Flat screen TVs in the main living area and in every bedroom, as well as Wi-Fi connection, ensure that you can stay connected to the rest of the world...but only if you choose to do so! Each spacious bedroom is tastefully decorated with queen-sized beds: One in the master BR, and two in each of the additional BRs.

At the end of the day, enjoy an island sunset and cocktails on your screened-in back porch while Blue Heron soars over ancient oaks draped with Spanish Moss.

A secluded ocean beach is steps away from your cottage, and many of our visitors especially enjoying visiting during nesting season of the endangered Loggerhead Turtles.

Your cottage is located on the Melrose on the Beach Resort, and you will have access to the resort amenities including free use of the spectacular Melrose pool area, and discounted rates at the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course and the wonderful Beach Club Restaurant.

In addition, the Daufuskie Cottage is one of the few Melrose properties that also offers its guests access to the private Bloody Point Resort water taxi/ferry system from the Savannah Westin Resort, as well as discounted Bloody Point golf privileges.

A new feature of particular interest to winter guests is that effective Christmas of 2014, the Daufuskie Cottage will have a working gas fireplace. (Most beach cottage fireplaces are decorative only.)

Please note that a well-behaved canine member of the family is welcome. (The pet fee for one dog is $125. Contact the manager about multiple dogs, including the total fee.)

The wildlife is abundant and breathtaking. The resort is the home of a Great White Egret rookery, where you will see hundreds of these graceful birds settle in for the night. A nest of American Bald Eagles can be found behind the inn, and now and then vigilant visitors can actually catch sight of a Loggerhead Turtle coming ashore to lay hundreds of eggs in the soft sand.

Our island is also great for bikes and old-fashioned walking. In addition to the Melrose course, avid golfers will also enjoy playing on the nearby Bloody Point championship golf course. We can also refer you to Sea Island Trails so that you can enjoy the island and even the beach on horseback.

And, of course, you will enjoy touring the resort and the island itself on the free golf cart provided to renters of this cottage.

* The pools are not open year-round, and the dates of the pool season are determined solely by the Melrose on the Beach Resort.

About Deborah Smith

The owners are Kentucky residents, and have been coming to Daufuskie for many years. This cottage is managed by Daufuskie Rental Group.

Deborah Smith purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Deborah Smith chose Daufuskie Island

As soon as we stepped foot on Daufuskie Island and the Melrose Resort more than 8 years ago, we knew this was the perfect place to create lifelong vacation memories for our family. We are so glad we can now introduce others to this our lovely cottage, and to share the endless stretches of sandy beaches, quiet roads, spectacular wildlife, and...and most especially...a laid-back vacation experience that is reminiscent of times gone-by.

What makes this cottage unique

This special island is accessible only by ferry or water taxi (no traffic jams here!) from Savannah, Georgia or Hilton Head/Bluffton, South Carolina. No traffic jams here!

Daufuskie Island offers a truly memorable getaway for you and your family. Most people who visit Daufuskie fall in love with it. As one visitor told us months after coming here, 'I may have left Daufuskie, but it will never leave me.'

So what are you waiting for?

Reserve this beautiful cottage as your home base for a unique and wonderful vacation opportunity. We look forward to welcoming you to our island!

Stranded on an island, in the best way possible!

  • 5 of 5

This is truly the most unique place we've ever stayed. Once you get on the Island, your are on the island. This is not a place for people who need to be in control of their day, meals, etc. You have to have a go with the flow attitude the second you get on the water taxi.

Planning the trip took quite a bit of organizing but it was completely worth it! The house was clean, enough room for 5 adults, within a 30 second walk to the ocean, couldn't have asked for anything better. We were there during the off season so there was only one restaurant open, but the food was great and it was a fun place to hang out and meet the other guests.

Deborah was incredibly helpful from lending us a golf cart when ours wasn't working, to directing us to a place to rent scooters and bikes.

We had a blast and would definitely come back. It's such a relaxed place and everyone is so friendly. Even being in the off season, there was still so much to do, I mean, how can you have a bad experience when your mode of transportation is a golf cart!!!

