Sink your toes into the sand or lace up your hiking boots knowing that there's a lovely little cottage waiting for you to come home to!
Deani and Todd Higashi have been residents of the Wailua Homesteads for nearly 30 years. Both locals of this gorgeous island, they have chosen to raise their five children and two grandchildren nestled amongst the lush greenery of Kauai. Todd, a longtime surfing instructor, spends his days teaching young and old alike to learn to surf the beautiful waters, and Deani works overlooking and maintaining gorgeous properties around the Garden Island. Both love spending time with their beautiful 'ohana!
Deani Higashi purchased this cottage in 1988
Upon seeing the Wailua Homesteads, Tood and Deani fell instantly in love and knew this was the place to raise their family together. Away from the hustle and bustle of Kapa'a and other nearby towns, this upcountry farmland estate provided a safe, quiet place for their multiple children and grandchildren to play safely and enjoy true island living. The seperate cottage was built in 1990 as a longterm rental on the edge of the property and remodeled just last year, and Deani and Todd decided to turn it into a vacation rental in order to provide more opportunity for others to experience beautiful Kauai!
Quiet, clean, and off the beaten path, this cottage provides you with ample opportunity to disappear into local culture and get away from tourists! Listen to the lush sounds of local tropical birds and animals -- no traffic here! Enjoy true country living in the lap of luxury. Aloha and Mahalo!
We visited Kaua'i for a little less than a week. While there we wanted to make the most of our time hiking and exploring all over the island, so we needed to stay somewhere central that would allow us to get across the island in an hour or less. Deani's cottage, Li'i Lani, could not have been more perfect. We hiked the Na Pali coast, Waimea Canyon, and we explored the towns of Princeville, Hanelei, Eleele and Waimea. All of these were a 60 min or less drive away. The cottage itself is very lovely, and the setting is absolutely beautiful. It is tucked away in the country away from the more tourist trodden parts of Kapa'a allowing for quiet and privacy. If you're coming from the south island, you can see Opaekaʻa falls on your drive in. Though it is in the country, it is a short enough drive to the restaurants and shops in town should you need to grab a bite to eat or supplies. It's clear that she and her family take great care of place. It is clean, maintained, and the attention to detail is there. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking, the closet is packed with supplies for day trips to the beach, and she had a lovely care package waiting for us when we arrived. The flowers are beautiful, and the grounds are very well kept as well. Deani was very accommodating and she quickly responded to any concerns or questions we had during our stay. I would definitely recommend this to any couple looking for a romantic getaway! We've already decided that we're coming back.
We were welcomed by Deani and nothing was too much trouble. The cottage is VERY well equipped. Staying at the cottage made us feel right at home. Smart TV, beach mats and chairs, lots of beach towels made for a very relaxing stay. Delightful!
What a wonderful place to stay! This was our first trip to the island of Kauai and we couldn't have picked a better location. We were central to the entire island and after a full day of sightseeing and hiking, its was glorious to come back to the calm and serenity of our home! Deani's attention to detail was excellent, from the scrumptious home baking to the bottle of champagne. Everything you see in the photos are accurate and more. The house is kept very clean and tidy....and the BED!!! I think I had my best sleeps ever! Li'l Lani will be our place to stay when we return to this paradise island. Aloha and Mahalo!
This is my second time staying at the cottage for ten days and again did not disappoint. My Kauai time consists of a lot of hiking and beach time so I don't need much of what the resorts offer. Li'l Lani is the perfect "homebase" for my adventures on the island and all of the extras that Deani provides make it a joy to stay here.
We spent a week at Li'i Lani and were very pleased with the setup. Very well appointed kitchen made cooking in a great option. The place was neat and comfortable, tastefully appointed, and the bed was a dream to sleep on. Deani our host was gracious, accommodating and really showed the aloha spirit of Kauai. The location is definitely up the hill ('mauka' is the Hawaiian word), which means you have a bit of a drive to get to town and the beach. However for us it suited us perfectly as it provided quick access to some of the great local hikes which were on our list and we had a week at the 'makai' side of things already. I have no problem recommending the cottage to future visitors.
My husband and I spent two blissful weeks at "our little cottage in paradise." It was a wonderful experience. No expense has been spared and Deani has thought of absolutely everything! Highly recommended.
Deani’s ohana cottage, Li’i Lani, was our ‘little heaven’ on our recent visit to Kaua’i. I lived in Wailua Homesteads years ago and it was a joy to come back. This is a wonderful local upcountry neighborhood with lush gardens, running streams, and amazing views of Sleeping Giant and Mount Wai’ale’ale. (There are great hiking trails on Sleeping Giant/Nounou Mountain, too.) The place is just up the road from the main road in Kapa’a, Kuhio Highway, so it’s very central to cafes and markets (and very nice beaches). It’s a perfect location because of its proximity to the North Shore (Ha’ena, Hanalei, Princeville, Kilauea) and South Shore (Poipu, Koloa, Kalaheo, Waimea). The cottage, itself, is amazing retreat. It’s totally immaculate, really comfortable, and nicely appointed. It’s very charming with ceiling fans and seashells. We arrived to a freshly baked pie and an overflowing basket of local snacks, red wine, and ground coffee. The kitchen was stocked with appliances and cooking utensils and there were a ton of helpful little items (beach towels, mats, and chairs!) to help us feel at home. There’s a beautiful vegetable garden with a seating area near the back lanai and it was a pleasure to have breakfast outside each day and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before setting off on an adventure. We highly recommend Li’i Lani and we look forward to returning one day. Mahalo nui loa, Deani!
The greatest part about staying in the Wailua area is the central location. You can easily travel to the north or south or west side of the island. You may want to consider one of the fabulous Luas or ATV tours or a zip line adventure. If that seems a little too much then take a drive around the island and catch the view of waterfalls.
