Popular with Birdwatchers, Night Sky enthusiasts and Winter visitors, this comfortable, spacious, rammed-earth home in peaceful Southern Arizona is just a few miles north of the Village of Elgin, near Patagonia and Sonoita. On five acres at a charming 'end-of-the-road' location, you will find the property romantic and unique if you wish to stay 'home' to relax & rejuvenate, or as a wonderful base from which to explore this beautiful & diverse part of Arizona.
Its thick stuccoed walls which blend gracefully into the terrain, provide comfortable nooks both inside and out to relax in. Soak up the ample Arizona sunshine in the walled yard. The kitchen is equipped with most everything needed for cooking at home when you don't want to visit one of the great local restaurants. A pool table is in place for your entertainment along with a collection of dvd's. There is a dining table which seats 6 and sofas for gathering in front of the television. The rammed earth construction keeps the ambient temperatures even - when you do need heat, the wood stove will heat the entire home or you can use the electric heaters. Outside there is a table and barbeque/smoker (firewood provided).
The master bedroom on the second floor is furnished with a king-sized bed and has its own bathroom with southwest accents. The west upstairs bedroom has a queen bed and the same fantastic northerly views that the master has. Across from this room is the office (loft) with door for privacy. You will find excellent cell reception with Verizon in this area of the home. The landing at the top of the stairs also has a pull-out single sofa. New carpeting has been installed upstairs so we ask that shoes and pets be kept downstairs.
The downstairs bedroom is equipped with a queen-sized bed and is cozy and comfortable. This room is sunken slightly from the main floor so has two shallow steps to access. Across from this room is the full bath with claw-foot tub.
You may never want to leave the property, as the views of the Whetstones to the East, wilderness of the Empire Cienega to the north & Biscuit Mountain to the south are magnificent. The night skies are alive with stars - probably more than you have seen in years.
A short drive will take you to the world-famous bird-watching areas of Ramsey Canyon or the Patagonia Bird Sanctuary, as well as historic Tombstone, Bisbee & Benson. Parker Canyon & Patagonia Lakes are about 45 minutes & 30 minutes away, respectively. Elgin Wine country is only five miles from the home.
There's something for everyone to enjoy here. The home will give you a true southwestern experience & is an exceptional property.
(Please note...there is about 1/4 mile of dirt road to cross as you approach the property, but all types of vehicles have used it, including sports cars, with no problem.

We have owned this home since it was built in the early 1980's and it is very dear to our hearts. It was built with energy efficiency in mind & to take advantage of the southern exposure for light & heating. The thick rammed-earth walls (like adobe, but compacted in place) make it very comfortable in all seasons with a wonderful ambiance which we love to share with our many happy guests. Renting the home as a vacation rental is a great way to let others experience the qualities that we so enjoy. It is truly a special property in a location that is quiet & beautiful, but not far from the many activities the Southeastern Arizona area has to offer. If you stay here don't forget to bring your pets as well since they will have a great time too.
Karen Howard purchased this house in 1983
Our family members discovered this area after searching all over Arizona for a retirement location. Virtually on the edge of thousands of acres of public land, yet within half an hour of metropolitan areas, this is the best of both worlds. Only 2 miles from Highway 82, the property provides a central location from which to explore all the sights this unique part of the world has to offer.
This home really lets the creative juices flow & has been a favorite for artists & musicians. Hiking opportunities abound on the Empire Cienega Ranch to the north where you are sure to spot some unique wildlife & may even luck into finding an arrowhead or worked stone. Near all the activities, restaurants, galleries of Sonoita and Patagonia and wine country of Elgin, yet at the edge of wilderness.
