***

This beautiful Daufuskie vacation home is one of only two 3-bedroom cottages currently available in the 'Melrose on the Beach' cottage community. Designed by its architect-owner, there are many upgrades and special touches you simply will not find elsewhere. You will love the open floor plan, artistic ceramic tile floors, restful screened-in back porch, and lovely decorating throughout. With both ocean and marsh views, your cottage offers the best of both worlds, and provides a private setting perfect for a family vacation, a reunion of good friends, or a special event. (We help with weddings!)

When you rent this cottage, you will find a true island sanctuary located on a low-country coastal island known for its abundant wildlife, pristine beaches, friendly people, and rich cultural history.

Casual but Elegant Accommodations

The cottage's spacious living area includes a family-style table that will serve as the gathering place for meals cooked in your fully-equipped kitchen. Flat screen TVs in the main living area and in every bedroom, as well as Wi-Fi connection, ensure that you can stay connected to the rest of the world...but only if you choose to do so! Each spacious bedroom is tastefully decorated with queen-sized beds: One in the master BR, and two in each of the additional BRs.

You may want to start your morning by sipping coffee and and watching an Atlantic Ocean sunrise from your front porch. Later, grab a good book and head for your backyard hammock. At the end of the day, enjoy an island sunset and cocktails on your screened-in back porch while Blue Heron soars over ancient oaks draped with Spanish Moss.

A secluded ocean beach is steps away from your cottage, and many of our visitors especially enjoying visiting during nesting season of the endangered Loggerhead Turtles.

Your cottage is located on the Melrose on the Beach Resort, and you will have access to the resort amenities including free use of the spectacular Melrose pool area, and discounted rates at the resort's Jack Nicklaus designed golf course and the wonderful Beach Club Restaurant.

The wildlife is abundant and breathtaking. The resort is the home of a Great White Egret rookery, where you will see hundreds of these graceful birds settle in for the night. A nest of American Bald Eagles can be found behind the inn, and now and then vigilant visitors can actually catch sight of a Loggerhead Turtle coming ashore to lay hundreds of eggs in the soft sand.

It's also a great island for bikes and old-fashioned walking. In addition to the Melrose course, avid golfers will also enjoy playing on the nearby Bloody Point championship golf course. We can also refer you to Sea Island Trails so that you can enjoy the island and even the beach on horseback.

And, of course, you will enjoy touring the resort and the island itself on the free golf cart provided to renters of this cottage.

* The pools are not open year-round, and the dates of the pool season are determined solely by the Melrose on the Beach Resort.

As soon as we stepped foot on Daufuskie Island's Melrose Resort more than 8 years ago, we knew this was the perfect place to create lifelong vacation memories for our family. We are so glad we can now introduce others to this our lovely cottage, and to share the island's endless stretches of sandy beaches, quiet roads, spectacular wildlife, and...and most especially...a laid-back vacation experience that is reminiscent of times gone-by.

This special island is accessible only by ferry or water taxi (no traffic jams here!) from Savannah, Georgia or Hilton Head/Bluffton, South Carolina. No traffic jams here!

Daufuskie Island offers a truly memorable getaway for you and your family. Most people who visit Daufuskie fall in love with it. As one visitor told us months after coming here, 'I may have left Daufuskie, but it will never leave me.'

So what are you waiting for?

Reserve this beautiful cottage as your home base for a unique and wonderful vacation opportunity. We look forward to welcoming you to our island!

Loved this cottage!

This was our first stay on Daufuskie Island, and we are eager to return. We knew that winter may not be the best time for a vacation, but the beach was ours for the walking, and the cottage was so comfortable that it did not matter if the weather was not great. Melrose is a wonderful area, and we enjoyed walking among the ponds as well as along the beach. We rented a cart for a day and enjoyed touring the island. But the best part was just enjoying the peace and simplicity of a place where nature takes precedence over technology.

Owner's Response: Chuck and Sarah - Such a pleasure having you on the island! I am so glad you enjoyed this beautiful 3-bedroom cottage. We wish you the best with YOUR Asheville-area VRBO property (I loved staying there last fall!), and hope you can return soon to Daufuskie. Deborah

Quiet Christmas Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We decided to leave the snow and cold of the Northeast and try something a little different for our Christmas vacation. Daufuskie Island was recommended by a relative who stayed at Melrose this past summer. It was not disappointing, though a little different than expected. We used the Daufuskie Rental Group, who were very attentive to our needs. We dealt mainly with Deborah, who took good excellent care of us. She upgraded our golf cart so we could have side curtains, which due to the lower temps, were pretty necessary. She even lent us her own winter coat, as one of our party forgot theirs. Deborah recommended a water taxi,(over the ferry so as not to pay a lot extra for luggage/food/golf clubs). This service was very flexible and accommodated our travel schedule, to include a trip back to the mainland for Catholic mass on Christmas Eve. The cottage was very nice. Clean, comfortable and well appointed. Didn't need to bring anything except food for the week, as we didn't plan many meals out. The cottage was proximate to the beach, about a 1-2 minute walk. It did have beach view through the other cottages. The only problem we had were 2 maintenance issues after we arrived. The clothes bar in the MBDRM closet came loose from the wall and fell after we put our clothes on it. Deborah had a handy man out the next morning, who fixed it securely. The other was a broken plastic part in the toilet tank, which was not fixed before leaving. Our biggest concern was the Melrose Resort/Club/Restaurant. While they advertised 'early bird' meal specials on their website, when we inquired by phone they said they don't have them anymore and were having 'trouble' getting the website changed. They also advertised days and hours of operation, and we planned a couple meals out around that. On Thursday, Dec 26, they were supposed to be open, but weren't. There was even a worker who showed up for a shift but didn't know why they didn't open. Deborah checked into it and later there were some excuses about propane not being delivered, but pretty sketchy indeed. In contrast, another non-private Resort/Restaurant at the other end of the island bent over backwards to take care of us for meals and golf. The golf pro there was awesome. Food and atmosphere great. In sum, it is a different type getaway with not much to do during the winter but golf and explore. People were very friendly, but it's kind of desolate in winter.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your constructive comments.

