian, I have been riding the local trails since I was a young girl. I am active in the local community, most recently becoming involved in a feasibility study for a proposed rails to trails project. My family lives in the area, my brother owns and operates an organic grass-fed dairy which produces artisan cheeses.
Martha purchased this cabin in 2001
I can name who has lived at this home for the past fifty years. From the road it's hard to see the property but when I saw the 'for sale' sign twelve years ago I knew what was behind it and I scraped together all I had and added a whole lot of prayer and was able to buy this little piece of paradise.
I've made the place my own by adding a barn. I can just saddle up and ride out. A half mile of back road and I'm onto the unpaved road into the mountains. Its private and yet convenient to town. The 'back' of the house faces the mountain. I never tire of the view.
Martha's Meadow proved to be the perfect Valentine's Day retreat for my boyfriend and I. We arrived on snowy afternoon to a warm, immaculate and cozy "cabin in the woods" the "wood stove" was going and we felt instantly at home and relaxed. We enjoyed walking up through the snow to say hello to Indigo and Pirate, her horses and peak in on all the chickens (which provided delicious eggs for breakfast throughout our stay). Despite the cold temps and snowy conditions we ventured out into the beautiful countryside and it did not disappoint. At the same time we were very happy to return to our home away from home at Martha's Meadow to the warm cabin full of beautiful quilts and comfortable furniture. We read, slept, relaxed and loved each other away all weekend. And we cannot wait to return. Thank you so much Martha!!
Our stay with Martha could not have been better. Just writing this review makes us want to go back. She and Roxy (dog) made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Everything was clean and homey when we arrived. The location was the quiet, relaxing weekend we were looking for and would definitely consider going back!
My girlfriend and I stayed at Martha's Meadow over Christmas to get away from all the hustle and bustle for a bit. It was a great choice! We felt very welcome from the second we arrived until we got in the car to leave. Martha was not only very accommodating, but she was also very friendly. She made sure we were provided with anything that we needed for our short stay there. We plan on going back within the year. It is the perfect home away from home!
A couple of friends and I stayed in Martha's Meadow for the weekend, and could not have been any more satisfied with the place. Martha was an absolutely excellent host; accommodating, attentive yet noninvasive. Her two dogs were wonderfully entertaining, and added a home-like quality to the setting. Her property was beautiful and relatively secluded, which offered the perfect setting for a quiet retreat. The weekend yielded over a foot of snow for us, so much of the time was spent in her well appointed, attached apartment. The full kitchen had settings for 8, with plenty of cookware for whatever you're looking to make. The bathroom was very clean, the towels fresh, and the shower hot. The queen 'log' bed shown in the photos was very comfortable, and the sleeping loft had a queen air mattress. Another air mattress could easily fit up there if the need arose. There is a propane 'woodburner' that is on a thermostat, and is both beautiful to watch and inviting after time outside in the snow. Plenty of seating for everyone. We actually play in a folk band together, and found the space perfect for some light recording and hanging out to play. I would return to Martha's in a second, and I plan to the next time my travels take me toward State College, Milheim, or even Lewisburg. Martha, it was a pleasure to get to know you, and I hope that you continue to offer your wonderful home to folks looking for a quiet retreat. All the best!
This is a great place - I am glad we stumbled upon it. Martha is a super host, the space is awesome, the animals are friendly and I liked the ability to wake up whenever we needed to and make breakfast for ourselves. If we ever come back out to Penn St or the surrounding area, we will stay here again in a heartbeat.
Located near the bustling small town of Millheim where you find local micro brews, farm markets, meat market, and unique gift shopping. Fly fishing, kayaking, canoeing and tubing on Penns Creek. Horseback riding in the Bald Eagle State Park. All this makes for a happening place at the end of the lane. Yet, Martha's Meadow is a place of peace and quiet with more horse drawn vehicles on the road than cars as Amish neighbors go about their business.
