Overview

Silver City Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 1-4)

This charming 1 bedroom 1 bath cottage sits just outside the city limit, making it quiet and private, yet it is less than a mile straight down the street to the historic downtown. The house is one of three homes that sit on about two acres. It was extensively remodeled in the summer of 2012. The house is about 700 SF. It has oak hardwood floors, a completely redone bath, and a full kitchen. There are beautiful views from the property, overlooking downtown and the nearby mountains of the Gila and the Black Range. The Market street trailhead is a five minute walk up the hill, which leads to miles of open space hiking and mountain biking trails through an area of old mines, including one where the adventurous can enter an underground chamber that leads to tunnels going deep into the hillside.

The house backs up to a wooded arroyo where a family of quail lives, and deer regularly wander by and through the property. At night the place is dark and quiet, with the Milky Way visible from the front porch.

Western New Mexico University and the county courthouse are also less than a mile away.

Home Away from Home

This review comes a little late, as our stay was in the summer of 2014, but with the utmost amount of gratitude and respect for Gloria and her family. My husband and I were born and raised in Silver City and still have family that reside there that we visit. We were ecstatic when we found the "casita" (as we like to call it) and were grateful it was available for our stay. It is absolutely precious, charming and very comfortable. We travel with 2 young children and it was just right. The full size kitchen and washer and dryer were an added plus, as was the the bottle of wine that awaited us in the refrigerator. :) Words cannot express how happy we were to be there, we even stayed an extra night. Once we arrived home, we HIGHLY recommended the "castia" to our family members. We look forward to staying there again!

Owner's Response: Thank you! I am so glad you had a nice stay while visiting both your families. Your children seemed to enjoy the toys too, hopefully by next summer I will have a swing set up. It was very nice to meet you. Thanks again and we'll see you next time.
Sincerely,
Gloria

Comfortable and Clean

  • 4 of 5
The just-right-sized house was exactly what we were hoping for a couple nights in Silver City. The place was very clean and had all we wanted and more. We appreciated the bottle of NM wine in the fridge. The access was great, out on the edge of town. Breakfast with the birds just outside the kitchen window was a nice touch. The full kitchen wasn't needed but maybe again on a longer stay we would use for sure. Easy TV and internet - worked the first time and we were able to catch up on old episodes of our favorite TV series. The neighborhood is quiet and easy access to highway to the west. Owner friendly and welcoming. Definitely would stay there again.

Owner's Response: WOW! Thank you so much for the review I appreciate it, and thanks for being my guests. I had told my daughters for years that I wanted to be hostess and rent out the guest homes. So I really do take pride in trying to make your stay pleasant. I hope to welcome you back to Silver City again.
Sincerely,
Gloria

Cozy Casita

  • 5 of 5
The casita was a perfect two night stay from which to travel to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Gloria, the owner, was on hand to courteously welcome us, and thoughtfully had the icebox stocked with a lovely wine and some breakfast items. It was very clean and tidy, with a fully equipped kitchen. The bird watching was mesmerizing --and we aren't birders! We would definitely stay again, should we travel to Silver City.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the lovely review. I never ask my guests for a review so I am always very happy when I receive them. I hope you found the provided maps to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, Silver City and sites around here. It was nice to meet you both and hope to see you again.

Dreaming of Silver

  • 5 of 5
I spent the month of November, 2013, in this homey and stylish casita. It was just right, with enough space to cook Thanksgiving dinner and have some friends or family stay. The location was good, on the outskirts of town near walking trails. Although I often walked to town or the University, a car is useful and gets you to all the wonderful sights in the area. I loved stargazing. The night skies are spectacular around new moon. And every morning I watched the birds in the tree outside the kitchen window. It's a special place, with very accommodating hosts. Looking forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much! I try to supply enough pots and pans etc. for cooking and if anything else is needed I am next door. I hope to see you again this winter, there is plenty of sunshine here in New Mexico. Give me a call.

A Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5
Living in Tucson (3 1/2 hours away), we had been to Silver City a number of times over the years for weekend trips (particularly in the summer, when Silver City is often 15 degrees cooler), but were getting tired of staying at the same dreary motels on Rt. 180.

We looked at a couple of B & B's, but we liked the description of Gloria and Charles's "casita" (actually, a 700+ sq. ft. house---much bigger than a typical casita), so we decided to take a chance.

We're glad we did.

Not only was the casita perfect for our needs (and we were there for a full week), but Gloria and Charles were the perfect hosts. On the one or two occasions we needed something done (very minor things, by the way, like replenishing the bird feeders outside the kitchen windows, or explaining how to get the TV working), they were there in minutes, and resolved the "problem" right away.

The location was great for our purposes---a one-mile walk or drive up the hill from the historic downtown, and a third of a mile down the hill from from some great hiking trails. The casita was quiet at night---and in the daytime, too, for that matter---and fully-equipped for either a short or a lengthy stay.

We will be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you both so much for staying at the cottage. You did so much while here. I need to try some of the local things you informed me about, like Syzygy Tile tours and a kobe beef burger downtown. Cool! It was so nice visit with you. See you next time. Thanks again.

Delightful!

We had a very pleasant stay and loved the cozy apartment and the beautiful location. Watching the bird feeder from the kitchen window a big plus! And the owner was a wonderful host, very attentive, helpful and charming. Would definitely stay there again.

Owner's Response: Thank you Dr., To have a world renowned, research scientist from another country studying birds in our forest is an honor. The Gila Forest is said to have over 300 species of birds, so we enjoy attracting some for our visitors to enjoy from the kitchen window. It was a pleasure meeting you and your two college students. We hope to see you again.
Sincerely,
Gloria & Charles

Silver City is located at 6000 feet at the edge of the Gila forest. It is known for its art galleries and restaurants. A wide range of outdoor activities are available, including mountain biking, birding, spelunking in a nearby mine cavern, hiking, hunting, rock climbing, horseback riding, etc. Tennis courts are .3 miles away at the university, and the town has a golf course. The property is the last house at the edge of town and is located on a hillside with views of the city and mountains. Because of its location, it is secluded and quiet even though it is only 9/10 of a mile straight down the street to the historic downtown. The property is also the closest house to the Market St. trailhead (4/10 mi.) which leads into an extensive system of public hiking and biking trails on Boston Hill, an old mining area where the adventurous can even follow tunnels underground into the old mines. The university also has a museum featuring a fabulous collection of ancient Mimbres pottery, and the Silver City museum located in a historic home downtown has changing exhibits on the town's history, as well as a great gift shop. Several shops downtown feature antiques, and there are numerous art galleries and many fine restaurants to choose from.
