About Paul Hathaway

We are two nurses working hard and enjoying all that Northern California has to offer. We've lived in the Bay Area the last couple of decades sharing weekend explorations and meals with family and friends in the midst of the wonderful mix of cultures and physical beauty that is California.

Paul Hathaway purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Paul Hathaway chose Summerhome Park

For years we've thrived by enjoying the great outdoors of Northern California - from the parks near our home in Oakland, to the trails of Yosemite, to beach hikes along the Pacific Ocean. In time we settled on looking for our own vacation property in the Guerneville area as it is in the middle of much that we hold dear in life on the West Coast of Paradise. Over the last few years our real estate agent was patient enough to show us dozens of homes but none caught our desires till we saw Springhill Cabin. Here we can have no ambition, sit and read, write, drink wine and cook some great meals. Or we can decide to walk down to the river for a swim, or we can up our ambitions to drive to the ocean and climb a hill to watch the whales. Armstrong Redwood State Park provides great hikes. We can be wine tasting or antiquing in minutes, enjoy an exquisite dinner in unpretentious restaurants....and then head home to Springhill Cabin. How could we not want to have you enjoy this, too.

What makes this cabin unique

This is a Craftsman cabin with redwood paneling, a comfy reading nook/window seat with views into the trees. There is a hot tub under a Redwood fairy ring. A four minute walk takes you to our private community beach. The fully equipped kitchen rocks with an O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove, great butcher block and bright windows. There is a large gas grill outside the kitchen door. The bathroom has a claw foot tub and towel warmer. Oh, did we mention the air? It could not be any fresher than here. Convenient accommodations for wine country events, biking and triathlons, music festivals.

A perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I just returned from our second vacation at Springhill, and we're certain it will be a lifelong tradition to spend Christmas in the redwoods. While I'm sure Springhill is wonderful in the spring and summer, we love the crisp night air on the deck and the quiet serenity of the winter-time. The cabin is so thoughtfully outfitted. We spend most of our time cooking elaborate dinners in the wonderful kitchen, doing puzzles and playing games, and reading in every soft nook we can find. Paul and Lyn are responsive, kind and thoughtful. We can't recommend this cabin enough.

Wonderfully appointed rustic cabin in redwoods overlooking Russian River

  • 5 of 5

Owners of Springhill were very concerned for our satisfaction, very helpful and immediately responsive to our questions. Listing photos and description were spot-on. The charming cabin was immaculate and exceptionally cozy/comfortable (everything worked!). The owners should add photos of the romantic bedroom and the quaint bath to the listing. Kitchen was completely stocked with cooking and serving necessities, enabling the preparation of full course meals. Great grill, deck and fabulous hot tub under the canopy of towering redwoods. A soak while sipping wine after a day out-and-about the region, amid the scent of the redwoods and silence was the perfect way to unwind. The forest canopy keeps temperatures much cooler than the frequent 90 degree+ days in the region; but it also enables little sunshine to penetrate to the deck and cabin to warm cool mornings. Overall we were very pleased. Only drawbacks were the cramped shower in the claw-foot tub, minimal closet space for hanging clothes and the TV/DVD location/operation. Location: like Summerhome Park, the cabin is built into an extremely steep hillside with adjacent cabins all around. However the siting and dense forest creates a sense of privacy and solitude. Despite the density of development, we never felt cramped or bothered by other residents, although we were there off-season so many cabins were vacant and park activities had concluded for the year. The cabin and development are at the (dead)end of a mile-long, unlit, rough single lane road barely wider than a compact car, that twists and turns sharply up and down adjacent the river, so much so that the drive discouraged us from returning to the cabin after dark, especially after a dinner w/wine at a local restaurant. Good grocery stores, restaurants, canoe rental and dozens of Sonoma County wineries to visit for tastings within 30+ minutes. Napa (Calistoga) is about 75 minutes. Great hiking in Armstrong Redwood State Forest Preserve (20 minutes away) and along the coast between Jenner and Bodega Bay (about an hour away). Point Reyes National Seashore and Tomales Bay make an interesting day trip. Nearest towns for tourist shopping are Healdsburg (up-scale; 30 minutes); Guerneville and Sebastopol less so. So we found ourselves driving/relying on the car more than we had anticipated. For visitors from the Bay Area looking for a short interlude, Springhill cabin might be perfect. For longer stays, like ours, you'll probably rely on the car most days.

Owner's Response: Hi John, Thank you so much for your detailed and appreciative review. It was great to have you there Aside from the extremely positive things you had to say about Springhill Cabin You also note a couple things that guests should be aware of. That sense of isolation does come at the price of driving a mile along a rather curvy road on the quieter side of the Russian River. It sometimes narrows to single lane and there may be some people out walking. Slow down and take it in. The other point you made is so valid that it should be brought up more often! Sonoma County is full of the best wineries to be found, period. How does one deal with the enjoyment of such a place and still drive safely? Damn good question and not any easy answer for any place one might stay here. Lyn and I handle it by deciding in advance who will be the designated driver. That works for us but we live here so we have plenty of chances to enjoy it all. Some of our guests have taken wine tasting tours that will come to the cabin, pick them up for a carefree day of tasting, eating, sitting back and enjoying the wineries, and then being driven home to Springhill Cabin. Wherever one stays in Sonoma or Napa travelers and residents alike will face this dilemma: can we enjoy a bottle or two of wine at dinner and then drive? Thanks so much for bringing up this issue for all of us. Our suggestion is enjoy a night out with moderation and save those bottles of wine for the excellent dinners you’ll make at Springhill (corkage free….) We look forward to your return! Paul and Lyn

Perfect for Couple Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Awesome little cabin retreat perfect couples. We spent two nights here for our anniversary and couldn't have imagined a better place to stay. It has everything you need for a nice weekend away from home. My only problem is that we should have stayed 3 nights instead of 2 so we could have enjoyed the property more.

Wonderful Place

This place has fabulous charm: rustic with elegant touches. We loved cooking in the kitchen and on the grill. The jacuzzi under the canopy of redwoods was wonderful too. Overall just the "home away from home" we needed.

beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely place in a beautiful location. The place is spotless, and the owners have done a great job setting everything up so nicely with everything you'll need for a quiet getaway with access to the Russian River valley. We would love to go back again!

One thing to note: there are a lot of steps, both to the house and also to the beach, so if that's an issue this place may not be your first choice.

Owner's Response: Rachel, Thanks for your very complimentary review. We hope you can make it back soon. ....and yes, this is a house on a hill with a stairway to climb. Generally this is no problem but those with mobility issues should be aware and ask us for more information about this when making a reservation.

Redwoods Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to "get away from it all" and not have to go that far. Summer Home Park is kind of a rabbit's warren of windy, narrow (one lane) roads that ascend and descend among towering redwoods above Russian River. Indeed, the drive in to the cabin makes one plan ahead and grateful to find the lovely parking pad and the quiet of the forest. The cabin was perfect for two of us, with plenty of privacy, tastefully appointed and a kitchen that exudes immense charm, with all the modern amenities. The deck is perfection for just sitting back and soaking in the surroundings--and the quiet. The furnishings are lush and comfortable. The owners left easy directions to things like the TV system, the grill, etc. We couldn't have been more content with our choice. Then, there's location--such an easy drive to the coast, or inland to the many charming towns and vinyards. On a hot day, the beaches of Russian River beckon and many answer the call. Long and short of it--we thoroughly enjoyed this redwoods retreat and all it had to offer.
