In this volatile economy, we are managing to keep our prices very low so that more people can enjoy what we consider to be a little bit of paradise. But don't be fooled by our low prices. We may not be considered one of the 'luxury villas', but you will be more than comfortable. Plus, when you arrive the fridge and kitchen can be pre-stocked with food and drinks for you. And when you return to the Birdcage after a full day at the beach each day, Novlet will have made the whole place spotless for you, including doing your laundry and folding it onto your bed for you. You have cable TV, lots of DVDs, wireless internet, and just about all the other important amenities the more expensive places offer. So you are pampered enough, plus you have the freedom to enjoy your vacation the way that you want to.

Even if you don't end up renting from us, you're going to find the website very useful and interesting. There have been significant improvements to the infrastructure of the island of Jamaica, making it faster and easier to travel from town to town. Now is a great time to check it out! Like the US, they are having recession worries. In September of '08, US$1 bought JA$72, more or less. In November of 2010, US$1 bought JA$85. As of January 2013, it's up to 90 or more. That makes now a good time to go!

As we update this VRBO page in late January '13, our most recent trip to the Birdcage was in October of '12. As always, we made some improvements to the place. This time, we re-finished the master bedroom floor. Other recent improvements from the past few years: we repainted the kitchen, bought a new gas stove (better than electric!), bought a generic 'iHome' for playing MP3's and ipods, and did several other minor improvements. Our 'Things to Do' booklet that we have out for guests is now over 50 pages long, and chock full of great advice, pictures, phone numbers, and more. The more often we go there, the more people we meet. Therefore, the more we learn about the island! And not only have WE made improvements on the inside of our villa, the gardener and management have made improvements on the outside as well. We know you will love staying there!

First off, the view from the villa is unbelievable. The picture with the great view was taken while sitting on our balcony, yet it looks like a postcard. The villa is set into a hill approximately 1 or 1.5 miles up from the main part of town (where Turtle beach and the exciting Main Street are), making it a convenient -- yet still private -- place to vacation. We share an inground pool, a gardener, and beautiful landscaping with the 4 other Birdcage villas next to us. But usually when you visit the pool, you have it all to yourself!

With the rental comes a private housekeeper from 10-4 every single day except Sundays and holidays, a wonderful property manager, and arrangements can even be made to pre-stock the kitchen with the food and drinks you want. You will be greeted when you arrive, shown around, and given the keys. How great is it to wake up each day to this view?! And then to spend each day any way you want, without the hustle and bustle of other hotel guests and without the boring rows and rows of identical rooms?! Great for couples, singles, families, and friends! Fishermen, adventure seekers, relaxers, extroverts, introverts, and everyone else! Spacious and inviting! Tons of closet and cabinet space for you! In town, the beaches are gorgeous, the food is great, the casino is open 24/7, there is Margaritaville and plenty of other fun bars and restaurants, Dunn's River Falls, Dolphin Cove, the zipline and bobsled rides at Mystic Mountain Rainforest, Shaw Park Gardens, great golf at area resorts, fun marketplaces, awesome water sports, tons of excursions to choose from, Bob Marley's house, Fern Gully, and so much more!

The unit itself is large, with a big master bedroom and master bathroom; a smaller guest bedroom and guest bathroom; a complete kitchen; a spacious living/dining room area with TV, DVD, CD player, a large collection of DVD movies (about 200 now!), board games, desk, dining room table for 4-6; a balcony with table and chairs for 4; all the linens and toys you will need for the beach, bed, bath, kitchen, and dining room; air conditioning and fans in the bedrooms; fans in the living/dining room and kitchen.

The master bedroom has a king bed, the guest bedroom has 2 twins (which can be made up as a king), and we have two cots with twin sized mattresses that can be put in the master bedroom or living room. With all the amenities and comfort, you may never want to leave the house! But, in case you do, we've set out a book we've made for our guests with activity suggestions and phone numbers for you.

Our place is not a gated community, nor is it part of a 24-hour security compound. It's a 'real' place in a 'real' neighborhood, giving you a glimpse of some 'real' life, while also still giving you all the comforts and perks you could want!

About Teresa Obin

We are Carl and Teresa Obin from Massachusetts. We met at work and began dating back in 2000. Carl is a maintenance man at a private school and I used to be a middle school Spanish teacher and soccer + lacrosse coach at the same school. We got married 2 years later (in Montego Bay, Jamaica!) and then bought the Birdcage in '04. That's the same year I left my job after 11 years so that I could become a massage therapist, which gave me the flexible schedule we needed so that we could begin to vacation together more and more. Both of us are of the philosophy that no one will be writing on our gravestones that we wish we had spent more time at work! We are at our happiest when we are in Ocho Rios, and not one single day goes by that we don't talk about Jamaica and our Birdcage.

