CHATEAU DE LA BRETAUCHE: LIVING IN A CASTLE WITH FRENCH FLAIR

Combleux Apartment Rental Photos and Description

1 BR / 1 BA - sleeps 4 - Orléans # 457445

Location: Orléans, Loire Valley /centre of France (1 hour away from Paris, France, Europe View Map

Accommodations: apartment in an 18th century castle, 1 bedroom, 1 living room with convertible double bed sofa, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen (sleeps 2 - 4)

If you want to experience la vie de château, this is the place to come! This cosy quiet apartment is actually in a real castle located in a park on the outskirts of the historic city of Orléans. The Loire River is only 5 minutes away, making it a perfect place to stay for a cycling experience along the Loire. The property is also only an hour from Paris by train, so it’s easy to plan a day trip into the city. Or there are all of the castles in the Loire Valley to explore, many of which are easily accessible during a day trip from the castle. There are also many wineries in the Loire Valley, as well as quaint little towns like Gien, where there is an outlet store for their famous china factory. To the south is the Sologne forest and there are many lakes in the area—it really is a paradise for nature lovers. It is centrally located to reach any place of interest really.

THE ATMOSPHERE

It’s like a dream come true - living in a real castle! Château de la Bretauche is in itself a beautiful place, with lovely French gardens, classical architecture, a grand staircase and a friendly atmosphere and community. Even though it is only a few minutes’ walk from the center of the small town of Boigny-sur-Bionne, it is quiet, in the midst of a large lawn, orchard, and private park. It is easy to relax in the peace and quiet of the estate and the nearby countryside, but it is just as easy to enjoy the pleasures of shopping, as there is a shopping mall only 10 minutes away. Whether it’s the visits to Paris and Orléans or the quiet walks in the woods that tempt you, you will love Château de la Bretauche.

DESCRIPTION OF THE APARTMENT

You access the apartment through the front door of the castle, small-paned white French double doors, which open onto an entry lobby where the mailboxes are located. There is a second glass door which is always locked for the privacy and security of the inhabitants. Once inside, a stunning wooden staircase leads to the second floor, where you will find a smaller staircase that leads to the apartment on the third floor. This used to be the back stairway for the staff.

The apartment consists of four main rooms. Off the corridor, there is a living room on the left-hand side with a sitting/sleeping area as well as an eating area. Right in front of the apartment door, there is a small kitchen with totally new appliances and a fold-away table. On the right-hand side, there is a bedroom with a king-size bed and a bathroom with a brand-new shower, a sink and a toilet. The bathroom is accessible from the bedroom AND from the corridor, making it very convenient.

THE PARK

The park and lawn of the château can provide you with quiet, private walks. It takes about 20 minutes to walk around the park following the walking paths. There is an eating/picnic area located at the rear of the building near the château’s orchard in the shade of large trees, reserved just for residents and you are welcome to have breakfast, lunch or dinner there. There is a romantic table and chairs, as well as lounge chairs you can use to sunbathe in peace and quiet, away from anyone’s view. Two picnic baskets are ready to use in the kitchen to carry your eating utensils, food and drinks.

THE VILLAGE NEARBY

If you take the grassy path running through the trees at the entrance of the park, it is easy to go and buy croissants, pains au chocolat and French baguettes directly at the nearby bakery, which is within a 5 minute walk. There is everything close at hand: a restaurant (next door to the bakery, on the other side of the street), and a few steps further a small SPAR supermarket, a butcher, a pharmacy, a gas station, a hairdresser, a stationary, a gift shop and a post office.

We wish you a wonderful stay !!!

About Mrs Sylvie GOUCHET

We are both language teachers born in France. Olivier is crazy about Germanic languages and teaches German in a preparatory school in Orléans, which serves students who want to pursue post-secondary studies focused on business and humanities. Sylvie teaches English in a preparatory school in Orléans for students who want to pursue a degree in business. We have travelled around the world and have discovered many different countries, and we love Scandinavia, Germany and the United States. Our children are globetrotters too, our daughter lives in Berlin, our elder son in Norway and our youngest son is still at home.

