I have lived in Del Norte County for almost 30 years and acquired this property to property manage and list for sale recently. I am a licencensed California Real Estate Agent @Ming Tree Real Estate; DRE # 01221233.
This is my favorite spot on the Smith River and I, along with my husband, VERNE (caretaker), THE OWNERS, want to share the experience with others.
Donna Zorn and Verne Zorn purchased this house in 2010
Just lucky! Privacy and seclusion!
If you love the wilderness and out door activities, you will love this vacation spot. The location and proximity to recreation make this one stand out from the rest. The Emerald Waters of the South Fork of the Smith River are truely spectacular!
We stayed at the “luxurious and remote paradise on the south fork of the Smith River!” from 7/27 - 8/2/2014. We had a mixed experience with this property.
The house, its setting and the many decks are simply gorgeous and a wood lover’s dream! The architecture and river are wonderful. The double tile walk in shower was stunning and a pure joy to use. The house was immaculate when we arrived.
While we enjoyed the riverfront view, and swimming in the river; the many rugged, irregular steps descending approximately 60 feet to the banks of the Smith River are challenging for able-bodied people and not for people with mobility issues, despite info on this properties website that promises 'easy path to the river'. Also note that the “fully equipped kitchen” does not include a dishwasher.
Our main problem during this very hot summer stay (all 6 days were 85 degrees plus) was staying comfortable in this “hot house.” While we knew going into our stay that the house had no air conditioning, we (wrongly) assumed from the listing touting “luxury accommodations " meant the house would be effectively cooled by other means. Unfortunately, there was not even a simple box fan in the whole house and only two of the three ceiling fans were operational. By early afternoon the inside of the house was hotter than outside due to solar gain. Airflow through the house was relatively poor, although it did cool at night and become comfortable by late evening. Unfortunately the owners did not have any assistance to offer other than to reimburse the cost of our purchase of a box fan. The caretaker reported he was unable to replace the missing remote control which was required to operate the ceiling fan above the master bed. All in all, the inside of this lovely house was essentially not usable from about 1 pm until 8 pm. Finally we left one day early being unable to face the sweltering conditions in the house another day.
The drive from the house to the nearest Redwood Grove and to Crescent City become quite arduous with repetition and you should plan on 30 minutes to Crescent City at best, longer in the dark, due to the curves and lack of lighting.
Despite the lovely setting and beautiful home, the opportunity for star-gazing without city light pollution and a private swimming hole in a beautiful river; we would not recommend this rental during the summer heat.
My husband and I stayed at Emerald Waters for five nights earlier this month and were amazed by its beauty. Built as a retirement home by the original owners, their love for the property shows in every detail. The house has an unusual open arrangement that gives magnificent views down to the Smith River from every one of the large panoramic windows. The only drawback for some may be its remoteness. It takes at least a ½ hour to get to Crescent City, although the nearby Howland Hill Road through the Redwoods National Forest past Stout Grove is a special way to go there. Both Donna and Vern, the property managers and caretakers couldn't have been more helpful in making our arrangements.
Our family stayed at Emerald Waters for 5 days in August. The stay was amazing. Our girls (8 and 5) loved the loft bedroom, swam in the River for hours each day, and we all spent long evenings in the outdoor kitchen. If we had known how wonderful the property was, we would have cut out other parts of our trip to stay for an extra 3 days. Highly recommended by our family.
This home is spectacular and we had a whale of a time here. The listing and photos are accurate. Donna and Verne were very responsive and considerate. The property was clean and well maintained. The Kayak and boat were left out by the river for our use. We had so much fun in the river. The pristine, clean, and clear water was absolutely rejuvenating. We lit a fire in the fire pit in the outdoor kitchen area every night with the firewood we were provided with. I would recommend that you come well stocked with groceries for your stay on your way in and enjoy the facilities here.
This is a beautiful property that is maintained very well by the property owner. All the pictures accurately represent the vacation home in its current state. We found the furnishings to be welcoming and comforting. The outside kitchen area was fantastic. The stairs to the river were quite steep and placed at various heights which could be challenging for some people. We very much enjoyed our stay here. The property manager was responsive and attentive to our needs. The only negative we found to this rental house was its location. Unfortunately it was not mentioned that there are two major bridge construction projects happening on the only main road in and out of this property from 6a - 6p everyday except Sunday. The travel time into Crescent City is about 45 mins from the house and we were held up several times for an additional 30 mins at each bridge crossing which we found inconvenient. This house is great if you just go and stay there but not so convenient if you are planning to do day trips. The home is completely self- sufficient and relies on solar electricity. We were asked to avoid using high energy appliances (washer, dryer, etc.) at night time which was difficult since we were out most of the day and at the house in the evening. Again the house was amazing and it just depends on what your needs are during your stay as to whether this will be a good fit for your vacation plans.
I loved it here! My husband and sons and I just played for 7 days, morning till night. No cell service, no tv, and mostly candlelight was perfect and having the Wi-Fi we all still had a connection at home. It was 90 degrees plus the whole time and the swimming hole was a blast! I never cooked in the house so the outdoor kitchen and deck was my favorite. I highly recommend this for a family get away. Also, a bunch of wildlife, just something new everyday.
