HIGH DESERT RAMMED-EARTH HOME - SONOITA, PATAGONIA AREA

Patagonia House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Office (sleeps 6) - Birder's Heaven!

Popular with Birdwatchers, this comfortable, spacious, rammed-earth home in peaceful Southern Arizona is just a few miles north of the Village of Elgin, near Patagonia and Sonoita. This home is on five acres at a charming 'end-of-the-road' location. You'll find it romantic and unique if you wish to stay 'home' to relax & rejuvenate, as well as being a wonderful base from which to explore this beautiful & diverse part of Arizona.

The home has lots of comfortable nooks to relax in. The private walled yard is a great place to soak up the ample Arizona sunshine. You may never want to leave the property, as the views of the Whetstones to the East, wilderness of the Empire Cienega to the north & Biscuit Mountain to the south are magnificent. The night skies are alive with stars - probably more than you have seen in years.

A short drive will take you to the world-famous bird-watching areas of Ramsey Canyon or the Patagonia Bird Sanctuary, as well as historic Tombstone, Bisbee & Benson. Parker Canyon & Patagonia Lakes are about 45 minutes & 30 minutes away, respectively. Elgin Wine country is only five miles from the home.

There's something for everyone to enjoy here. The home will give you a true southwestern experience & is an exceptional property.

(Please note...there is about 1/4 mile of dirt road to cross as you approach the property, but all types of vehicles have used it, including low-profile sports cars, with no problem.

I have owned this home since it was built in the early 1980's and it is very dear to my heart. It was built with energy efficiency in mind & to take advantage of the southern exposure for light & heating. The thick rammed-earth walls (like adobe, but compacted in place) make it very comfortable in all seasons with a wonderful ambiance which I love to share with my many happy guests. Renting the home as a vacation rental is a great way to let others experience it's wonderful qualities. My two sons grew up in the home & it proved to be a very creative & interesting environment for them and continues to be so for the children of our guests. It is truly a special property in a location that is quiet & beautiful, but not far from the many activities the Southeastern Arizona area has to offer. If you stay here don't forget to bring your pets as well since they will have a great time too.

Karen Howard purchased this house in 1983

This location is wonderful since it is only 2 miles from Highway 82. Visiting all the sites this unique part of the world has to offer is so convenient from here. Restaurants are plentiful and easy to drive to and from if you don't want to cook in the spacious kitchen. I was introduced to this area by my mother and father who discovered it after searching all over Arizona. They were avid fishermen so the location being near Patagonia Lake and Parker Canyon Lake was perfect for them for day fishing and boating trips.

This home really lets the creative juices flow with it's great energy & is a favorite for artists & musicians. Hiking opportunities abound on the Empire Cienega Ranch to the north where you are sure to spot some unique wildlife & may even luck into finding an arrowhead or worked stone. Being within 30 minutes of Sierra Vista allows easy access to the large chain grocery stores if you like to prepare your own meals, but at the edge of wilderness when returning to the property. It really is the best of both worlds here.

More then expected!

Way more then expected. You know how places always look good in pictures? Well, this home was PERFECT. Many thanks to Karen for keeping this home ready for visitors. We will be back. My sister can send all visitors down the road, now that we know about this home. We were in town for a graduation and needed a nearby place for family. We had no idea we could have a morning stroll to where my sister lived. Loved the kitchen. We cook. There was even soap and laundry detergent. Very well equip home! My only note; floors are not even and there are levels, so anyone with mobility issues might have trouble.

Rain valley house review

The property was unique and adequately furnished. We enjoyed the peace and quiet! The main drawback was the last 1/4 mile of dirt and rock road, leading to the property turnoff.

Excellent location for birding southeastern AZ. Wonderful house with very good furnishing. linens, etc. There were 7 of us--all adults over 60-- and we loved a real AZ experience--so different from humid NC ; not better but a desert/grassland opposite.
Two of us are professional artists and the courtyard proved a good spot to capture out impressions. Everyone got new birds for their life-lists and we came away very pleased with our stay. Thank you, Karen.

Owner's Response: I'm so happy the property worked out for your "girl's getaway" and that the birds cooperated. We're happy to hear about your life list additions. Hope you can come back again.

We had such fun. The house was, as we liked to say, quirky, but in a good way. We played over 100 games of pool over the month. The weather was fantastic! The bird watching around the area was wonderful! We saw an Elegant Trogon at Patagonia Lake. Karen was always available to us. She is very sweet.

Wonderfully rustic, beautiful rural setting, one-of-a-kind home

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here with 3 adults plus 1 child for 3 nights over the long Thanksgiving weekend and had a wonderful time. The 3 bedrooms worked out perfectly for us. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, the master bath and a small sitting/reading room plus a small loft area. Downstairs is the main living floor with 1 additional bedroom, another full bath with a claw foot tub, a dining/Arizona room, living area, kitchen, a large utility room/pantry with full sized washer and dryer, plus the round room with a pool table.

A wood burning stove is in the main living area along with another fireplace in the round room. There was plenty of wood for heating + electric space heaters. We never really used the heaters as the wood burning stove provided all the heat we needed. The kitchen is functional and like everything else in the house, unique. It has commercial grade fixtures along with everything you need to prepare basic meals.

It was a pretty decent drive to services like groceries. There were a couple of small stores in Sonoita, but for anything major at all Sierra Vista is probably the closest thing. Again, this was no problem for us as we just planned our meals carefully and had no reason to leave for food. We recommend planning ahead and there would be no problem.

Speaking of leaving: there is a ton of stuff to do and things to see in the area. We explored Tombstone and Bisbee one day and went to Kartchner Caverns the next. There is hiking, scenic drives, wineries, etc, etc, all in the area. Any drive is met with truly spectacular views of grasslands and mountains overlooking the valleys.

The only criticisms I have are very minor, but may make a difference for some: the main living area could use some additional comfortable seating as the couch is only "loveseat" sized, and the TV is dated in this age of flat LCD TVs. On the other hand with only 4 people we were not at all uncomfortable as there are chairs too, and the house was equipped with DirecTV service and satellite internet with WiFi coverage in the house. The only issue we had was when we overloaded a circuit and had trouble resetting the breaker. Karen was there within 20 minutes of our phone call to fix it, on Thanksgiving Day no less. Thanks Karen!

Some people may be put off by the rustic nature of the accommodations, but we absolutely loved it. It may be rustic, but it was clean and had everything we needed. Thanks again!
