This charming 1 bedroom 1 bath cottage sits just outside the city limit, making it quiet and private, yet it is less than a mile straight down the street to the historic downtown. The house is one of three homes that sit on about two acres. It was extensively remodeled in the summer of 2012. The house is about 700 SF. It has oak hardwood floors, a completely redone bath, and a full kitchen. There are beautiful views from the property, overlooking downtown and the nearby mountains of the Gila and the Black Range. The Market street trailhead is a five minute walk up the hill, which leads to miles of open space hiking and mountain biking trails through an area of old mines, including one where the adventurous can enter an underground chamber that leads to tunnels going deep into the hillside. The house sits back from the street, with ample off street parking for any type of vehicle or RV.
The house backs up to a wooded arroyo where a family of quail lives, and deer regularly wander by and through the property. Feeders outside the kitchen window attract over twenty varieties of birds, and lifelong birders have seen birds here they had never seen before . At night the place is dark and quiet, with the Milky Way visible from the front porch.
Western New Mexico University and the county courthouse are also less than a mile away.
The home offers luxurious bedding and amenities, with many guests commenting that it is the most well-stocked home they have stayed in. For details, see below.

Gloria Harwood purchased this cottage in 1997
The owners purchased this property because of the size of the land (2 acres), its country-like setting close to downtown, and its views.
The location of the property offers the tranquility and seclusion of being in the country, yet it is less than a mile from Silver City's main attractions.
This is an ideally located cottage about an easy mile walk (or drive) to the historic center of town. This very quiet site offers great views of the area and is very close to hiking trails. It is also fabulous for bird watching with several feeders set up outside the kitchen window, which attracts many kinds of birds. A handy bird book was left on the window ledge.
The cottage is tastefully decorated, showing Gloria's artistic flair. The washer and drier are very convenient, the kitchen well-equipped and there are even rubber duckies for the bath!
Gloria and Charles are best landlords you could ever find--generous, kind and helpful. It was a real treat to stay there!
This is by far the best vacation rental we have stayed in. Too often, property managers seem to be making a minimal effort to provide an adequate rental experience. Charles and Gloria seem to delight in anticipating every need and whim of their guests. This sweet little casita lacks nothing. Plenty of nice dishes, glasses, cooking pots and utensils, lots of kitchen gadgets, and spices, oil, butter, even an onion and garlic bulb! The bed is very comfortable. The sheets and towels are high grade. They've even provided charcoal and lighter fluid for a barbeque. The bathroom is well stocked, and there is plenty of space for toilet kits. The best part for us was sitting in the kitchen and watching the birds at the feeders, which were magically refilled every day. Using the bird guide provided by Charles and Gloria, we counted 17 species of birds. Charles also told us how to get to some nice hiking trails. It's only a one mile walk into town, which took us about 20 minutes. We highly recommend this wonderful house. Also, be sure to make a reservation so you can have a fabulous meal at The Curious Kumquat.
This is a sweet little house in a great location. Everything was just as advertised. Gloria and Charles were friendly and helpful. We arrived on a cold day and the place was cozy and warm. Bottle of wine, popcorn and handwritten thank you note were particularly nice touches. Thanks for a nice stay.
We had a delightful stay in Silver City at the Market Street Cottage. It was the perfect size for us, and we loved all of the nice touches and amenities there. It was so refreshing to find some basic cooking supplies, and it was incredibly convenient to have access to a washer and dryer, complete with detergent and dryer sheets. There was even a laundry basket in the closet. We were so happy with the place that we were terribly disappointed to find it unavailable when we needed to return to Silver City a short time later. We would be happy to go back there sometime, and have already recommended it to friends who are planning a trip to Silver City.
This review comes a little late, as our stay was in the summer of 2014, but with the utmost amount of gratitude and respect for Gloria and her family. My husband and I were born and raised in Silver City and still have family that reside there that we visit. We were ecstatic when we found the "casita" (as we like to call it) and were grateful it was available for our stay. It is absolutely precious, charming and very comfortable. We travel with 2 young children and it was just right. The full size kitchen and washer and dryer were an added plus, as was the the bottle of wine that awaited us in the refrigerator. :) Words cannot express how happy we were to be there, we even stayed an extra night. Once we arrived home, we HIGHLY recommended the "castia" to our family members. We look forward to staying there again!
The just-right-sized house was exactly what we were hoping for a couple nights in Silver City. The place was very clean and had all we wanted and more. We appreciated the bottle of NM wine in the fridge. The access was great, out on the edge of town. Breakfast with the birds just outside the kitchen window was a nice touch. The full kitchen wasn't needed but maybe again on a longer stay we would use for sure. Easy TV and internet - worked the first time and we were able to catch up on old episodes of our favorite TV series. The neighborhood is quiet and easy access to highway to the west. Owner friendly and welcoming. Definitely would stay there again.
Silver City is located at 6000 feet at the edge of the Gila forest. It is known for its art galleries and restaurants. A wide range of outdoor activities are available, including mountain biking, birding, spelunking in a nearby mine cavern, hiking, hunting, rock climbing, horseback riding, etc. Tennis courts are .3 miles away at the university, and the town has a golf course. The property is the last house at the edge of town and is located on a hillside with views of the city and mountains. Because of its location, it is secluded and quiet even though it is only 9/10 of a mile straight down the street to the historic downtown. The property is also the closest house to the Market St. trailhead (4/10 mi.) which leads into an extensive system of public hiking and biking trails on Boston Hill, an old mining area where the adventurous can even follow tunnels underground into the old mines. The university also has a museum featuring a fabulous collection of ancient Mimbres pottery, and the Silver City museum located in a historic home downtown has changing exhibits on the town's history, as well as a great gift shop. Several shops downtown feature antiques, and there are numerous art galleries and many fine restaurants to choose from.
