I am the owner and head chef of a yoga and wellness retreat in Costa Rica . I love to spend time at the beach surfing, but find that a balance between the beach lifestyle and climate and that of the mountains and river is what makes me love this country so much. I like to spend time in between groups at my home relaxing, working on the property and growing fruits and vegetables. The river has a tremendous energy and cleansing properties...and has even offered up the occasional trout or two! I highly recommend diving into the ice cold swimming hole below the property and then lying out on the gigantic black hot rocks to warm through.
I designed and built my house myself and take great pride in keeping it well maintained. I enjoy a few home comforts, when I am not working down in the jungle without electricity, so I may spend the odd afternoon watching some Premiership Football on the television from the hammock.
Freshly squeezed orange juice is a must in the morning from the abundant trees all over the property. Then bake some bread and head down to the river to see if I can catch some lunch. Pick some organic salads and herbs from the garden on the way up to the house. Put the kettle on... a nice cup of tea... and I'm set!
Its the simple things in life that count... I know what I like... and I like what I know!
Angus and Tania purchased this house in 2005
As soon as I walked onto this property, I knew it was the one! As a teenager, I had studied English Literature at school and was fascinated by a poem that I read called 'Kubla Khan - a vision in a dream', written by Samuel Coleridge. Whilst under the influence of opium, Coleridge wrote the poem about a magical garden with waterfalls and a river running through it and beautiful plants and forests surrounded by a wall with towers. I always kept this magical image in my mind and hoped that one day I would find this garden. Where better place to find it than in Canaán?!
The property offers access to all the local attractions and is only a 30 minute drive from the town and 1 hr to the beach, yet is very private and secluded. In fact, you may not even want to leave the property once you arrive...just enter the drive, close the gates and enjoy the privacy of your own mountain retreat.
thank you very much for letting me stay in your house. It gave me the gift of hearing the river sing! It was a real treat and I will be back for sure. I actually stayed one more night and now on the beach, flying back tomorrow. What an awesome trip.
Delightful surroundings, quiet, restful in this wonderful location. Angus was very helpful and the local community was great.
If there were 10 stars to be given out, I would have done it. Alas, 5 stars is the best I could do.
Our stay at Angus and Tania's gorgeous mountain home was beyond compare to any other VRBO rental we've had - ever. And, don't get me wrong; we've stayed in some stellar places.
Imagine getting off a plane after 8 hours of travel and then hitting the road for a ride through the mountains to a quiet retreat - each turn of the road showered us with more beautiful vistas. We got to the house around 6 pm and, upon our request, Angus was preparing a gorgeous, delicious, fresh dinner of pasta with mushroom sauce, FRESH trout cooked in his own banana leaves over an open fire, salad, etc. What a treat that was! That was just the start of the beautiful time we had at this mountain home.
With plenty of solitude, lazy days were spent rocking on the deck overlooking the Chirripo river which roars through the property. We even found swimming holes upon which to float, drink a cold one, and generally chill. The hammock in the living room was a wonderful touch and a great way to spend an hour napping after a trip up the road to the hot springs (don't miss this attraction - you MUST have 4x4 to get up the road though).
Now, if you're someone who prefers the honking of car horns or the sound of sirens at night, forget about this place. But, if you're like us and want to see monkeys running free across the river, toucans alighting to eat seed pods, or watching storms come up through the mountains, this is your house. You will never do better and will never find warmer, more accommodating hosts.
Day trips were had every day to different areas, including a quick trip to the beach (1.5 hours). The only traffic you'll find is the occasional truck holding up traffic on the 2 lane road. You'll quickly get the hang of passing....
Don't miss the Swiss cheese lady - she's on the corner right across from the bar up the road. The swiss cheese was amazing! Ask for mozzarella too - it's even better than the swiss!
Secluded and quite, this is exactly what we were going for. The setting with the river just at your feet and the sound it makes is extremely relaxing. Great stay! A few little businesses by the villagers and a few expats makes it charming. A lady comes at your doortep to sell you eggs and poultry. You absolutely need a 4 x 4 to get there as the road is really sinuous and precarious.