Why Teresa Obin chose Ocho Rios

The first time Carl and I took a vacation together, we had planned to go to Aruba. But Aruba was too pricey for us, so our travel agent let us know that Jamaica is a much cheaper destination. So we went in '01 to a hotel in Montego Bay and absolutely fell in love with the weather, the beaches, and the vibe. The next year, we returned to MoBay and got married there. On the day our families left, we sipped champagne from our hotel balcony and watched the sunset and then the idea hit us: hey, we could do this. We decided that even though we were just a maintenance man and a teacher, without much income or savings, we were determined to make it work. We spent one year emailing back and forth with the realtor in Jamaica, narrowing down our choices based on location, price, neighborhood, and more. So when we returned to that hotel the next winter for our vacation, we spent a few days checking out the properties that interested us. When we entered the Birdcage for the first time, it took our breath away. The view was heart-stopping, and suddenly we knew we were home. It's the perfect place for us. We would not have been happy in a hotel-like condo with cookie cutter set ups. At the Birdcage, Carl feels perfectly comfortable taking out his saw, drills, and other tools, and spending the afternoon on a project. We're pretty sure neighbors in a condo community wouldn't appreciate that! But the Birdcage is so unique. The fact that there are just 5 units, they are spacious, the pool is perfect, the people are so neighborly and real, the weather is great, etc., we just couldn't be happier. It's doubtful we would have made the friends and connections we've made if we had bought any other kind of place. We love it! Can you tell?

What makes this townhome unique

The Birdcage offers the perfect combination of convenience (just 1.5 miles to downtown, where everything from beaches to stores to restaurants to attractions are) and privacy. You can make yourself right at home in a way that's just not possible at a hotel. The kids don't have to whisper, you can spread your stuff out, etc. We have so many supplies for you that a hotel just won't have --- masks, snorkels, beach towels, koozies, coolers, games, movies, and on and on. You can make it a really low-budget vacation by bringing the coolers to the beach, using public transportation instead of taxis or rental cars if you want, eating dinner in, and using the pool a lot. Or you can splurge and hire a cook, use taxis and private drivers to go everywhere, go out to dinner, and hit every attraction around. You can hide from reality and just stay on the balcony or at the pool, or you can make friends with the neighbors. We hope you get to experience the Birdcage as well!

The birdcage is AMAZING!!! It had everything we needed to make our vacation totally awesome. The view was priceless and at night when you look into the city (Ocho Rios) It was so beautiful! I personally loved how we just felt right at home. I would definitely come and stay here again and again.

The Birdcage #2 is located on a hillside that looks out over downtown Ocho Rios and the beach. It's also next to Shaw Park Botanical Garden, one street above Oceans on the Ridge restaurant/bar, a few streets below Coyaba Gardens, and one street to the side of Evita's Italian restaurant. It's 1.5 miles down the hill to the main part of town, where Main Street is. Main Street runs through the heart of Ochi, starting at Fisherman's Village and Margaritaville. East from there, along about 1-1.5 miles of road, you can find the main beach, many restaurants, the casino, tons of stores, supermarkets, and the craft market. West of Margaritaville, in less than 5 minutes' drive, you find Island Hoppers helicopter tours, Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain, and Dolphin Cove. A few minutes more and you're at Scotchies famous jerk chicken. Farther east than the craft market on Main Street, you can find more beaches. There's Mahogany Beach about a mile away, Reggae Beach another 10 minutes farther, and then 15 more minutes away is James Bond Beach in Oracabessa next to the Golden Eye resort.

Additional information about rental rates

Fees And Taxes In addition to our rates above for low and high season, we also charge only US$700/week during August and September and we increase our rates to $1000/week when the rental includes Xmas or New Year's.
Additionally, we charge a refundable US$200 security deposit.
Housekeeping is included, but you must pay a tip to the housekeeper. Generally it is 8-15% of whatever your rental costs.
Notes We have a "payment + cancellation policy" we send to interested renters. You would pay 50% of the rental rate to secure the reservation, then the remaining balance (as well as the $200 sec. deposit) is payable up until 14 days before the rental dates begin. We take Paypal, bank checks, money orders, and we're willing to take a personal check if it is given to us early enough to clear properly.
