We are Johnny and Susan Kirkland, we live in New York, on Long Island's North Shore, most of the year, but all of our 4 children have moved out west and made it their home. So, we thought we should follow suit, we just aren't quite ready to leave New York full time yet. We bought our house and stay there several times per year, so you can be sure that all of the creature comforts are available to you. Susan is a retired Special Education Teacher, who still substitute teaches on a regular basis and Johnny is a Physicist and software developer. Since our children have gone, we've picked up a new hobby of raising guide dogs. We have successfully raised Josh, who is a working guide dog, and now we are raising London, a puppy in training, and we have Gretha, a black lab breeder dog, who lives with us all of the time. This is where our home's name comes from, The Black Dog Hideaway is a tribute to our love for our guide dogs and the important work they do.

During your visit you may see our son John who takes care of the Black Dog Hideaway and lives in the private basement apartment with a separate entrance, or when you are making a reservation you'll talk to Sue who manages the home and bookings.

Please feel free to contact us anytime, we'd love to hear from you!

Susan Kirkland purchased this house in 2012

We fell in love with this house the moment we stepped inside, and we know that you will too! There are two adorable porch swings on the front porch, and the subtle character is amazing. Downstairs, you'll notice the original woodwork, and a beautiful stained glass lighting fixture over the dining room table. Upstairs was updated with comfort in mind. This house has the best of both worlds, old world history and modern updates and comforts. Plus, you can't beat the location, and proximity to downtown Bozeman!

Please enjoy the jetted tub with TV in the master bath. Also for your comfort we have installed baseboard heaters under each sink to warm you from the bottom up.

In the master bedroom you will find a built -in wall heater for you additional comfort.

The stereo is located in the master bedroom cherry closet, and can be heard throughout the second level on built -in speakers.

In the living room, we have installed a 55 inch 3DTV with 3D glasses for 6. Original hardwood floors have been enhanced with walnut ribbon knots and refinished to their natural beauty. With the push of a button, you can enjoy our gas fireplace and enjoy a cozy relaxing atmosphere with family and friends.

The kitchen has granite counter tops, double oven, pot filler over 5 burner gas stove, ice maker on the refrigerator door, double sink, and trash compactor.

The walk to town is easy, and close, as is Cooper Park at only two blocks away. We have a covered backyard deck with outdoor table and chairs that seat 6 for added summer entertaining.

Bozeman's Best - Black Dog Hideaway

My wife and I stayed here for a week to tour MSU with our son, catch up with great friends and catch some great turns at Big Sky and Bridger Bowl. The house was a "home" to us, with well stocked kitchen, comfy LR with gas fireplace and huge master suite with whirlpool to soothe those aching muscles. Plenty of room in the dining room for a 8 person dinner and the available grill assisted us with a nice winter BBQ! Location was perfect as we walked the short distance to "downtown", including 3 awesome breakfast eateries within 2 blocks. Ample parking for 2 cars off street. Good location in family neighborhood. Nice LG screen with lots of channels and numerous Blu Ray movies to pick from, as well. Sound system upstairs pre-set to FM 93.7, a perfect radio station for our tastes, another nice touch. When warm, the back patio and 2 front porch swings will be very handy - we look forward to that usage during the Spring / Summer. Susan is great and very client-focused, wanting to make sure all was perfect for our stay. All was perfect and we will definitely be back!

The two blocks walking distance from our home to Main Street is great, and I am glad you had the opportunity to eat at some of the great restaurants in town. I hope you will be back and try some more of what Bozeman has to offer. We look forward to hearing from you in the future. Thanks again, Sue & Johnny (owners)

Brothers review Black Dog Hide Away stay

My brother and I appreciated our stay at Black Dog. It was as described and more. The kitchen was especially well-furnished with everything a cook could ever want or need. It's location suited our needs as well. We ate at a couple of Main Street eateries. Our cousin lives nearby, and we split our times going to either Big Sky or Bridger for some excellent skiing.
Thanks so much for the stay.
Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review! We are so happy your stay was so nice and the skiing too! Sounds like you spent a wonderful time spent with family. We hope you will visit Black Dog Hideaway again in the future.

Cheers,
Sue & Johnny Kirkland

We had an amazing experience, our goal was to tour MSU for our son, to be part of the incoming freshman class. It quickly became so much more, we loved the neighborhood feel, the proximity to it all, the environmental awareness of your town, the friendly people. The Black Dog Hideaway, speechless, so well laid out,so well provisioned, loved the sun angles, so well equipped, every room was a delight in its own way, the master bed room and bath, wow! Mary Wallace
Owner's Response: Wow!
Thank you for such a great review! I am so glad your stay at Black Dog Hideaway was so nice for your winter stay. Good luck to your son and maybe we will see you again for Move-in day, Parents Weekend, or the famous MSU vs. UM football game. Or spend some time and enjoy the fabulous summer weather, tour yellowstone, and enjoy all that Bozeman has to offer.
Thanks again,
Sue & Johnny (Owners)

Fabulous weekend!

What a great house! It was well stocked, nicely furnished and super comfy beds. My friend and I came to Bozeman to visit our sons that are at MSU. Their house was less than a mile from this one, so it was super convenient to them and to all the great restaurants and downtown shopping. We grilled steaks for the guys one night, and the kitchen had everything we needed for a wonderful home cooked meal - greatly appreciated by starving college boys! We cannot wait to stay here again. Great house and fun memories of our mother/son weekend. Thanks so much. Didn't want to leave! :)

This adorable house is walking distance to downtown, easy off street parking for 1 vehicle, and set up with all the conveniences of home. We stayed for 1 week and had a great time! Enjoyed the porch swings in the evenings and broke in their brand new grilling utensils one evening for dinner. We loved it!

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you and your family enjoyed your stay at our home, and that you enjoyed grilling and used the utensils. My grandson designed the cover! We hope you will visit us again in the future.
