About Samantha Guerry

After years of living near DC, we were ready to get back to the quiet of the countryside--even if it wasn't full time. We also wanted our son to know the pleasures of a country community---the immense freedom and pleasures of the woods and fields.

Samantha Guerry purchased this chateau / country house in 1994

Why Samantha Guerry chose Etlan / Old Rag Mountain

We fell in love with this valley over 23 years ago when we came to Graves Mt. Lodge for a weekend. We found this property in 1992 and designed our dream house to go with it. We've created the gardens up and sense of place out of our vision of the ideal country life.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our home is only 90miles from DC--a short and mostly beautiful 1.75 hr drive--also only 35 miles from Charlottesville/UVA.

It's just close enough to be satisfying for an overnight and just long enough to feel a LOT further away. This is a place you can really get away from it all! (BTW, cells phones don't work here--but we do have wifi for texting/email.)

Girls' weekend getaway from the DC

Girls' weekend getaway from the DC

Eight of my girl friends stayed at the Lodge this past weekend and it was great. I picked up groceries as I passed through Warrenton, which was pretty much the last place to have grocery chains. When I arrived at the house, it was even more perfect than I had imagined. It is truly a beautiful lodge in the mountains. The house was well stocked with every amenity for cooking. There were eggs from the chickens already in the fridge and in the morning, we gathered another 7 from the chickens. The hot tub was also ready when we arrived. It is a short distance from the house, so bring flip flops and a robe if it is going to be cold. As we had been warned, cell phone service was pretty much non-existent, although we could use the wifi for email and such. There was extra firewood near the shed so we pretty much had a fire running the entire weekend. We went for a hike at the Oak Falls, which was suggested in our welcome pack. The drive to the trail was only about 10 minutes and the hike was perfect. There is a $15 car fee to park there so make sure to bring cash. The rest of the weekend was great. There were beds for 6 people, and then 3 "day beds," that were mostly oversized day cushions so I would recommend bringing an air mattress if you have more than 6 people. There were plenty of blankets in the house, but bring extra sheets for the day beds/air mattresses. I would also recommend bring extra towels if you plan to use the hot tub.

Wonderful property in a truly spectacular location

My wife and I spent three wonderful days here. The house is beautiful and the views from the great room are stunning. It is a wonderful place to get away from the stresses of everyday life.

Our hobby is bicycle riding and the riding in this area is truly spectacular. Beautiful scenery and very light traffic.

All in all, this house and area are incredible finds. We highly recommend this house to others. We will be back again and again.

Really, really lovely house

  • 5 of 5
The house and setting were gorgeous. Everything was in great working order. The gardens were beautiful and the kids loved collecting the eggs in the mornings. The beds were comfortable and so were all the comfy chairs to read and rest. The owner was very nice, helping us decide on the right things to do for our group. She was very responsive. Perfect!

Great place to escape for the weekend. The house is beautiful a very close to several hikes and vineyards. The large kitchen and eating area are great for family meals. Don't miss out on the fresh eggs!

Birthday Weekend

  • 5 of 5
We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday weekend at Rag Mountain Lodge with my teenage sons. What a beautiful home! The pictures are accurate. It is also very comfortable. My son, the philosophy major, enjoyed the great book selection. I could have spent a long time just sitting on the porch and reading the books. The kitchen was well stocked and my 18 year old enjoyed collecting eggs each day - something he had never had a chance to do before!. The surrounding area has lots to do. We took a nice hike and would love to come back at another time of year to enjoy the great biking and porch sitting.

Exactly perfect

  • 5 of 5
To celebrate the end of winter, I invited a few friends from North Carolina, Ohio, and DC to join me hiking the Old Rag trail. We stayed at this excellent and beautiful house. Everyone on the trip loved the experience. Among the highlights:
-we made good use of the well stocked kitchen, cooked all our meals, and ate around the pillowed bench in the kitchen or the patio overlooking the valley and mountains,
-we used fresh eggs from the chickens there for breakfast,
-we woke up early and collected the eggs too (you don't have to if you don't want to, but we thought it was cool),
-the beds were soft and the sheets were well made and warm,
-we set the trip to music using the sound system with speakers mounted throughout the house,
-we played board games around the fireplace, using firewood that had been collected behind the shed,
-we had a cookout one night on the charcoal grill,
-we lounged around on the rocking chairs and on the hammock on the patio,
-and we soaked our sore Old Rag muscles in the hot tub.
This is a wonderful house. We are grateful for the experience of staying there, and we hope to be able to do the trip again next year.

When the road ends, adventure begins! Drive, bike or ride a short way west on any road in our valley and you will be in the Shenandoah National Park. Hike Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon. Cool off in local waterfalls. Fish the beautiful heritage waters of the Robinson and Rose Rivers---or take your little ones to the stocked trout pond to let them catch some dinner.

If you just want to relax, you can curl up in our hammock for that overdue nap, take a swim in our community lake (just a short walk down the hill) or just pass the day on a raft reading and counting the hawks that fly overhead.

Our valley is home to the Graves Mountain Lodge, which hosts the nationally known Annual BlueGrass Festival, the autumn Apple Festivals, and many other wonderful events. If you don't feel like cooking, just drop in at Graves for a homestyle meal served family style in their lodge overlooking the mountains.

If you love horses, you can join a ride out of their stable or board your own horses in their stable space right at the foot of our hill. There are hundreds of miles of trails through fields and forests--you can go all the way to Skyline Drive from here.

For cyclists, our backroads are some of the most beautiful and least traveled in the region and the Double Top Wilderness area has lots of great mountain bike trails to take in as well.

So much to do in every season!
