OLD RAG MT LODGE OVERLOOKING MOUNTAINS & ORCHARDS

Etlan / Old Rag Mountain Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Sunny, Private Country Estate with Mountain Views and Lush Gardens

Whether you want serenity or adventure, this house has it all! This sunny Adirondack style home sits high up overlooking hundreds of acres of Apple orchards, forests, and mountains.

You can't beat our location! Hiking, fishing, festivals, biking, winery tours, waterfalls, apple picking, and more...all right here. You can walk or ride for miles right off our property. The Trout Heritage Waters of the Robinson River lay at our feet. Old Rag and White Oak Canyon are just up the road. Next door, the Graves Mountain Lodge offers horseback riding, hayrides, music festivals, camps, and a full service, country style restaurant.

Our great room soars 33' with a stone fireplace and looks out on the mountains. Wrap around porches with rocking chairs and a hammock await you. Curl up with a book, watch hummingbirds feed in our extensive gardens, or visit with friends and family. From every angle, you'll enjoy great views of sunrises, sunsets, and starry-skies.

Chicken coop on site. Fresh eggs laid daily! Imagine starting your day with a fluffy omelet in a light-filled window seat!

Hot-tub after a fun day hiking Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon and then tuck in under cozy flannel comforters for the quietest night sleep you can imagine.

A master bedroom, second bedroom, and studio office are on the second floor--all brimming with light, hickory log furniture, and charm. There are large window seats that serve as extra sleeping space and a shared full bath.

The first floor is handicap accessible via a ramp from the driveway--not ADA compliant.

After years of living near DC, we were ready to get back to the quiet of the countryside--even if it wasn't full time. We also wanted our son to know the pleasures of a country community---the immense freedom and pleasures of the woods and fields.

Samantha Guerry purchased this chateau / country house in 1994

We fell in love with this valley over 23 years ago when we came to Graves Mt. Lodge for a weekend. We found this property in 1992 and designed our dream house to go with it. We've created the gardens up and sense of place out of our vision of the ideal country life.

Our home is only 90miles from DC--a short and mostly beautiful 1.75 hr drive--also only 35 miles from Charlottesville/UVA.

It's just close enough to be satisfying for an overnight and just long enough to feel a LOT further away. This is a place you can really get away from it all! (BTW, cells phones don't work here--but we do have wifi for texting/email.)

REALLY, REALLY LOVELY HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
The house and setting were gorgeous. Everything was in great working order. The gardens were beautiful and the kids loved collecting the eggs in the mornings. The beds were comfortable and so were all the comfy chairs to read and rest. The owner was very nice, helping us decide on the right things to do for our group. She was very responsive. Perfect!

BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

  • 5 of 5
We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday weekend at Rag Mountain Lodge with my teenage sons. What a beautiful home! The pictures are accurate. It is also very comfortable. My son, the philosophy major, enjoyed the great book selection. I could have spent a long time just sitting on the porch and reading the books. The kitchen was well stocked and my 18 year old enjoyed collecting eggs each day - something he had never had a chance to do before!. The surrounding area has lots to do. We took a nice hike and would love to come back at another time of year to enjoy the great biking and porch sitting.

EXACTLY PERFECT

  • 5 of 5
To celebrate the end of winter, I invited a few friends from North Carolina, Ohio, and DC to join me hiking the Old Rag trail. We stayed at this excellent and beautiful house. Everyone on the trip loved the experience. Among the highlights:
-we made good use of the well stocked kitchen, cooked all our meals, and ate around the pillowed bench in the kitchen or the patio overlooking the valley and mountains,
-we used fresh eggs from the chickens there for breakfast,
-we woke up early and collected the eggs too (you don't have to if you don't want to, but we thought it was cool),
-the beds were soft and the sheets were well made and warm,
-we set the trip to music using the sound system with speakers mounted throughout the house,
-we played board games around the fireplace, using firewood that had been collected behind the shed,
-we had a cookout one night on the charcoal grill,
-we lounged around on the rocking chairs and on the hammock on the patio,
-and we soaked our sore Old Rag muscles in the hot tub.
This is a wonderful house. We are grateful for the experience of staying there, and we hope to be able to do the trip again next year.

WONDERFUL WEEKEND IN SYRIA

  • 5 of 5
What a gorgeous home this was to stay in. Nice furnishings and handmade pieces, along with a huge library of books made for a nice weekend of relaxing. The property and views are lovely and my girls (ages 12 and 8) loved collecting eggs each morning of our stay. The caretaker of the cottage called each day to check in and see if there was anything we needed, which was a nice touch. The home was located off the beaten path but not too far away from the little towns where we went apple picking and shopping. The roadside diner in Syria was a good stop to pickup food and the home has plenty of local information to help plan outings. The state park a few mile up the road had well marked trails and a small 'waterfall' to enjoy after walking for a bit. Both adults and kids enjoyed climbing the rocks. Enjoyed our stay and highly recommend.

PROPERTY TITLE WAS VERY ACCURATE IN ITS DESCRIPTION.

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I decided for Christmas to give our adult children the gift of quality family time. As we looked for an escape from the daily grind and hustle and bustle for all of us, a large part of our decision on chosing a rental cabin, was determined by its level of connectivity; the more connectivity, the further down the option list it went. Although, the cabin came with wifi, there was no cellular service or television - PERFECT!

The cabin was simply amazing and provided the family with an environment that we all needed in order to unplug from society and focus on the family during Christmas. The cabin offered all the features of home away from home in a very open and user friendly fashion. It was spacious, clean, well decorated and equipped with everything one would need from home. The cabin immediately felt like "home" upon entering. It was very apparent to all in my family, this cabin was built not for the monetary profit it could provide, but rather to provide the owners solitude among nature's beauty. And in doing so, the owners decided to share their slice of heaven with others to enjoy too!

Communication with the owner was prompt, friendly and very helpful. The house and grounds keepers live nearby and are very pleasant and amazing people who make you feel like you've known them for years.

The highlights of our stay at the cabin was time shared preparing and enjoying meals, sitting around the fireplace laughing and talking, feeding and gathering eggs from the chickens, and soaking in the hot tub underneath the evening stars. I am proud to say, we never left the cabin in a vehicle once we arrived.

I would definately recommend this rental property to anyone interested in escaping the daily grind. Everything from the intial property description on VRBO to writing this review was nothing short of amazing! We'll be coming back...

When the road ends, adventure begins! Drive, bike or ride a short way west on any road in our valley and you will be in the Shenandoah National Park. Hike Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon. Cool off in local waterfalls. Fish the beautiful heritage waters of the Robinson and Rose Rivers---or take your little ones to the stocked trout pond to let them catch some dinner.

If you just want to relax, you can curl up in our hammock for that overdue nap, take a swim in our community lake (just a short walk down the hill) or just pass the day on a raft reading and counting the hawks that fly overhead.

Our valley is home to the Graves Mountain Lodge, which hosts the nationally known Annual BlueGrass Festival, the autumn Apple Festivals, and many other wonderful events. If you don't feel like cooking, just drop in at Graves for a homestyle meal served family style in their lodge overlooking the mountains.

If you love horses, you can join a ride out of their stable or board your own horses in their stable space right at the foot of our hill. There are hundreds of miles of trails through fields and forests--you can go all the way to Skyline Drive from here.

For cyclists, our backroads are some of the most beautiful and least traveled in the region and the Double Top Wilderness area has lots of great mountain bike trails to take in as well.

So much to do in every season!
