Avignon Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cozy hideway in Provence for 2-8 guests

My home is a cozy 2-story cottage with calm dignity, situated on quiet street only a short walking distance from the charming village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, and only a 7-min. cab ride from the Avignon TGV 'bullet' Train Station. It's by design a modest place, full of simple pleasures, and seems like a little piece of paradise to me, with Spanish tile roof, thick walls covered in vine keeping you cool inside, and hand-crafted wrought iron pergolas over the front and back terraces for shade and quiet meals. Set back from the public street on a private driveway, the place is safe and private, convenient for coming and going, exploring Provencal landmarks and cultural attractions in Avignon, St. Remy, Orange, Arles or Nimes. In our village, there are open-air markets with magnificent fruits and vegetables, bakeries, pharmacy, post office, several cafés and some decent restaurants. There's also public bus transportation to and from Avignon. In back of the place is a 20-foot stone wall originally built in Medieval times that runs between my strawberry garden and a protected public park that is chock full of Mediterranean pines and olive trees, bathing everything in a serenity that's only interrupted by bird songs. The home has 2 floors, and each one is an independent living unit for 4 guests. The upstairs apartment has a master bedroom, study, living room, a full kitchen, and modern shower/bathroom with washing machine & private toilet. The downstairs apartment has a master bedroom, a full kitchen, a living room and modern shower/bathroom with washing machine & private toilet. Both apartments have flat-screen TVs with scores of stations available, including CNBC. All windows have been upgraded with double panes to resist the sometimes rowdy Mistral winds that blow down the Rhone Valley. There is wifi for the entire home which reaches both the front and back terraces for easy access. Picnic tables are set up on both terraces for intimate meals, day or night. The back terrace also includes a complete 'Roman' outdoor shower. The place is redolent with the aroma of thyme, laurel, lime blossom and pine. The home is ideally situated in the heart of Provence to explore all the region's cultural and culinary attractions or have a reflective home stay, cooking with great ingredients, listening to music, enjoying meals with family and friends on either of the home's shady terraces, not to mention cool siestas.

About Jerome Rudes

I am an American, with a French passport as well. I have undergraduate and graduate degrees from US universities, and now work in film post-production in New York, as well as a literary agent. As much as my busy professional life permits, I try to come back to my Provencal home for short, but always delightful stays.

Jerome Rudes purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Jerome Rudes chose Avignon

For many years, I lived year-round in my Provencal home before re-locating to the East Coast of the US because of professional obligations. The property is very special to me, as I trust it will be to my guests, because of its wonderful location next to a beautiful park and close to a lovely unblemished village that is proud of its heritage, and not far from state-of-the-art rail and air transportation. In sum, my home is situated in a seemingly magical location, blessed with a great macro-climate and tranquility, right in the heart of Provence!

What makes this cottage unique

Easy to come and go, all modern furnishings and appliances, quiet, safe surroundings, conveniently situated in the center of Provence, a wide variety of nearby restaurants and wineries to sample, plenty of cultural attractions, and a tranquil place to come home to, warm in cold months, cool in hot months.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely time! Your home and the area was just wonderful!

Thank you so much!

Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5
The cottage is located in Villeneuve-les-Avignon, an excellent location for exploring Provence and the Languedoc Regions of Southern France. The town is across the Rhone from Avignon. In fact, the Palais du Papes is visible from the front of this property. The cottage is situated between the Tower of Phillip the Fair and the village square. There are many excellent restaurants within a five minute walk. Though public transportation is available, we strongly suggest renting a car. The ground floor apartment is perfect for two people. There are plenty of additional sleeping options available but we did not utilize them. Though small, the kitchen is very well equipped with new appliances and plenty of pots, pans, utensils, etc. The front and rear gardens are perfect for watching the sun rise in the mornings and enjoying a glass of wine in the evenings. There is no air conditioning but this was no problem for our stay from late September to mid-October. We cannot wait to return next year.

Great time at a wonderful place

  • 5 of 5
We (2 children, 2 adults and a little dog) spend 2 weeks of our summer vacations at this beautiful place. We loved it from beginning – with the vine at the terraces and on the house, the olive trees, the oleander, rosemary, strawberries … Everything is made with tender and has its individual charm. We did not miss anything – only now we miss our holidays there.
The village also is beautiful – we enjoyed it to promenade through the narrow streets, the markets, to eat in one of the restaurants and we loved the Chartreuse. Middle Ages seem to be everywhere. In front of the house you have a great view over the roofs of the village … Villeneuve-les-Avignon is an ideal starting point for an immense number of natural, cultural and culinary attractions.
The communication with the owner was very good. A really friendly and trustful connection. We say thank you for everything – it was a great time at a wonderful place.

This Avignon villa is a little slice of heaven!

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at this Avignon abode was an absolute delight. I cannot say enough good things about it. Avignon is an inviting and quaint town that charmed us into never wanting to leave. This villa sits atop a breathtaking view of hilly, sun-drenched Provence and hosts a garden, strawberry patch, and lovely patio. A short walk down a winding, romantic street took us to the local farmer's market where smiling locals helped us pick out some savory delights. Mouth-watering fresh vegetables, meats, honeys and mustards awaited. Meals of fresh local delicacies and good wine on the terrace were relaxing and rejuvenating. We watched a movie and shared stories as night fell over lovely Avignon. I recalled the hours spent there in bed that night - I had barely closed my eyes as a soothing, satiated sleep fell over me.

Lovely place to enjoy provencal way of life

  • 5 of 5
We stayed 3 nights (2 adults and 2 children) for a wedding and enjoyed the peaceful of this lovely cottage and the vicinity of historical center town of Villeneuve les Avignon (very nice place). It's very close from Avignon and the Palais des Papes but we preferred and enjoyed to stay in this place for it real atmosphere of 'village provencal'. Highly recommended.

FORMIDABLE

Nous avons passé un mois formidable dans cette maison. La vue est magnifique. Le village aussi. Et la maison est très charmante. Nous avons dîné tous les soirs sous la tonnelle avec les cigales en bruit de fond, c'était délicieux.

Bliss in Provence

  • 5 of 5
I was fortunate to have my stay coincide with the owner's. So I had an occasional dinner and lunch companion as well as a very knowledgeable guide to send me off to the right spots. All in all, my stay in the ground floor apartment was very pleasant. The apt was clean and user-friendly and I look forward to returning.

This is the heart of Provence, perfect for discovering Avignon, St. Remy, Arles, Nimes, Marseille, Orange, and the Luberon. My place is located across the Rhone River from Avignon in a peaceful village next to a national park, which is full of Mediterranean pine trees and olive trees, blanketed by blissful silence. The local village is a 5-minute walk away, where there are open-air markets with magnificent fruits and vegetables, bakeries, a post office, several cafés and some decent restaurants. There's public transportation in the village as well to nearby Avignon, which is a major European cultural attraction, with museums, festivals, and live dance and music performances all year long.