Peaceful getaway

  • 4 of 5

Loved our time on Daufuskie! Peace, quiet and beauty. We had a few minor hiccups, but overall a wonderful experience, and we will return. Everyone was friendly, and we loved riding in the golf cart all over the island . Our dog loved it, and it created a great memory for us. I think he was as disappointed to be back home as we were.

Owner's Response: Karen - So glad you and your family enjoyed your beautiful cottage, and your time on Daufuskie! (And yes, our canine visitors seem to enjoy the island even more than the human visitors!) We hope to see you back again!! Deborah Smith Daufuskie Rental Group

Very nice

  • 4 of 5

My family and I stayed 5 nights and loved every minute of it. The momement I walked in I felt right at home. Very cozy and tastefully decorated. We ecspecially loved the sunroom, that's were we had our coffe every morning. The kitchen was well equipped, which was nice since we cooked almost everyday. The only complaint I have is all the mattresses need to be replaced. My poor husband played musical beds the whole vacation and even tried sleeping on the couch one night.

Owner's Response: Jessica - Thanks so much for your nice comments about this pretty cottage! We are glad you and your family enjoyed your stay! Regarding the mattresses, we were a bit surprised by that comment, and I am going to call you directly to get more information on the problems your husband experienced. These are high end mattresses, and we have not had any other complaints about them. It will be helpful for us to know what specific problems he had, e.g., too hard, too soft, etc., and we will certainly take his concerns into consideration. In the meantime, thanks again for the nice comments about the cottage and our special island...and we hope to see you again! Deborah Smith Daufuskie Rental Group

We love Daufuskie!

Our family stay here with the adjoining cottage, and had a marvelous stay! This cottage is cheerful, very spacious, and the decor is in very good condition. Deborah was so very helpful, and transitions to and from the dock went smoothly. The pool area and beach club restaurant are great, and the Nicklaus golf course was is good condition after being aerated in May sometime. We would stay here, again - for

sure... if you want a restful, low-country vaca, this is the place!!

Worth the effort

Cottage is exactly as described. Everyone was comfortable. The cottage is a short walk to the Melrose Pool and Restaurant and also the beach. A short golf cart ride will take you to Bloody Point and Marshside Mamas. We ate breakfasts and some lunches in, but went out for all of our dinners. Requires some planning since there is no grocery store on the Island.

Want to relax? This is your place!

Loved this cottage!

This was our first stay on Daufuskie Island, and we are eager to return. We knew that winter may not be the best time for a vacation, but the beach was ours for the walking, and the cottage was so comfortable that it did not matter if the weather was not great. Melrose is a wonderful area, and we enjoyed walking among the ponds as well as along the beach. We rented a cart for a day and enjoyed touring the island. But the best part was just enjoying the peace and simplicity of a place where nature takes precedence over technology.

Owner's Response: Chuck and Sarah - Such a pleasure having you on the island! I am so glad you enjoyed this beautiful 3-bedroom cottage. We wish you the best with YOUR Asheville-area VRBO property (I loved staying there last fall!), and hope you can return soon to Daufuskie. Deborah

This lovely, second row, beach cottage, is located in Melrose on the Beach, just steps away from 2 miles of pristine, quiet beaches where all you can hear is the sound of gentle waves and beautiful shore birds. Watch the shrimp boats, take a Historic tour and discover the Gulah History of Daufuskie or take in a round of golf. Don't forget to try our island delicacy, deviled crabs! Better still, we'll help arrange a full low-country dinner prepared by a local resident to be delivered directly to your cottage.

In addition to the Melrose resort, Daufuskie has several unique and colorful restaurants (Marshside Mama's and the Daufuskie Crab Company) where you'll swear you're in the middle of the Caribbean, as well as the casual but upscale Eagle's Nest at Bloody Point. History buffs will enjoy exploring the island and visiting various sites providing a glimpse into the past, including the recently-restored Oyster House used as a 19th century Gullah meeting place, the Billie Burns Museum, ancient cemeteries, and the two-room school house where renowned author Pat Conroy taught and which was the subject of his first book, The Water is Wide. Those interested in unique shopping opportunities will want to visit the Iron Fish Art Gallery, the Glass House, and the weekly farmer's market held at the public dock during the warmer months. And you certainly don't want to miss the Daufuskie Island Community Farm, where old and young visitors alike are encouraged to help feed the chickens and even to try milking a goat!