We're very glad you enjoyed your stay, and I (Deborah) enjoyed getting to know your lovely family. And thank you so much for the delicious Christmas cookies!

We are very sorry that you were not able to access the Beach Club restaurant because of a propane shortage. To our knowledge, this is the first time the restaurant has experienced this sort of issue (and we hope the last!), and are very sorry it happened during your stay. Your comments on this issue will be passed onto the resort management.

Regarding the two maintenance issues, as you noted we were able to get a local handyman to repair the closet issue promptly. Unfortunately, the Christmas holiday week resulted in family commitments by the same handyman and one other we tried, and we regret that we were not able to get the broken part of the toilet in one of your bathrooms fixed prior to your departure.

Some folks like the quiet nature of the resort and the island during the winter months; while others prefer the busier seasons. One way or another, we do hope to see you back on our special island!

10 Year Anniversary Trip

Fabulous Trip! Cottage was beautiful and totally met our expectations from the photographs. Every person we met was friendly, nice and bent over backwards to be helpful with either information or physically helping with our needs. Pool club was within walking distance or short golf cart ride away and was awesome. The golf course was in great shape and was also close by. The Freeport Marina and Bloody Point Golf Club were not that far away either for a golf cart ride. Both Melrose Pool Club restaurant and Bloody Point Golf Club restaurants had great food! Debbie with the management company was sincere and concerned with our welfare and even gave us use of her personal golf cart when the one assigned to us wasn't up to par. Definitely recommend the Island as a vacation spot for all including families.

Great Property

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage at Melrose. Everything the web site suggests was accurate including the ease of transfer to the island to the short walk to the pool. The cottage was very clean and well-equipped. Deborah, our property manager, was willing to help at a moments notice (like when a replacement corkscrew was needed). We found the unpopulated beach and the friendly and accommodating golf staff a bonus. John and Dave took excellent care of us at the beautifully manicured Melrose Golf Club. Golfers of all levels will enjoy this course ... it was also unpopulated. Do plan to bring all you need for groceries, but plan to eat at the Melrose Beach Club for a few meals. The golf cart is a must, so to have it included was vital. Chris with May River Excursions was the water taxi operator that the site suggested, he did a great job with our family of four, plus dog, golf clubs and a week's worth of groceries. A great vacation to 'get off the grid.'

One of the Best Family Vacations Ever

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Jul 23, 2013

I stumbled onto Daufuskie Island a little over a month ago when searching through Hilton Head rentals looking for a place for our family vacation. I had never heard of Daufuskie but the more and more I read the more interested I became. I began searching for homes to rent and found this particular one that we ended up staying in. To be honest, I was a little skeptical at first because at the rate the home was being offered at and phrases like "steps to the beach" and "ocean views" it seemed almost to good to be true. Well not only were those statements true but the reality was this property and island were more than we could have imagined.

Upon arriving in Bluffton and taking May River Excursions over to the island we could tell we were in a special place. I had not been to the low country before and was amazed at how unique and beautiful it was. Once arriving at the dock we were greeted by Dean with the van and golf cart we were promised for our transportation to the house. We loaded our luggage and supplies for the week (as there are no grocery stores) and headed out. The house is meticulously maintained with tile flooring throughout, granite counter tops, comfortable beds, top of the line appliances, and of course, the screened in back porch. This back porch was where we all congregated at the end of the day prior to dinner and often times late into the night after dinner. My mother in law absolutely fell in love with that porch and spent most of her days relaxing and reading.

I heard people like my wife say this was the best place she had ever been. My sister in law said it was the best vacation she had ever been on. I was just thankful we were all able to find this place and spend this week together. My mom said next time we should spend two weeks instead of one.

I could go into plenty more detail but I would undoubtedly miss something so the best thing to do is for those that are interested I highly recommend considering Daufuskie Island and especially this rental property. We easily accommodated seven people but if you had more than that then there is an attached two bedroom owned by the same people so I am sure it is just as nice.

In closing, if you are looking for a simple, relaxing and quiet vacation without the traffic and two hour waits at restaurants then this is the place to go.

Thank you to Barb, Deb and Dean for all the hospitality.

This lovely, second row, beach cottage, is located in Melrose on the Beach, just steps away from 2 miles of pristine, quiet beaches where all you can hear is the sound of gentle waves and beautiful shore birds. Watch the shrimp boats, take a Historic tour and discover the Gulah History of Daufuskie or take in a round of golf. Don't forget to try our island delicacy, deviled crabs! Better still, we'll help arrange a full low-country dinner prepared by a local resident to be delivered directly to your cottage.

In addition to the Melrose resort, Daufuskie has several unique and colorful restaurants (Marshside Mama's and the Daufuskie Crab Company) where you'll swear you're in the middle of the Caribbean, as well as the casual but upscale Eagle's Nest at Bloody Point. History buffs will enjoy exploring the island and visiting various sites providing a glimpse into the past, including the recently-restored Oyster House used as a 19th century Gullah meeting place, the Billie Burns Museum, ancient cemeteries, and the two-room school house where renowned author Pat Conroy taught and which was the subject of his first book, The Water is Wide. Those interested in unique shopping opportunities will want to visit the Iron Fish Art Gallery, the Glass House, and the weekly farmer's market held at the public dock during the warmer months. And you certainly don't want to miss the Daufuskie Island Community Farm, where old and young visitors alike are encouraged to help feed the chickens and even to try milking a goat!