We live not very far from the Château de la Bretauche, in the forest of Orléans where we have a log cabin home. We live with our four cats and our two Norwegian fjord ponies. See the picture attached.

Mrs Sylvie GOUCHET purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Mrs Sylvie GOUCHET chose Combleux

We bought this property because we fell in love with the place !! We have always had many friends at the house in the summer, and we had always planned to have a second home for our friends from around the world, as well as for our children to come and visit for longer periods of time. We would like you to feel like our friends in the apartment in La Bretauche, like our guests!! This is why we have taken such care in renovating and preparing the apartment—just for you.

The Château de la Bretauche was built at the beginning of the 18th century. It was first the dwelling place of Daniel-François Legrande de Melleray, the councellor and intendent of finance for the Duke of Orléans during the Regency period. Later on, up until the late 70s, it became a nunnery where nuns spent a life of seclusion together with a vow of silence. The place, however, retains none of these austere features, but shares the beautiful appearance of a soothing and restful spot.

What makes this apartment unique

As you arrive, you have a breathtaking view of the 18th century castle as you pass the hedge and enter the private park. It makes you feel as if you are in the middle of the history of France. In the apartment, we have tried to recreate a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere to give every visitor the feel of French culture, with classical furniture along with the comfort of a modern kitchen and bathroom. A view from the apartment windows (3rd floor) provides yet another visual pleasure, looking out over the front of the park and the grand entrance to the castle. The windows flood the apartment with light and in the summer the rays of the evening sun invade the rooms. While it is sunny and filled with light, the apartment is not too warm as the insulation above the apartment provides ample shelter in the summer. During your stay, we hope to surprise you with plenty of little details and surprises, as we truly want to make your stay at Château de la Bretauche an outstanding and exceptional part of your vacation.

If you will be visiting Amboise, check out this beautiful two bedroom apartment with one and a half baths: VRBO #397969. The owners are friends and the apartment is beautiful, tell them Sylvie sent you.

Great countryside experience, not far from the city

  • 5 of 5
Our week at Chateau De La Bretauche was a great experience.

The Chateau was converted into an apartment building. It is surrounded by a very pleasant, well kept estate with a lot of character. The apartment itself is convenient and well equipped.

Checy, a small village with a boulangerie and a supermarket is within a nice 15 minute walk (or 3 minute drive). It also has a stream with a picnic spot.

Orleans is close by and can be reached in about 15 minutes either through the freeway or by driving along the Loire.

The owner, Sylvie, is very nice and helpful.

Life in a Castle

  • 5 of 5
This Castle is as described near a small forest which leads into a nice little village. The accommodation is lovely a nice view from your top floor over the forest area. The bed was comfortable the bathroom having been renovated was lovely with a great shower. The kitchen is excellent with a full fridge oven and washing machine. The contact we had with the owner was also excellent prior to and upon arrival and she helped with shopping locations. Plenty of car parking and a rear garden you can use if you wish. Would recommend this place for a great stay.

Absolutely perfect

  • 5 of 5
I have just read the other reviews and ditto to everything. The apartment has everything you need plus some. For example, Sylvie even had an absolutely lovely dinner waiting for us on our late arrival. Where else would you get that? For 2 couples, the place is also excellent because the bathroom and kitchen are separate so it ends up like being a 2 bedroom place once you retire. Sylvie is an enthusiastic, darling lady, with impecable English, so she was able to give us all the advice we needed regarding what to do in the area. We have absolutely nothing negative to say. Be sure to arrange how to gain access before you arrive. Exchanging cell phone numbers is the key. (Be aware that there are 2 flights of stairs to carry luggage.) Oh, our GPS took us to the property next to this one where we sat for 20 minutes until we realized it was the wrong place. Look for the picture of the chateaux as shown at the top of this page.

