A magical spacious cottage get-away!

  • 5 of 5
I've stayed here many times, both as a personal writing retreat and romantic weekends with my husband. The property is in easy walking distance to lovely restaurants/bars/market. It's a perfect home base for wine tasting in the region (wineries a few minutes down the road; ~35 mins beautiful drive to Napa Valley wine train), seeing sights/hiking (Jack London park is a short drive up the road), or for staying in to soak in the hot tub and sip wine. There's a closet of games (like Mastermind and Triomino, if I'm remembering correctly). The property is quiet and private in a small neighborhood; the house is clean, the owners are friendly and accessible. It's a fabulous value, the only downside is making sure to book early enough in advance before all the dates are gone!

We are a family of 4. Our two daughters are 22 and 17. We chose this location because it was central to San Francisco, Napa, and Bodega Bay. Our family values being connected to the world via wifi. This location found us outside in the driveway trying to get one bar of service to stay in touch with my business and the rest of the world. There are no flat screen tv's at all in this location, only the kind you would have owned 20/30 years ago. Getting a good selection of channels was difficult.

There is a very nice wood stove, but no air conditioning in this house. We discovered this the hard way one day when it was close to 100 in the area. There was only one fan available that we could find. The rest of our stay had tolerable weather but it would have been nice to know this ahead of time. I never thought to ask if the house had AC. We thought of buying a fan if it continued to be hot. The stair rails and supporting vertical slats going up to the master bedroom were mostly loose. I wouldn't allow small children to stay here because of that. The towel bar in the upstairs bathroom was pulled off the wall on one side with a note beside it that said if we wanted he would come and fix it. Seems like this should have been done before we arrived. The hot tub needed an "O" ring replaced and was unusable. Cob webs around light fixtures, the dishwasher needs to be rolled to the sink and hooked up. There were notes and instructions everywhere on what to do and touch and what not to do or touch. Even the binders with instructions were scribbled here and there and the pages were crinkled and water stained.

This place was very affordable. We left two days before we had to. Our trip to Monterey Bay was unplanned and a welcome return to the 21st century. This place needs updating.

Owner's Response: Our apologies for your unhappy stay. By reading our VRBO description we use such words as rustic, affordable, cottage. Nowhere do we try to pass off this house as more than a comfortable, homey stop between wine tasting, exploring nature, and relaxing in solitude. We do not claim to be updated nor do we wish to be as we would no longer be affordable. By looking at our VRBO info our photos show the type of TVs available. Our description states we have no AC, but we have a ceiling fan and portable fan.....we live in the country where people open our screened windows in summer. Our description also states we have a portable dishwasher and limited basic cable. We had a repairman who had to order the O ring for the hot tub.....that was unavoidable.
We did not want to disturb you with repairing towel rack unless you wanted that....hence, we said call us if you wanted. My husband was not in town until the day after you arrived. We have a cell number, a landline and a neighbor you could have contacted for these issues. As far as wifi.....yes the area has a few issues, but as we stated in provided info if you hit the restart button it will come back.....wifi works all over the house and yards....not just at end of driveway.....cell service is good even for people without high tech phones. As far as instructions being posted this is a common practice in rentals so vacationers are not left wondering what to do.
There are an amazing number of more expensive luxury properties in the area whose descriptions and pictures show updated kitchens, flat screen tvs, AC, extensive cable packages, etc that might have been more to your liking.

Awesome rustic home in Glen Ellen!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this quaint home for a wedding in Glen Ellen. It is walking distance to three local restaurants, the best market ever, and a small town saloon that serves until 2am. Really great for those that either want solitude in the woods or those that want to walk to the adorable town. Satisfies everyone's needs! We will definitely be back. Even fit in some wine tasting close by (tons of options). Best value in Glen Ellen and great owners who are really easy to work with.

Going Home!

  • 4 of 5
This was "going home" for us! We grew up in Glen Ellen and lived in the area until 8 years ago. The location is ideal for us - walking to the Glen Ellen Village Market and good restaurants. It's quiet in the "circle" and the neighbors friendly. If we could have a vacation home in Glen Ellen this would be perfect - we're already making plans for future visits!

Exceptional Home, Price, and Location

  • 5 of 5
Good Morning Margaret,

Just wanted to follow up with you on our stay at your lovely home in Glen Ellen. First of all, your pictures do not do it justice. We were so impressed how open and how much room there was for us. The split plan of the bedrooms was great for privacy! We felt right at home! The kitchen was amazing with everything needed for grilling and cooking. We fixed one meal without needing a thing! You have thought of everything! We would have done more but with such a short stay we weren't there much except to sleep. Again beds were comfy and everything was nice and clean. The other thing was that the house was so close to everything-perfect for walking just down to main area of Glen Ellen. We walked down to the quaint local market which had wonderful deli, coffee and specialties. We totally enjoyed our time in wine country and staying at such a great place made it complete! We would and will recommend your lovely home, Thanks again Margaret. Sincerely, Patty C

Very cosy and homey retreat

  • 5 of 5
Very conveniently located and easy access. The house feels very homey and has all what's needed for a nice, worry-free vacation. Very quiet and safe location, I slept like a baby!
The owner was very helpful and made sure I had all the information I needed before getting to the property. Very prompt to respond to questions and information request about surrounding points of interest.
Definitely recommend. Great value.
Thank you for sharing your property!
Eric, Philadelphia.
