In 1933, the Poudre Valley was enduring years of drought and dust storms and the farmers began realizing the need for more water to satisfy the thrist of the crop-bearing farms around Fort Collins. Knowing the water from the Poudre River was inconsistent, somtimes providing too much and at other times not enough, Horsetooth Reservoir was developed to solve the problem.

The reservoir acquired its name from the unique rock formation that sits above the large body of water. There is an old Native American legend regarding theis famous stone. The Valley of Contentment (today's Horsetooth Reservoir) was once guarded by a giant so that no buffalo, deer or antelope were hunted in the valley. Cheif Maunamoku led Indians to slay the giant. In killing the giant, the Chief slashed at his heart first in the center then on the right and then on the left with a tomahawk from the heavens. The next day the giant turned to stone and is now known as Horsetooth Rock.

Today, the 6.5-mile reservoir is a favorite recreation spot for activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, sailing and picnicking. There are many miles of trails here for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking. Additionally, on the east side of the reservoir is one of the best spots in Colorado for bouldering.

Horsetooth Reservoir is open year-round and included RV spots, campsites, and cabins, all managed by Larimer County Natural Areas. If camping isn't your style, relax in one of the condos or bed & breakfasts in the area and rent a boat at the local marina.

Horsetooth Reservoir with a Great View!

  • 5 of 5
This rental was well suited to our needs and had a spectacular view of the Horsetooth Reservoir. We saw lots of wildlife including rabbits, mule deer, and a very friendly neighbor's dog named Kiva who visited us every day. I highly recommend this rental to anyone considering staying in the Fort Collins area.

Christmas time family reunion

  • 5 of 5
We spent 5 days between holidays in your wonderful home. The home was warm and cozy. We had great time playing games, cooking, eating and sightseeing. We even took a hike on nearby trails.
Website pictures accurately reflect the rental appearance. House is very clean and roomy. I would recommend this house for my friends and relatives. We haven't had any major problems. With one small one, we were able to get help very quickly.
I would love to stay in your home during summer time.
The only suggestion for future is to have window blinds or curtains in upstairs rooms. We had to use extra towels to cover windows so that children will not be awaken by sun.

Great Views Great Location Great Home

  • 5 of 5
Our family stayed here for 4 nights and we could of not asked for a nicer home or a better location. The home was clean and well stocked. There was plenty of room to be all together in the living area or spread out into the game room or reading area upstairs. The views out the windows were stunning during the day looking out over Horse Tooth Reservoir and at night with the brilliance of the stars. We will definitely stay here again when we come out to visit our daughter who is living in Denver.

This house is a must!

  • 5 of 5
Our family recently rented this home in Ft. Collins and had a wonderful time. The house is completely furnished and ready for all of your needs, be they grilling, cooking inside, relaxing on the beautiful covered porch or just hanging out! We had one very minor problem that was addressed IMMEDIATELY and graciously.
It's nice and quiet and the views are great.
Don't think twice about renting this house!!

Horsetooth Reservoir Cabin

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It had everything we needed. Beautiful cabin, beautiful view, lots of amenities.

It really is a home away from home. We had three big family meals and several good evenings on the patio.

All it needs is a hot tub!

Rocky Mountain National Park

Just 35 miles from Fort Collins, the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park soar to more than 13,000 feet and form the Continental Divide. The town of Estes Park sits at the eastern edge of the park. Rocky Mountain National Park covers 410 square miles and includes Longs Peak (14,255 feet high), 18 named peaks above 13,000 feet, 150 named lakes, and the highest continuously paved highway in the U.S. -- Trail Ridge Road. The road is usually open from Memorial Day until early October. However, the park is open year-round and lower elevation roads are open during the winter. The visitors' center provides information on the history, environment and recreational opportunities in the park. Give yourself plenty of time on this trip, so an early start is advisable. Expect traffic and slow travel in the park during summer.

Fort Collins is the largest producer of beer in Colorado and the state is ranked first in the country in volume produced by breweries (kind of ironic for a town that was 'dry' until 1969). To get a taste of award-winning lagers, pilsners and ales year-round, take our Foam on the Range Tour, or see below for each individual brewery's contact information. The annual Colorado Brewers Festival showcases the state of the state's suds on the last weekend in June. The oldest annual brewfest in Colorado, the Old Town event is open solely to Colorado breweries, including our local hosts.

Family friendly activities abound in and around Fort Collins. Who wouldn’t want to ride a miniature train through one of the city’s prettiest parks? After that, skip across the street and spend the afternoon in the City Park Pool, com0pletely remodeled in 2004 with water features, slides, zero-depth entry, and a lazy river and wading pool, all with the youngest swimmers in mind. If you’re at City Park on a summer weekend, grab a ride to Old Town on the only original restored city streetcar operating in the western U.S. Car 21 you through the heart of old Fort Collins along the broad landscaped center of Mountain Avenue.

Get spectacular views of Colorado from an entirely different vantage point - up in the air! For a once-in-a-lifetime sort of experience, a hot air balloon is the way to go.