Royal Treatment in a Castle

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 4 had a wonderful stay in the Chateau de La Bretauche. The apartment itself was much larger than we expected it to be and the owner has done a lovely decorating job with many fun flairs.
The Chess game was a huge hit and was put to good use. We were able to prepare a lovely dinner and eat in around the family friendly table. The bathroom is huge and new and modern - very unexpected in a 300 year old castle. The grounds are large and well cared for and beg to be used for a soccer match or picnic. We were sad that we could not stay longer. It is truly and wonderful place. One caveat would be that we have several in our family who suffer from allergies and asthma and there are some smokers and cat owners in the building so symptoms of asthma began as soon as they walked up the stairs to the suite.

A Beautiful Gem!

  • 5 of 5
Staying at La Bretauche was like being in our own private chateau--we felt like royalty. The apartment is absolutely beautiful, very elegant, and very functional, with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. We loved the little village and think the bakery is one of the best we have visited (their bread is outstanding as are their quiches and other baked goods). We walked to Combleux (about 30 minutes) and had an outstanding lunch at Le Restaurant de la Marine, we highly recommend it. Overall, La Bretauche provides for a restful and relaxing vacation while also having all the amenities for an outstanding stay. The chateau, the apartment, and the grounds are absolutely magnificent, as are the owners. We will DEFINITELY be back!

Three months in France

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I decided to spend three months living in France, to improve our French language skills and just for a complete change. We are at Chateau de la Bretauche for one month. We are already half way through our time here, and it is flying. The apartment is absolutely lovely, brand new kitchen with all new appliances, lots of room to make what ever you fancy. There is also a brand new bathroom with a very large shower, ahh. The bathroom has doors that lead to the hallway as well as the bedroom, which makes it very convent. The bed is very comfortable which is always a plus. My favourite place in the apartment is the sitting area, all of the rooms have windows that open into them, but the sitting room has a perfect window that gets the sun of the late afternoon, a perfect place to sit with a glass of wine and a good book. We have been able to visit many chateaux, all within very short drives. There are hiking and biking trails all over. Most communities have weekly markets, and the best baguettes, in my estimation are a short walk through the woods, you will also find a small grocery store and a restaurant. The owners are very kind and helpful with anything that you might need. So if you are looking for a quiet place close to pretty much everything, then this is a perfect place.

Car: recommended

Halfway between the wine areas of Touraine (to the west) and Sancerre to the east), 15 minutes away from the historical town of Joan of Arc (read below), one hour away from Paris, less than an hour away from the chateaux of the Loire Valley, a few minutes away from the river Loire itself, La Bretauche is ideally located for tourists, wine and food or sport lovers.

If you want to kow more about transports : La Bretauche is in the town of Chécy, close to the small town of Boigny-sur-Bionne, just 15 minutes away from Orléans by car.

Orléans is the town of Joan of Arc, and there is a lot to see (the statue of Joan of Arc, her house - which is also a museum). May 7th in the evening, you will be able to witness the cathedral being illuminated in red smoke, and May 8th is a big Joan of Arc festival with a parade, with an army parade in the afternoon and fireworks in the evening.

To reaching the castle, rental cars are available from Orléans-Les Aubrais train station, they are easy to book in advance - by the Internet or even if you ask us.

There is an direct 1-hour train connection from Paris Austerlitz station. Get off preferably at Orléans Centre (and not at Les Aubrais-Orléans).

From there, there is a tram + bus public transport from Orléans downtown / Orléans station, (about 40 minutes).

There is a map and guide in the apartment to help you discover the area. We can send you everything you need in advance.

Taxi service can be booked beforehand; the castle is only 15 minutes from Orléans train station. Again, we can book a taxi service for you. The taxi driver will hold a sign with your name(s) on it and drive you to the castle.

All directions will be provided in due time and will be easy to follow.
