Driftwood has two personalities. The original, 80 plus years family house comprises a family/ games/ TV room with a double sofa bed and other comfortable seating. Off this room you will find double and single bedrooms and a full shower room. There is also a laundry/mud room. From the family room you enter the modern addition of the Great Room (living, dining, kitchen)with a cathedral ceiling, Brazilian cherry floor and French doors leading to a large deck which is only 30 yards from the ocean. Here you will find deck chairs and a picnic table. Many birds, including hummingbirds, visit the bird feeders here.
Back inside, admire the new fully equipped kitchen and wood burning fireplace before heading upstairs to the Master en suite bedroom with a Queen size bed and a stunning view of Mahone Bay. There is a private deck for morning coffee or sunset cocktails overlooking the ocean. Outside there are extensive lawns and a large patio, with a round table, stump stools and adirondack chairs, and a propane, Weber BBQ. A fire pit and garden are also found here. The back of the property is wooded. We also have a small barn on the property.
We are a retired couple from the Toronto area who are both water signs. We enjoy nature, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, bird watching and being cozy in front of a fire with a good book. I love lobster and he loves fresh fish and we both enjoy a good restaurant.
In the summer of 2012, we returned to the Maritimes where we had previously enjoyed many holidays. We love the food, there is lots to do and there are great restaurants. The Nova Scotians we have encountered are some of the nicest and friendliest people we have ever met. We rented a house for a week, did a lot of sightseeing and one day passed this cottage. As they say, it was a 'coup de foudre' Within a week, we had purchased Driftwood and had started plans for paint colours, furniture and a new kitchen. The views of the ocean from the Great room and kitchen and especially the Master bedroom sold me and the woods and proximity to the ocean appealed to my husband. The floor plan is perfect for just the 2 of us, but also provides great accommodation for friends and family.
Driftwood is on a seldom traveled, no exit road, with ocean in front and forest behind and is therefore very calm and peaceful. However, the house is located 45 minutes from Halifax and even closer to Chester (20 min), Lunenberg and the town of Mahone Bay with restaurants and shopping and fascinating history.
In this area, there are some of the best hiking and biking trails in Nova Scotia.
Upper Blandford Road, located just off the Lighthouse Route,is a quiet, no exit, coastal road frequented more by walkers and cyclists than by motor vehicles. Driftwood sits on a large lot, which allows you to enjoy the wildlife, assorted water fowl and garden birds.
There is direct access to a stony beach and kayak launch area.
On the way to Blandford village you will find Lynne Millman's Art Gallery and a store/cafe, The Deck which serves a great clam chowder. Annie White is the proprietor. Tell her where you are staying: Driftwood was once her family home.
Just 10 minutes away is Bayswater Beach, renowned for its lovely, sandy, crescent shaped beach. Just past Bayswater Beach, on the way to Hubbards, is Shatfords, where you can pick up lobster and other fresh fish.
