About Su Grimmer

This custom built home is owned by our family. It was custom designed and built by one of Nanaimo's most well-respected builders. It sits on the site of one of the original Departure Bay summer cottages built circa 1900. The original wood-frame summer cottage was not salvageable, and so, in 2012, a custom designed house was built on the site. Lots of history. Brand new luxury home.

The house site and the whole of the Departure Bay Beach area is one of the most historic in the region. Walk on waterfront is hard to find anywhere in the world, and Departure Bay Beach House is just that...the beach, and the ocean, just outside the ocean side doors of the house.

Absolutely Stunning!

Stunning, spectacular, gorgeous... I don't think there is an adjective that really describes this place. We knew when we looked at the photos on the web site that the house was beautiful. What we didn't know was just HOW beautiful it is, or how comfortable. As great as the photos are, they don't do this place justice. We felt it as soon as we walked in the door. The view is breathtaking. I don't remember the last time I watched the sun rise, but I watched it every single morning while we were there, either from the upper balcony or while lying in bed.

The layout of the house is perfect for groups. Lots of space for gathering (which we did a lot of), but plenty of places to be alone, too, if that's what you need. Every time someone asked, "I wonder if there's a (fill in the blank) in the kitchen," someone else would reply "Yes!" The only thing we didn't find in the kitchen was a Keurig coffee machine. :-)

I can honestly say that this was the most relaxing vacation I've ever been on. Thank you, Su, for offering such a beautiful vacation home, and thank you for ordering in the beautiful weather! I've already recommended you and your vacation home to others, and we are also planning another trip next year.

Absolutely stunning!!

The Departure Bay Beach House was perfect for our family. There was a lot of space, which was nice since there were six of us. It is such a beautiful house, so new and clean! It was also amazing being right on the beach - we were in or on the water every single day. The view is stunning, especially from the patio, which is where we spent most of our time. We would recommend this house for anyone who wants an amazing Vancouver Island experience.

Fabulous House for Our July 2014 Family Reunion

We were a mix of ages from grandparents to young children - we all loved this house and its location.

The cooks among us took great delight in the well stocked and organized kitchen, which was big enough for several people to work in together.

The water babies had fun in the ocean, whether using the kayak (it comes with the house rental), swimming, or just splashing around.

The movie buffs had a great time watching a video on the big screen one afternoon. And the bookworms found many quiet spots to retreat and enjoy the chance to read without interruption.

Most importantly, the members of our family who had yet to meet one another came together in this comfortable house, happy to be sharing the space. Among the amenities were a number of surprising touches, like cozy throws and plastic dishes and cups for young children.

The owner is really the icing on the cake. She is unfailingly cheerful, and available to answer questions and provide information by phone, email or text message.

Would I come back? By all means!

A wonderful family retreat - prepare to be spoiled!

We opened the front door, and while the adults walked through the house going "oooh!" the kids hightailed it out to the beach and squealed their own "oooh's" as they collected multicolored shells. Su has created the ultimate guesthouse, with top quality kitchen, linens and decor. Lots of spaces for our family of 9 to gather or read alone. Gourmet kitchen, bicycles and kayaks to use. Everything was labeled with instructions so there was no concern on our part. Su stopped by briefly a few times to see we had all we needed, and when she noticed we didn't have enough beach chairs, they arrived the next day. She was also very helpful even before we arrived, sending us updates on what's happening in the area. We loved the lapping of the water and the gorgeous sunrise/set over Departure Bay and hope to return.

Wow what a lovely place!

It has taken me 12 months to write this review, but I am doing so now because we still talk about the trip, we absolutely loved it! The House was better than we could of imaged, perfect is not good enough, we were able to see all the family on the island, enjoy the daily views across the bay and just relax. When we talk about our time we always say the house made it. The help and consideration of the owner was wonderful not just for the house but helping with the whole trip, everything was so personal this meant so much to all of us. We will be coming again!

Custom built in 2012 by one of Nanaimo's premiere builders, our modern, stylish two-storey private residence, can be your vacation rental dream come true.

An Ideal Waterfront Location

Departure Bay is short distance from shopping and dining with a number of restaurants within walking distance of the house. Nanaimo is a thriving community of parks, beaches, charming eclectic shops, waterfront walks, marinas and myriad dining choices from fine to casual, plus all the modern convenience needed for an enjoyable stay. These include grocery stores, gas stations, libraries, theatres, restaurants and delis, specialty food shops, spas, doctors and dentists, massage therapists and beauty salons.

The city of Nanaimo sits mid-Island and is a central arrival and departure point for BC Ferries to the BC Mainland. There is also an airport, or you can come and go via seaplane (Harbour Air, Seair Seaplanes or Westcoast Air) into Nanaimo Harbour from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver International Airport. The seaplane trip is only 20 minutes!

The TransCanada Highway (Hwy #1) runs directly through the heart of Nanaimo. From here you can venture north to Mount Washington, Courtenay and Comox, west to Tofino or south to the Cowichan Valley and Victoria.
