Very handsome couple, married for 45 years! Two grown up sons, two lovely daughters in law and five school age grandchildren.

America Cottage is called such because it is on the West side of the water...well that is what we tell people although we are still unsure. Colin's parents had the bungalow built for somebody to help them in the grounds and the garden.

We lived in America Cottage when we first got married, with Colin's parents living in the 'big house'. America Cottage is light and sunny, with oodles of space and just a nice place to be. When the sun shines it is very lovely to sit out on the porch and sunbathe without anybody seeing you. The real charm of America Cottage is it is close to Edinburgh, on a bus route (however, a car is necessary), and withinone mile of the Village of West Linton which has huge attractiveness, loads of sops, everything yu could wish for without any of the hassle. The ville communityis a very friendly one and in June there is a ten day Festival called the Whipman Play which celebrates the life of the village and surrounding area by Riding of the Marches. Super fun for the children and adults alike (usually held during first week of June). Many of our visitors over the years have moved to the area or not far away.

Enchanted stay

  • 5 of 5
We (I, my daughter, age 10, my son, age 15, and his friend, also age 15) stayed a week at America Cottage on the grounds of Slipperfield House in the village of West Linton. The cottage was comfortable, cheerful, and furnished in a cozy and charming style (loved the coal scuttle--functional as well as decorative!), the kitchen well-equipped for one who prefers to do her own cooking while on holiday, only eating out occasionally. The grounds around the cottage were enchanting--dark evergreen forest carpeted in needles, a smallish loch surrounded by shrubs and tall grasses, a huge meadow nearby with shaggy cattle grazing peacefully. We spent an entire afternoon just wandering around the grounds and feeding said cattle handfuls of grass one day when two of the children had colds and stuffy noses and didn't feel like making the trip into Edinburgh. Carol and Colin Kilpatrick were the soul of hospitality, finding us bus schedules, offering to drive us into the village, or to pick up groceries for us. We took the bus into Edinburgh nearly every day, and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery on the way. I and the children had a wonderful time and dream of coming back some day.

Owner's Response: We try and make all our visitors feel extremely welcome, and to feel part of the Slipperfield family. We are delighted to assist in any way we can if we possibly can. We count ourselves lucky to meet so many lovely friends and visitors, and we are also fortunate to live in a beautiful part of Scotland which is close enough to Edinburgh and the surrounding Borders countryside.

Car: necessary

An ideal base for touring the beautiful Scottish Borders, with its Abbeys and Tweed Valley. Edinburgh with its festivals is an easy drive away. Take the open top bus tour to see the whole of this magnificent city, visit Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, visit the Museum of Edinburgh for free, or visit the wonderful Royal Yacht Britannia, a must and suitable for all ages. The Pentland Hills are on the doorstep for hillwalking, horse riding, fishing and golf. Mountain biking at Peebles 20 minutes away. Rosslyn Chapel, Traquair House, Biggar, which has terrific shops and easy parking, and The Clyde Valley all nearby, The cottage is set in a magical hideaway private estate with fantastic wildlife such as osprey and otter, roe deer and badgers. Fishing by fly for trout is available on your own private Slipperfield Loch during the summer months from a boat (lifejackets must be worn). Or, from here you can go further afield and enjoy days out to St. Andrews, East Lothian beaches, or go to the Harrods of the North, the House of Bruar just beyond Pitlochry in the Highlands. West Linton Village, just over a mile away, has a wonderful range of shops from where one may buy all one's needs, with a pub, a restaurant, tea-room, gift shop, post office, chemist and delicatessen. A warm welcome awaits and dogs are welcome,(two maximum). Car essential. Loch Cottage is a five minute walk away down the lakeside.

Other Activities: Edinburgh Festival

Golf: West Linton has a championship 18 hole golf course, which is very popular, five minutes away by car. There are many varied and interesting golf courses nearby also, and two great practice golf ranges on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Ski: There is a plastic ski-slope at Hillend, about four miles from Edinburgh City Centre and 15 miles from West Linton within the Pentland Regional Park. This is good fun for children wishing to either learn how to ski, or to practice their skills on the slopes.
