The apartment is part of a purpose-built duplex constructed in 1892 in a residential enclave bordered by the bank of the Rideau River (at Wurtemburg St.), St. Patrick St. and Cobourg St. The area is increasingly referred to as Macdonald Gardens because it encompasses the historic Macdonald Gardens Park.

473 Clarence is an extremely walkable location: Parliament Hill, the Central Business District, the University of Ottawa, the historic Byward Market, the National Gallery, DFAIT, DND HQ, Rideau Falls, Rideau Hall and other destinations can easily be reached in less than 30 minutes on foot in any weather.

I live in the downstairs apartment with my family and I work for the Parliament of Canada. Originally from Vancouver,British Columbia, we moved to Ottawa 10 years ago and love it.

I like to get places on foot and this location is perfect. The downtown CBD is 30 mins of walking. Governor General's and Rideau Falls are 30 mins in the other direction. Byward Market is 15 and New Edinburgh village is 15 the other way.

We love the neighbourhood. Is is a quiet downtown suburb: close to everything with a mix of families and young professionals. We moved to this property in order to have some 'fun' gutting and renovating an old building.

This apartment is beautifully laid out with large dining and living rooms as well as three bedrooms nicely spaced out in separate corners of the apartment. The large, private, covered, balcony is a gorgeous place to sit and have a coffee or glass of wine in any weather. There are windows on every side of the house so the light is always streaming in somewhere.

PERFECT FOR KIDS

We stayed for a week with our 3 year old and 9 month old after spending 5 days in a Montreal hotel. Allison's apartment was truly a home away from home for us. It was stocked with all the necessities for kids, including a play kitchen (my daughter called this the house with two kitchens), high chair, double stroller, books and toys. The location is close enough to the major attractions that we could walk (but far enough that the stroller was needed for the 3 yr old). The apartment was clean, comfortable and big enough that we could host visiting friends. The next time we're in Ottawa we'll certainly try to stay here again.

EXCELLENT HOME BASE FOR DOWNTOWN OTTAWA

We booked this property for a little getaway with our adult children. The apartment was spotlessly clean and quirkily decorated, which we loved. It was a comfortable place to call 'home' while we explored downtown Ottawa on foot and on bicycle.

Allison left the kitchen well-stocked for us and was quick to respond to emails.

There were 2 grocery stores within easy walking distance, as was the best gelato shop in Byward Market (Piccolo Grande).

The only downside was just one bathroom, but between the four adults who stayed there, we didn't have any problem making it work.

My husband kept saying " this is the best Home Away we ever stayed at" and we have stayed at quite a few. The place was spotless. There was off street parking for us. When we arrived there was breakfast, pasta, spagettie sauce, salad dressing, spices, juice, milk, and bread. Allison our hostess even got soy milk for us. Don't go shopping before you stop by the apartment. There are grocery stores in the area.
We had 2 families with us and a 3 year old. Allison thought of everything, there was a porta crib, high chair, booster seat, tons of clean toys.
There is a large dinning room table so we had family dinners there. We were there to meet our newest grandson.
The decor is modern, the appliances are new, Allison even supplied the laundry detergent for the convenient washer and dryer. The bedrooms are separated from each other so there is plenty of privacy, there is also a nice porch for warmer weather.
Our security deposit was returned promptly.
Thank you Allison for the great stay we will be back when visiting family in the area. I like taking credit for finding "the best Home Away we have ever stayed at"

I really love hearing that families have had a wonderful time staying in this apartment. I am always adding things to the apartment to make my guests - young and old - more comfortable. It's very rewarding to know that my efforts are working!
Of course the apartment has its own charms, like the well-spaced bedrooms and beautiful balcony, but I added the high-quality beds, linens and furnishings because it makes being away from home more of a treat.
I stock the apartment with nice coffee, teas, fruit and other fresh grocery items so that my guests do not *have to* shop for groceries right away. There are always supplies to make an emergency dinner on arrival.
There are six new bathrobes in the apartment and I have started including a stock of my favourite Aveda toiletries in the bathroom for my guests' convenience.
Many reviewers have mentioned how clean the apartment is. My standards are very high and my housekeeper, Julie, is amazingly thorough. It's really nice that people notice.

This apartment is excellent, as described, ideal for a family visit to Ottawa, and more than met our expectations. It is close to downtown/market area (walkable in reasonable weather), situated in a quiet neighbourhood, with good walks and shopping nearby. We appreciated the details, the comfortable beds and furniture, the well-equipped kitchen. The breakfast supplies were a boon.
We visited with 5 family members (adults) and felt very much at home. I would recommend this most highly and plan to return. Many thanks!