Our stay at Kubla Khan (Chirripo Mountain Retreat) on the Rio Chirripo was exquisite. The remarkable home was exactly what you would hope for and exceeds expectations. The property provides a bounty of citrus fruits and papaya, throughout a terraced garden down the slope to the river. The location immerses you in rural villages offering the best Swiss cheese ever! Fishing for our dinner at the trout farm was great fun, and hiking the Cloudbridge Preserve at the end of the road was an experience of a lifetime. The locals are warm and friendly, and the home is perfect. We greatly appreciated the well-appointed kitchen! Swimming in the river was exciting, and we watched a small family of monkeys in the canopy just across the river from our hammock on the deck. The butterflies were too plentiful to count, variety of birds amazing, and changes in the weather (like clockwork each afternoon) welcome. An excellent value and tremendous opportunity. Homeowners Angus and Tania are accommodating and very enjoyable to work with. Highly recommended.
What an amazing experience! My wife and I just made an adventurous trip to Costa Rica. The experiences the country and the accommodations went far beyond our expectations. This was topped off by a host and caretaker that met our every need. If you are considering a vacation rental by owner we highly recommend Angus and his Retreat. This home is fabulous. We picked fruit in the yard, relaxed in the garden and took pictures by the amazing river. The constant roar of the rapids and waterfalls was so soothing. All this was our backyard. We travelled to other highly acclaimed sites only to discover they did not impress beyond our own Retreat.
The house and the hosts are amazing but the location is also ideal. We were close to the ocean and yet in the mountains and the rain forest. All this while being close to the city and it's amenities.
Again, we highly recommend Chirroposa Retreat and the memories it will give you without reservation. We will be back!
We could not be happier with our choice to stay at Chirripó Mountain Retreat. Angus and Tania have made it a wonderful home -- comfortably, but simply, furnished with all the basics, as well as some custom upscale touches for extra "awe factor." It is obvious the care and pride they have for the house and the land.
Upon arrival, Angus had printed information about the house and local contacts, and included several pages of "interesting things to do" along with a very clear hand-drawn map for the area. This information was very helpful -- we used it daily as we explored the valley.
We took advantage of the fresh vegetables, herbs and oranges from the gardens almost everyday, and made it down to the swimming hole several afternoons to cool off. There were many beautiful birds, moths and butterflies literally "a few meters" off the deck. And we were fortunate enough to see a group of spider monkeys in the canopy straight across the river. We met several neighbors in the nearby villages or down at the river, and everyone had very high regard for Angus and Tania.
Chirripó Mountain Retreat definitely is on our list of favorite places, and we have no doubt that we will return soon. Thank you, Angus and Tania!
The house is located in Canaan de Rivas on the Chirripó River at the base of the Chirripó Mountain and National Park.
Canaan is a picturesque mountain village made up of a small population of local coffee and dairy farmers and ex pats from worldwide.
Tourism is thriving in the area as it provides one of few entrances into the National Park and access to the summit of the Chirripó Mountain, which is the highest peak in Costa Rica at 3800 meters (12,500ft).
Canaan itself is situated at an altitude of 1200 metres (4000ft) which provides an ideal climate for growing most vegetables and supplies the perfect environment for an abundance of mountain flora and native trees, that in turn atracts a colourful array of birds and wildlife.
Amongst the many things to do and experience in the area are the botanical gardens, hot springs, swiss cheese farm, organic chocolate factory, Cloudridge Reserve and Waterfalls, horseback riding, paraglyding, hiking, birdwatching, fishing and of course relaxing by the river or at the spa.
Just a 30 minute drive from the property is the main town of San Isidro del General with a much larger population of close to 50,000, with a developed infrastructure that hosts a hospital, emergency clinic and other medical services. It has many shops and restaurants and on Thursdays holds a very popular farmers market.
Another 30 minutes out of San Isidro is the small beach town of Dominical, located on the Pacific side of the country, where you may have access to boat and fishing tours as well as surfing.
Canaan itself is a very quiet village and the enclosed property is extremely tranquil with the soothing sound of the river running below. It is the perfect environment for a relaxing vacation or a holistic retreat.
